Hello all, I just picked up a used 8 channel AD-146. Unfortunately, the previous owner had not opted to perform the factory direct-out mod. I have priced out the boards from AD (at £85 ea.). I am entirely willing to go that route, but first wanted to check to see if anyone here had personal experience taping an unbuffered, high Z output from the channel strips as they are. One thing that I am apprehensive about with the AD mod boards, is that Ill be sacrificing my line ins, which I would prefer to keep for interfacing with a Lectro venue. Anyway, I'm just putting out feelers. I havent seen a schematic yet and dont know how the internal/panel real estate looks. Th…

I built some new cables today to interface cameras with my Zaxcom hops. The Zaxcom receivers have a 5 pin analog audio output connector. I wanted a slick, one-cable solution to feed the lager cameras I've been working with. Here is my 36" Zax to Alexa cable: I used a strait 5 pin male connector because the "Panavised" Alexa cameras have focus equipment in the way preventing an up-facing right angle connector. Here is my 36" Zax to RED cable: Now for non-"Panavised" Alexa cameras, here are my 18" slick right angle Zax to Alexa cables: I used Mogami 2 pair balanced audio cable. The Mogami tends to be easier to work with in terms of fitting i…

Got tired of watching everyone use the Video Village cart as a hangout for chips, drinks and other junk which would end up landing on my Decimator 2's. Went to the Army Surplus store and now have a very portable solution which holds 2 Decimator's with Battery in one nice neat case... Waiting for a ethernet panel connector to land after which I will install my Cat 5 video feed inside also. Will use the exterior output when I need to go wireless..

This looks fun. Anyone have any suggestions on how to modify a plate for over-the-shoulder work? --Jim How To Build Your Own Plate Reverb: A Concise Step By Step Process Back by popular demand, here's a discussion of the plate reverb, as well as precise instructions on building a plate reverb unit. Oct. 11, 2011, by Bob Buontempo As Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op magazine, noted, “Plate Reverb. Many people ask me about this and I usually tell them to listen to some records from the ‘70s and ‘80s and look for reverb with a thick, pillowy sound that doesn’t obscure the vocal yet doesn’t quite sound like an actual room.” I…

Hi, I wanted to share with you this little addon to a Kortwich bag I made. The issue was, that you cannot see the display (with RF, level, eventually battery information) when the Evos are in or on the bag. Also, the bag-walls are a bit thick for the sensetive Senny beltclamps. So I took some plastic L-shape profile out of a hardwarestore, some black tape, some Tesa Velcro, and a bunch of "cold shoes" (is this the right term?). The holder is still somewhat in a beta stage, but works not bad. The caveats are: - You can't really put the Evos (and therefore antennas) upwards for better reception. However, if I have the bag on a table/cart, sitting in front, the a…

I'd like to make my own adaptor cable to interface with the intercom system on the Goodyear Blimp. I've asked them for technical details and am awaiting a reply. Just curious if anyone here has recorded dialogue on the blimp and what they used. They've told our line producer that most crews tap into the system because the motors are so loud. A search of this board revealed a discussion about helicopter intercoms but I don't know if it applys. As a back up I could use a lav in the ear cup as mentioned in that thread. I also see that Remote Audio makes adaptor cables but I don't want to buy one for this one time use. Since I'll be in Pasadena I could also rent somet…

So I have these sennheiser g2 packs lying around and decided to attempt a wireless timecode system with them. I built a lemo-1/8th cable to output from my fusion, and took the sensitivity down to -30 on the transmitter. Meters read a solid -10 or so when plugged in. The receiver is getting the signal cleanly with no hits, and when outputted to a ts-c in read mode, it will scroll if you touch the chassis of the lemo connector. If you do not touch the chassis, it will lock a static number once and not scroll. In gen mode it does nothing. The ultimate goal is to wirelessly jam a red camera, but the red won't flash its little chain symbol and it shows no indication of com…

A friend wants me to repair his cable that goes from his G2 Rx to his mixer. It's a locking TRS mini to XLR male. Does anyone know the proper wiring for this cable. Thanks, Andy

After picking up a very cheap Sennheiser SK50 transmitter and doing some research, I found it should be possible to re- tune it by replacing the PROM chip which contains the PLL prescaler values. Sennheiser will re-tune it at the factory at a price, but I've go this far (and learned quite a bit about how radio mics work in the process)- Firstly I've managed to read the PROM using an Arduino board: http://hackaday.com/...ade-rom-dumper/ and got the following values (HEX), corresponding (?) to frequencies (MHz): 48054385 724.9 48444385 724.1 40724385 721.4 48414385 719.3 48604385 718.1 400F3385 715.2 400E3385 713.6 406C3…

I'm working on a shoot where I have to record a phone conversation between 2 people. I'll be in the room with one person and the other on the phone. I've done this before with a phone hybrid, but I don't have access to one. I was just thinking about planting a lav near the speaker and just put the call on speaker and lav the person in the room with me. Any other alternatives? Thanks

If this already exists, or someone can tell me a better way to do this, I'd love to hear/see it...but in the meantime I'm wondering if I can get a little help on trying my first DIY project. I'm currently working a gig with another sound guy and comtek's are needed. He has some talent wired, I have the others, and we're each feeding different cameras. In coming up with a cheap/fast/easy way to send out a single comtek feed with all the talent being heard I've set him up with a comtek TX feeding a receiver that I have built in to my kit. The audio out from it goes into a splitter like this: http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&cat…

as i am looking for a bag based multicoupler for 4 ucr's , i am playing with the idea of disassembling a UMCWB and fitting the guts of this device in a sturdy custom housing with a footprint as small as possible. before i get out saw and driller, i wanted to ask around if someone of you planned or even successfully finished such a modification. greetings

I finally got fed up with buying little things I knew I had but couldn't find. I've certainly accumulated a lot doohickeys, thingamajigs and assorted whatchamacallits over the years, but they were scaterred throughout the house; in a drawer here, in a plastic bin over there, in a bag up on a shelf. It was time to centralize. Also, I wanted to have an area where I could build/repair/solder in my office, away from the computer/paper part of it. I came up with this desk; Looks like any other desk except for the drawers with flexible dividers. I didn't fill all the drawers, so there's room to grow. I also added a 3x diopter lamp…

Hi All, I need to make up several cables to feed one side of a Sennheiser IEM headphone output into one audio input on a RED camera for guide track use only. Obviously the IEM headphone output is unbalanced - what would be the preferred way to wire the TA3M input connector - - IEM hot to RED Pin 2, IEM cold to RED Pin 3, RED Pin 1 (ground) floating - IEM hot to RED Pin 2, IEM cold to RED Pin 3, RED Pin 1 (ground) tied to pin 3 - IEM hot to RED Pin 2, IEM cold to RED Pin 1, RED Pin 3 floating I've read several threads where people have used an IFB receiver of some sort for this. I tried a search, but searching this forum doesn't seem to be working too …

For people with custom carts and BMX tires (12 or 20inch), what are you using for brakes? Before I make a bracket to mount an actual BMX/MTB brake, is there anything else you guys have been using? My cart right now is a "PSC-style" inspired cart made from 80/20 T-slot extrusions. I have some sweet 80's BMX 20" mag wheels on it. I had to remove the front wheel brakes when a nut fell off during a film. They didn't work so well anyway. This is an old setup, but the cart/wheel configuration is about the same:

Has anybody here had any experience with nested apple boxes. I saw a set the other day where the side of the full box came off to reveal a half, quarter, and pancake inside. I have been toying with making one slightly modified so as to be able to function as a boom caddy for those times I want one. Maybe an enlarged circular hole in the half and full box on one side instead of the typical slot. Also I will probably add a bead of silicone between all the joints to deaden any creaking noise that might come up as it ages. What I am wondering is if any of you who have seen them up close can tell me is what kind of hasp is used on the removable end cap. The one I sa…

Sometimes when filming in public places, the lockup capabilities can be stretched pretty thin. PA's will hang up posters apologizing for the inconvenience and ask for bystanders to please keep quiet etc., etc. The signs and posters are still easily overlooked and people will ignore them. On a particular shoot when this was a problem, we were near a hardware store that was selling clip-on bicycle tail lights for 1.99 incl. batteries. I bought a few and clipped them to the posters and the flashing red LED's caught people's attention and they would go to read the posters and then actually keep their voices down. The lights can sometimes be pretty effective.

It has definitely been done before. But I wanted to see if I could do it for less. I sourced all my parts from markertek, lowes and the local frys. For about $30-$40 dollars it's not a bad package at the end of the day. It obviously draws a lot of ideas from the BoomBox v1. Integrating talk back from the boom op is the next step, but it achieves the goal of having one cable for the boom to wrangle. For more detailed pictures you can read my brief writeup here: http://www.danacsimmons.com/content/boom-buddy-integrated-boom-cable-system

I've never done a Snake cable that terminated in a DB25 connector but I was thinking of giving it a try. It's for an analog mixer to recorder connection on my cart. My first basic question is: I've made all of my previous snake cables (for my cart) using Canare Mini Star Quad (L-4E5C) and wrapped in flexo expandable tubing. Do I do the same here or do I use multi-pair cables like Canare L-4E3-8P or L-4E4-8AT? After that, I'll take any advice on DB25 connectors and making 8 channel snakes with them. Thanks, Josh

Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of DPA microdot connectors? And if so, would it be possible to wire them to a Sanken Cos 11? I'd like to have a little flexibility with my lav mics. I have used DPA mics, although it was a good few years ago. I seem to remember the microdot connectors being comparable to SMA connectors, i.e. just a screw in pin and screen connection. My memory could be failing me here but if that's right then how would the Sanken's three wires connect into the microdot? I've read a little about a similar connector that Rode are now using but as far as I know they don't do a 6 pin Lemo connector, which I need to fit to my …
