I finally figured an effective way to strip the tiny wires that Sanken uses on their COS-11 and CUB-1. Fire. A lit match will burn everything but the copper. With a bit of care, the fire will quickly burn about 1/2 " of wire, revealing nice, shiny copper. It only takes a split second, so be careful!

Not exactly DIY, or my idea, but the cigar caddy has worked great for safely transporting my Schoeps around. I cut the foam on the end to fit the wind screen. http://www.google.co...ved=0CH8Q8wIwAw

I just picked up a used 302 and some of the pots are a little scratchy. I opened it up and got some Stabilant 22 into the return level pots and they cleaned up nicely- now I'd like to give the rest a going over. Has anyone gone into the guts of one of these? I'm amazed at how much is packed into that case! I'm looking for any hints or tips, anything to be careful of, etc. I'm in a bit of a holding pattern since I thought I had TA3 connectors on hand to make link cables, but they were TA4. Thought I'd give the mixer a once over while I wait for parts- sure do wish Redco had a west coast office…

Born out of frustration - having a bunch of expensive gear on set and not having a quick solution to what seems like a simple request - "can i hear playback in my cans please?". I built a project box recently because of the need of playback on set from camera takes to director and video village when using my 633 and this option not being available like its big brother the 664 provides. I wanted to post this info in case it might help others in the same situation come up with a solution to fit their individual needs. I have been using it a few weeks now with complete success! will try to post pics of the actual box asap but it is nothing fancy by any means at this point. A…

I just saw a plexiglass screen protector for 664 on the SD facebook page. It just occurred to me that it might be economically feasible to have a small batch of custom screen protectors made of sapphire glass. Perhaps, if it is exactly the right size, it would stay on without any adhesive. Sapphire glass is the kind of glass they use on watches and it's super hard.. very difficult to scratch and optically superior. http://www.rayotek.com/sapphire_windows.htm I'd buy one or two in a group buy for sure.. especially if the price is right. What do you think?

Hi, Just done a repair to a Sound Devices SD302 headphone socket. Was a fairly easy job. SD supplied the part to do the fix. Part numbers are on the pics. Remove side panel and XLRs from the SD302 and you should have enough space to work. The original socket had its PCB connector glued to the receptacle on the board. This glue comes off with a sharp flat driver. simply install the new PCB connector and do the reverse of the dismantle to re-assemble. Only thing I had to do was trim the heatshrink on the new socket to make it fit better.

I've had batteries on the brain lately. Not just from a production audio point of view, but also for off-grid and house-scale solar applications. I'll be purchasing a spot welder and building various types of battery packs some time soon, and have also been thinking about setting up a decent cart power distro system for a big upcoming job, but the idea of seamless battery / power switching was giving me a bit of trouble. A simple diode arrangement is supposed to work well, but I wanted more manual control than that, while also keeping it as simple as possible. The other constraint I put on myself was to try and come up with a solution that could be scaled from…

I am fixing an old 12 channel mixer and looking for new knobs. They are for 1/4" d shaft potentiometers, but the ones I have found don't have the indicator position I need for the way the potentiometer is installed. I have also considered ones that have a set screw that would work with the d shaft, but they also have the screw oposite the indicator, and I would need it to be on the side or 90 degrees from the indicator. Any ideas as to where or how to search for these I would appreciate, Thanks, Rodrigo

I use my TRX742 right on top of the pole. The connection between just the TRX´s female XLR and the counterpart on my various mic mounts doesn´t feel very secure. There is just too much play. It even makes noise. With my Panamic pole I use some velcro on both sides. I was wondering if anyone found a clever solution to get a better grip? Sennheiser´s SKP got that very nice secure ring. Neutrik even offers that as a standalone connector - unfortunately female only. I would need a male version as I don´t want to DIY my TRX ...

I spent enough years using lead solder in my youth. And now, even with a small fume extractor, I just don't want to use lead solder anymore. Alas, the lead-free ones I've tried are a bit trickier to use. Perhaps I need to improve and/or tweak my technique. Or perhaps I'd prefer a different lead-free solder. I'm up for trying flux-core or solid if that'll help... I'm most familiar with Kester, but have no brand loyalty on this. I'm mainly making cables, soldering basic components to PCBs, and doing some fun point-to-point stuff. (So ya, cables for work. Guitar pedals and amps for fun (and I may try a couple synth modules, too) Kester 275 No-Clean Fl…

Has anyone sourced a Line Socket (to go on a cable rather than a panel) that mates with the Lemo connector used on mics wired for pro-series Sennheiser, Zaxcom, or Lectro SSM transmitters? Even Lemo's online tech support seem confused by which model matches the keyways etc. If you've found one that works, can you please share the model number? I need to make some adapters for mics wired for Senn Lemo, to plug into Lectrosonics PDRs. I can't swap or re-wire the mics. I've seen the Kortwitch solid-body adapters that Gotham sells, they work but the overall length of the plug plus adapter is a problem sticking out the top of the pack, so I'd prefer to make adapters with an in…

It seems every walkthrough of how to do this mod ends with "cut your antenna length according to the Lectro guide" or "cut to the guide which came with your antenna." These antennas are from AliExpress, which I've seen recommended here and in other SMA mod guides and they don't come with a cut guide. My antenna basics question being, since the Gx antennas have no external metal shielding (rubber coated only), does the metal of the pack effectively become the shield? Does that determine the "start point" of length of the antenna? I know there's a certain allowable tolerance for how exacting you need to be with the length of the whips for these kits, but I'm just o…

Hi Folks! So I did my own SMA antenna mod on my Sennheiser G3 receivers. And I said, ok, If they now have the sma plugs, it might be a good idea to have and external LPDA antenna to then, so this way I could have all my rx on my cart, and have then with longer range! So I bough a rf passive splitter from 1 in to 2 outputs, and 2 passive splitter with 1 in to 4 outputs, this way I could send 1 antenna signal to 8 rx. I bought a LPDA printed antenna which claims to have 18dB of gain. To compensate for rf loss on the passive splitters, I also bought a chinese RF amplifier circuit with more 20dB of gain. As I knew all this amplification this could o…

Okay. I'm stumped. A friend ask me to wire some new HMD26II sportscaster headsets to his G2 (SK100) body packs. Easy right? Mic hi (red) to 1/8" TRS tip, mic low (blue) and shield to ring and sleeve. Doesn't work. I have had the clip leads out and have tried every different combination (except the correct one apparently). No joy. What the heck am I doing wrong here? Weirdly, in this configuration, when I pull the connector out of the pack a wee bit, it works (which makes me think mic hot to ring. Clip leads? Nope. Thanks for any help on this. I have called Sennheiser tech service and they have told me the same as the book reads. These are dynamic mics so no p…

Hi all, I need to wired up a bunch of Sennheiser HSP-4 headsets for 5-pin Lectrosonics. I have done plenty of 2-wire Sennheiser lavs, but when I popped the lid on these headsets I found three wires (gasp!). Red, Blue and Copper shield. It isn't something I am familiar with. Is it just a case of wiring to figure 11? (1 = copper, 3 = blue, 5 = red)?

Sennheiser MKE2 Repair This MKE2 lavalier microphone had a broken solder joint at the capsule. If the capsule was twisted the signal would go from normal audio to pops and clicks with no audio. I decided to cut away the plastic housing. As expected, one of the solder joints had broken. I soldered the connection and the microphone worked as normal. Next I took some strong black nylon thread and wrapped the end of the black cable. I used a “snelling knot” that fishermen use to snell a hook. I wanted the nylon to bite into the cable to help the epoxy hold tightly to the cable. Then I painted on clear 5 minute epoxy, covering the nylon and the solder joi…

After picking up a very cheap Sennheiser SK50 transmitter and doing some research, I found it should be possible to re- tune it by replacing the PROM chip which contains the PLL prescaler values. Sennheiser will re-tune it at the factory at a price, but I've go this far (and learned quite a bit about how radio mics work in the process)- Firstly I've managed to read the PROM using an Arduino board: http://hackaday.com/...ade-rom-dumper/ and got the following values (HEX), corresponding (?) to frequencies (MHz): 48054385 724.9 48444385 724.1 40724385 721.4 48414385 719.3 48604385 718.1 400F3385 715.2 400E3385 713.6 406C3…

Hello I recently modded my sennheiser G4. what kind of sma antenna to cut do you suggest to use? I found zaxcom (straight version that is in kit 2 pieces to be cutted) for around 28$ kit. There is also audioroot swivel version for 30$ each one (60$ for 2). Remote audio miracle whip (straight version) 60$ for 2 antennas. The zaxcom ones seems the cheaper one. Are zaxcom good? Is the swivel version of the sma connector worth for the extra price? Thanks
