Current project we are shooting master interviews on the Red Scarlet. I'm sure the pictures are good but what an awkward thing it is. From sound POV no real big problems as I'm recording on 788. Timecode has received no complaints from post.

Alex Maragos on the Red User Group just brought up this fascinating BBC documentary on how cameras and sound gear were made smaller and more lightweight for fast-paced filmmaking in the early 1960s. I immediately said, "oh, they used Auricons back then," but the real story is a lot more complicated than I had thought. Here's the show (pending on how long it stays up on Vimeo): Watch the whole thing -- it's really something. Right around 32 minutes in, during a long segment on a John Kennedy documentary called Primary, they start talking about the myriad of issues with sound recorders and audio sync, which I found both sad and hilarious. Some things never change…

Hi all, I got a shoot with a Canon C300 coming up and had a question about the TC output of the camera. Looking in the manual, it states: "The user bit of the time code signal is output while the camcorder is recording in CAMERA mode or during playback of a clip in MEDIA mode." [79] The camera will be set to generate Free Run time code, not Rec Run, so in theory, the TC output should be outputting a constant feed of time code. However, given the above statement, I wonder if along with User Bits, time code is also not outputted unless the camera is recording? I ask because I am planning on setting up a TC Buddy TX from camera, to a TC Buddy Master in my…

I worked with the C500 the other day, and I like it even less than the C300. First, the fans are really loud! They only have two settings, ON, and AUTOMATIC. Neither of which are satisfactory for getting good sound. ON means 100% fan speed, which to my ears was about equivalent to an Epic on 50% or so. AUTOMATIC kicks the fans down to a manageable level, but on my shoot, it lasted two takes of about 45 seconds each, then the fans slowly started ramping up speed, until an overheat error came on screen and they kicked back up to full. The worst part was the fan speed kept changing until it overheated and kicked on full. I decided I'd rather give post a track with a h…

Anyone had the chance to work with one of these units yet ? I know they are pretty new but I thought of asking anyway. The classic ones are one of the quietest fans I 've worked with. Can't imagine how quiet will the new ones be ...

Words to live by: 20 Speaker (P47) • Be careful not to cover the speaker with your finger. Doing so may make sound difficult to hear. They have a similar admonition for the built-in mic. philp

Hi, I have a very strange question about the Alexa and was just wondering if anyone knew if this was possible. If I have a receiver on the Alexa, can I remotely send timecode to it that changes while the Alexa is recording? E.G. My ext TC generator is sending the Alexa free running time code at 25fps starting at 14:02:23:12, everything is running normally and then my TC Generator will send time code (Still at 25fps) starting at 00:00:12:20 I know for Audio files on the SD 552 / 664, the timecode is more like a stamp and it is based on what ever the 1st timecode frame was when the recorder starts recording but does the Arri Alexa keep a continuous record of wha…

Did some research here and found some posts on this. But if I recall, all were rather old. Hence my starting the topic up again. Need to know what solutions currently work best for sending a wireless hop to the Alexa for a scratch audio reference track. Presently, I have some older Lectro UCR100's which would seem ideal for this purpose. Can anyone tell me whether they have tried using these units with the Alexa? And what success or pitfalls they have encountered? Also, if these units will do the job, can you tell me the wiring scheme from the 3.5mm UCR100 Out to the 5-Pin XLR In? Finally, as a backup, I have Comtek PR-72b's available should that be consi…

Will be helping a friend shoot a short on a 16mm camera this summer. Don't know too much about the camera at this stage but have been told it has a pilotone output for sound sync. Vaguely recall that some Nagra's had an option to record pilotone for tape recording sync purposes but assume it's irrelevant in the digital age? So will be generating timecode and recording everything on my Zaxcom Fusion and obviously will be clapping / boarding all takes with a digi-slate along with voice ident's and supply Fusion generated sound reports. Does anyone have any other suggestions regarding keeping sound sync with a 16mm camera? Unlike my Fusion's internal clock the issue …

Hey all, Getting into timecode and worried about whether I'm totally #$@%i@ things up or not. Followed and what a few mixers have told me (and searching on JW a bit) have told me that I could jam from the recorder to the camera and that it should be fine. Without a lockit box. However, the Alexa manual is kind of brief and doesn't mention this particular activity of the timecode. What I want to know is what the blinking Alexa TC means. After I jam from the recorder it (it being the TC numbers/digits) stays solid for awhile, but then goes back to blinking again. This recent production with the Alexa also had a lockit box, and when I used it it would…

Greetings, I was working with a RED Scarlett today, the same one of which I've worked with a week ago with no problems, and had the audio return (monitor) go to very loud white noise. I lost jam sync as well, and it never returned. To begin, in the morning and prior to talent being on set, audio return from the camera was normal, and sync was green during camera set-up. Right before roll, the audio return goes to a very loud white noise. Audio levels on camera appear to bounce as they should, and playback of RED files has clean audio. The only change in the camera setup was the addition a HDMI video tap out of the back tightly squeezed next to the syn…

I/We solved the problem quite easily despite all the posts about how erratic the process could be. 'A' camera had the additional "box' with xlr inputs so that was easy, we just switched the input level from mic to line and velcro'd a Comtek to it and Bob's your uncle. B camera was just a basic body with a mic input which took an 1/8" plug at mic level only ( it doesn't switch to line). We padded the mono 1/8" to 1/8" cable by 20 db and Fanny's your aunt. What we did have trouble with was extracting the bnc to hirose cable from the lockit box to the camera. Once that bugger is in it's so hard to remove. Other than that all is going well so far, notwithstanding the unpred…

I'm prepping to do an outdoor run and gun style reality shoot, and am looking for a good solution to use my SRB recievers on their EX3 cameras. In the past I've done the fanny pack setup, but this show is going to involve a lot of running through the woods, etc and I need something sturdy that won't snag on things so easily. Suggestions? Do brackets for SR receivers exist? I appreciate your input!

No doubt this has been covered before? I couldn't seem to find anything though? What my options for TC to DSLR, in my world these have become the Pro Camera for most shoots? However re-syncing audio, or syncing multiple camera's is a pain. Im thinking of adding a Lockit Buddy http://www.lockitbuddy.com to my kit? is there any other options I should look at ?

Does anyone have experience with the timecode stability of the Sony F3? Getting ready to do a shoot with 3 and am trying not to load the camera down needlessly. Wondering if they drift when left to their own devices. Matt

Hello all, has anyone experience with the F55? We are going to shoot a TV series with 2 of those cameras for the first time. In the last few years we worked a lot with the Arri Alexa and this camera has a stable timecode generator (build by Ambient) Our workflow with the Arri is to sync them regularly (2 to 4 times a day or when there is a TC drop after a battery change) with our Aaton Cantar recorder that runs as TC-Master. The sync is done using a Denecke Syncbox. The Camera than runs in free-run synced on the incoming TC. This works very good and is really stable. I was wondering if the internal generator of the F55 is that stable. Or do we have to provide…

I know the Rebel added video, but I never worked with one. Has anyone? Anything different I should know? They are specifically asking for a mix feed to the camera, and I'll have my recorder rolling as well. I'll probably use my ERX1TCD, unless there is some reason not to. thanks!

Black magic released a camera at NAB. It's a 2.5k image and is on the cheap side at $3000'sh. But I got a chance to go by and check it out briefly. And by briefly, I mean I snaked the line to look at the audio input selection. So none of the photos have shown them but they are 2 1/4" inputs with the headphone jack just above the inputs. I snapped a pic but I'm on my phone at the moment and I'll upload it when I get a chance. I wasn't able to check the menu or look for any timecode options but maybe someone else can chime in who's looked at its specs more in detail.

Did a shoot with the Sony F3 and the audio return had a hum in it that does not show up on the recording. I know it isnt my cable because it does not happen with the return from any other camera. Has anyone else ever had this happen withe the F3? Thanks, John

I've just read through reams of posts regarding thus subject and found none that addressed my particular issue. I'd like to send a scratch track via a comtek, just for sync backup purposes. What do I need in terms of comtek receiver out/red in cable and what audio settings should I address on the Red? Thanks Mick

Ultra high resolution imaging for surveillance purposes. Fascinating technology, potentially frightening implementation. This is something that may already be in use. If the government is able to silence people like Edward Snowden, we may never know.
