http://www.arri.de/news/arri-amira-unveiled/ Arri announced a new documentary style camera. Wow! There's no specification on the audio inputs yet, but it looks like they could be TA3 connectors. Maybe that's a question for Bash to ask at the IBC? Looks nice! I've always longed for a camera to replace the XDCAMs in the ENG world. Maybe that day finally has come...

Alexa Mini TC sync 1 2 3 4 6

I'm starting a movie in a week that is shooting on the Alexa Mini. I'm going to be using my ERXs for TC sync/ scratch audio. Does anyone have experience with the TC clock on the Mini? There are a lot of Movi shots they are trying to do and wanted to know if they needed the sync box. I told them yes for now, but if the TC clock is the same as the Alexa, then it shouldn't be much of an issue.

I wanted to touch base on some of the sound-related threads going on over on the Red User group (Reduser.net), some of which have direct applications to mixers having to deal with timecode and sound inputs to the camera. Most of these discussions apply to both the Red Epic and the Red Scarlet, which are essentially the same camera, operating at different data rates (and with a $20,000 price difference). Here are some highlights: Epic Phantom Power (which does not yet work) Random Audio Level Dropouts (said to be the fault of the bypassable limiter) Low-Level Hum with Epic (caused by groundloop issues with the camera's AC adapter) Fan Noise a Probl…

Having worked with this camera for the last few months, it seems clear the camera department finds this the least objectionable of the HD systems. From my perspective, I don't run sound to it, and I had the camera house supply a pair of 1/4" to lemo jam cables so the ACs can jam the cameras from my TS3 slates, as required. The camera makes very little noise, and can roll late or cut early on multiple camera setups without making extra noise. It makes the whole thing like a film shoot for me. Only difference is the TC rate of 23.98. I love it.

I went through the menu on this camera, went to the audio section, but couldn't find any audio recording settings. Where in the heck do you change the audio sampling rate to 24 bit, 48kHz?

I have heard that it is next to impossible to get sound onto a Red Epic. What is the deal with that? Has anyone succeeded? If so, then how did you do it? I would like to attach a Lectrosonics IFB to the camera, seta level, and walk away. Is that possible ? ? Somebody suggested that I try this adapter: http://actionproducts.ch/shop/product_info.php?products_id=157 Action Products Epic Audio Adapter

Sony has introduced two new models in their Cine Alta-series of cameras, F5 and F55. F5 is a significant upgrade over F3. F55 is positioned below F65 in the product line. The audio inputs and timecode are on separate modules. IMHO, they really did their homework on this one. I think that these will sell like hot cakes. To quote: "The connections you need The camera offers vital connections, including four HD-SDI jacks, HDMI®, USB, DC IN connection, a removable XLR audio module and a removable time code/genlock module. The XLR inputs accept balanced analog signals, provide 48-Volt phantom power and will accept four channels of AES/EBU digital audio wi…

Having worked with this camera a few times now, I have to say it's pretty nice. I like the informative onboard monitor read-out. It's small and quiet, except when it's idle (no cutting early or rolling late on multiple cameras - which you can do on the Alexa). I've recorded in a small room with three of them, and didn't find it problematic. I guess the Scarlet is same thing, except lower processing power, so fewer features. No concern of ours. I haven't run into any TC issues, but the projects I've done would likely not have issue, or would not report issue to me. The Alexa continues to be a camera department favorite. The Epic seems to be the nerd favor…

Starting a project with Red Scarlet next month. Plannng to use Ambient clockit for camera. red store has adaptor cable with 3 BNCs and a (what appears to be) 4 pin Lemo. Anybody have any sources for a 5pin Lemo to 4 pin Lemo cable to connect clockit to Scarlet, or is this a custom part? don't need GPI trigger/ genclock on this project. Any experience with the Red branded cable? Chris Newton

Chater Camera, a local NorCal rental house, just posted a picture of a Pro I/O module that they received. To refresh our memory, Red says: ----- For advanced configurations, the PRO I/O MODULE attaches to the rear of your DSMC brain to provide a central hub for essential I/O connections. Professional I/O support for audio and video is critical for large productions and the PRO I/O MODULE bundles them conveniently into one compact DSMC module. Connections Include: 1x Genlock / PGM / Preview (BNC) 1x AES 2x 3-Pin XLR Input 1x 5-Pin XLR Output 1x Timecode (5-Pin Lemo) 1x GPIO (4-Pin Lemo) 1x Power (4-Pin Lemo) 1x AUX (10-Pin Lemo) 1x LCD/EVF Outp…

Granted, the death of film has been reported pretty much every year for the last decade, and I've grown accustomed to laughing it off. But somehow, this feels like the first real nail in the proverbial coffin: http://www.salon.com/2011/10/13/r_i_p_the_movie_camera_1888_2011/singleton/ Now once Kodak and Fuji stop manufacturing celluloid...

I did my first shoot on one of these today. A few things to note: 1) There's some kind of internal level setting, from 0 to 99, that seems to override the pots on the side. Presumably it's so the operator can fiddle with levels with his thumb (I didn't have time to check). You can disable it in the audio input menu, from memory it's something like "LVL + SIDE 1" and "LVL + SIDE 2". I switched it to SIDE 1 and 2 only (this disables the level control). 2) As with the F5 and F55, it forgets if the headphones are mono or stereo. So you have to go back into the menu and change it from one to the other to get it to "remember". 3) I couldn't find a timecode sock…

The Client and Producers were all a bit upset today as the monitors they were watching were so badly out of/behind sync the sound on their Comtecs that they had to stop using them. Does anyone know any way I can delay the sound only using a 744T and a 442 in a portable rig? The dialogue goes out of the 442 into a lectro IFB transmitter. Alternatively, does anyone know if there is a way to speed up the image being outputted from the Epic into two LCD monitors? Even after proving that there was no delay in the sound and that the monitors oe Epic were behind, they still didn't believe me. Lucky the Clients and Producers were close enough to hear without using…

Having just finished a few months with the lovely Alexa, I had forgotten how loud other camera systems can be. Back with the F35 with tape drives, and I am so annoyed by hearing the cameras. I am assured they are on the quietest settings, and I do hear them quiet down while rolling, but it's just so irritating. And I don't even want to start about how loud the DIT cart is. The loudest I have ever experienced. Truly shocking.

So there was an Epic thread in the Equipment category, but it seemed to wander off course... and we have this fancy Camera section! I have a few questions... How loud is the fan with the latest firmware? It's Fall here, the shoot will be in a house that has heat, but probably will be fairly cool. The story takes place in winter, and the cast will be wearing winter clothing (NE USA Winter, not LA Winter ) So the TC input really is a 4-pin Lemo... Is that something I can get made by a usual suspect? I don't think the camera department has any kind of adapter. I want to go BNC->Epic (feeding TC from an SB-3 to the camera) I was told they have, or w…

I thought since I have taken so much from this forum I should give something back. My ERX2TCD would not jam an Alexa the other day with a custom lemo/5pin xlr split cable I made. The problem turned out to be not enough voltage coming from the ERX2TCD's default timecode output voltage of .062. This was enough voltage to pass the test of jamming my 664, but not enough for the camera. Here's the fix: enter the extended menu by powering down the receiver and power up while holding the menu button, scroll though the options by pressing the menu button until you get to the "TC Output Level" menu. Use the arrows to turn it up to 0.250. Hope this helps someone. cheers, An…

Aaton is trigered (start/stop) with simple non stable button. I'd like trigger audio recorder same way but most use dedicated remotes. Any idea which recorders (portable) can be started/stopped with one button? I want keep setup simple as possible. Zoom is nice because record 10s earlier.

I was surprised to discover today on the RedUser forum that a couple of Swiss film technicians have come up with a fix for the Red Epic fan. One of them is cameraman Patrick Tresch; the other is Jacques Sax, the founder of the famed mixer/recorder company Sonosax. The unit is basically a small $800 metal brick that bolts on top of the camera, and has a "nearly silent" fan that blows into the intake port on the back of the Epic. (Yes: a fan in front of a fan.) The idea is, this very quiet fan runs 100% of the time, and prevents the bigger fan from ramping up and going into leaf-blower mode. It looks like this: I have no idea how well it works in the re…

Hey all, First for everything but I ran into a situation a few weeks ago where for the life of me could not jam the Red Epic. We tried two different sync boxes and two different cables. One of the cables was the 3 coloured BNC deal (yes we used the yellow one for timecode sync) and one was made by a reputable company that deals with Location Audio Products. Nothing. No green light on the TC . Someone else been running into this? The guy who owned the camera just shrugged and said he had just updated the software.. B

Hey Friends, First post here. Just have a quick question regarding an audio issue on the Red Weapon 8K camera. Got an email this morning from the DP saying there's weird signal noise over the scratch track on the footage. We were shooting 23.98, I jammed with a Denecke lockit and was using a Sound Device 788t recorder for the project. I had 1 UCR411a hop on the Red sending a mono-feed/scratch-track to Ch-1 and was sending mic level to the camera. Basically what it sounds like is that the Timecode signal itself was being ingested into the audio/scratch track. I'm wondering if this is an internal setting on the Red Weapon 8K, or if anyone has experie…

So I just got hired for a one day shoot next Thursday. They will be using a Red Scarlet and they want to record to the camera. In looking at the manual, it appears that the Scarlet only takes mic level 3.5mm unbalanced inputs. Is that right? Can anyone share their experiences with me in recording directly to the Scarlet? Thanks, Mike
