Today w/ 2 Alexas, firmware v7. @ Prep DIT set the cameras up to record the L input to both the right and left channels (please--stop helping me!). After being momentarily confused I got into the menus and changed the settings for the R channel to record the R input. But on both cams it only SORT OF made the change. The Right channel was hearing the R input audio, but also a lot of L channel audio as well, at a lower level. The L channels were fine. BOTH cameras did this until we rebooted them, and then they were fine--correct channel assigns without changing any settings. philp

After searching all the Alexa threads here and reading the manual I have a quick question which remains unanswered. Does the Alexa record the audio inputs when it's frame rate is increased for slow-mo shots? I seem to remember a reference to the audio being 'blocked' (not recorded) when this happens but cannot find anything about it. Thanks.

Hey all, Getting into timecode and worried about whether I'm totally #$@%i@ things up or not. Followed and what a few mixers have told me (and searching on JW a bit) have told me that I could jam from the recorder to the camera and that it should be fine. Without a lockit box. However, the Alexa manual is kind of brief and doesn't mention this particular activity of the timecode. What I want to know is what the blinking Alexa TC means. After I jam from the recorder it (it being the TC numbers/digits) stays solid for awhile, but then goes back to blinking again. This recent production with the Alexa also had a lockit box, and when I used it it would…

At my current shoot I use the Ambient wireless TC link. For days there have been drop frames so they exchanged the body but still the problem persists. Now they are suspecting the Tc causes the drop frames. When the RF connection is lost the Alexa Tc blinks. Has anyone heard something like that?

Hi All, I usually see Arri Alexa Minis on my jobs, but have a shoot coming up with three Alexa XTs. It's been years since I've seen a full-size Alexa, so can anyone confirm that they still can NOT take external Genlock from a Lockit box (unlike a Mini or Amira - which can take either Tri-Level or Genlock to TC)? This is a Concert shoot - so I'd normally recommend Genlock. thanks, nick

I worked with an Alexa Mini for the first time recently, sending two discreet channels of audio to the A-box. I had the ARRI operating manual and the audio menu seemed simple. But, I allowed the AC to read the menu while I told her what the settings should be. I was overconfident. I later heard from the editor that we recorded the two discreet channels summed together on the camera's track 1, and the same two channels summed together on track 2. My independently-recorded backup files had each mic recorded on its own track, so problem solved. But, I would still like to know what was set wrong in the camera's menu. I've never heard of such a thing before, and would…

Does anyone have a source for the connector in the US? Or premade pigtail? Arri new york and la says 4-6 weeks. Trew in Nashville said no dice on any stock of connectors or premade pigtails. Also contacted wooden camera just to see if they sold pigtails, they only sell the A box which I'm trying to avoid -Ken

I'm starting a movie in a week that is shooting on the Alexa Mini. I'm going to be using my ERXs for TC sync/ scratch audio. Does anyone have experience with the TC clock on the Mini? There are a lot of Movi shots they are trying to do and wanted to know if they needed the sync box. I told them yes for now, but if the TC clock is the same as the Alexa, then it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Hi, I have a very strange question about the Alexa and was just wondering if anyone knew if this was possible. If I have a receiver on the Alexa, can I remotely send timecode to it that changes while the Alexa is recording? E.G. My ext TC generator is sending the Alexa free running time code at 25fps starting at 14:02:23:12, everything is running normally and then my TC Generator will send time code (Still at 25fps) starting at 00:00:12:20 I know for Audio files on the SD 552 / 664, the timecode is more like a stamp and it is based on what ever the 1st timecode frame was when the recorder starts recording but does the Arri Alexa keep a continuous record of wha…

Just seen a press release from Arri, with some updates to the Alexa line... including: "Super silent XT Fan ALEXA cameras are already among the quietest digital cameras, but an even quieter fan has become available and ARRI has incorporated this new fan into the ALEXA XT models, providing an extra safety margin in very quiet or very hot environments. " Here's the press release in full: http://www.arri.com/press/press_english/press_release.html?tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=1139&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=1781&cHash=76b7993af43e4f9d6b1ba5033a07bbc8

Does anyone know if the XT has the same TC connector as the Alexa Mini. I'm looking at their connector sheet, but can't work out if it's the same. Also the 5 pin audio XLR input is the only audio input correct?, Was hoping I wouldn't need an entirely unique cable for the ERX / Alexa XT again.

I couldn't find a way to adjust volume on the headphone out of the 'standard' Alexa we're shooting right now. Is there a way to adjust....? The other thing is that I get a low level but audible hum on the headphone return. But doing a test shot there's no hum on playback. DIT station also doesn't get a hum via SDI. I still don't like it though Anybody ever experienced that....? tx, Karl

When I send AES 1,2 out on my sound devices 664 or 633 into the Arri Amira set to AES input I only get one channel of audio instead of both. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. When I do the same thing with Sony cameras both channels show up. Any help would be appreciated.

Be advised - an ERX feeding an Amira will experience intermittent link status on the ERX if the camera's Bluetooth is on. To the Bluetooth off, use the side setup menu, not the one in the eyepiece. azw

I've worked on Amirs before and haven't run into this problem. It is embedding 5 tracks of audio in every clip. I have been through every setting on the camera, and made sure to turn off channels 3 and 4 and still there are blank channels being recorded. So the merges in Da Vinci are crashing. While The BM folks have actually acknowledged that they have a merge/crash problem, we don't know if the above "5 tracks" problem is the cause. However, I'm guessing it is. They said they will get back to me...eventually...after the 5 day shoot is over I'm sure... I have confirmed the 5 track in each clip issue in multiple programs (Premiere, Da Vinci and FCP-X). It happ…

I had my first job with an Amira a few days ago and had trouble setting line level. I couldn't get the level low enough and while it was only guide track and seemed to sound fine, I switched to mic level and all looked and sounded fine. It's hard to be specific without the camera in front of me, but has anyone else had the same issue/problem? Thanks, Judy

I was on a doc with an Amira a few weeks ago and the cameraperson spent a lot of time shooting slo-mo. The camera said "Sound Disabled" and I was assuming that these were "B roll" type shots. I still boomed them but in a more "relaxed" manner, not reaching for every word, etc. We're doing the same kind of shoot tomorrow and the director informed me that they want the option of speeding slo-mo shots up to 24 fps and syching the sound to my card. I'm going into the camera via camera hop and recording on my 633. It's no problem for me to boom everything in my usual diligent manner, but is it possible for them to sync this sound and is it common practice to have the…

an Amira timecode question. Film I am on at the minute, the DIT tells me that a few takes a day are 40 seconds to a minute out of sync, whilst everything else is absolutely fine. he can see no pattern to which takes will be out of sync, and it may be take 3 and 4 that is out, and take 5 is fine. Have ruled out the cards camera is recording to as it happens across all 4 cards that they are using. I am using a 788T fed into a Zaxcom cameralink, which transmits to the ERX receiver permanently attached to camera. everything set to 24fps. and i dont believe that camera has gone off speed yet on this film. I believe that the settings on camera are correct and on the ERX. The …

I did a two day job with an Amira a little over a month ago. Suddenly, the camera owner is saying that I fried the audio board on it with my ERX-2. Is this even possible? I mean, even a short to put Timecode over there at full voltage shouldn't fry a board, right?

Doco shoot, happening in 2 adjacent rooms at the same time. Me solo on sound. I work with the A cam doing interviews, verite etc in one room, B unit is a solo shooter with a...Red Epic in the other. Ok--so in addition to recording the wirelesses from that set on my rig and a 2nd rig, we need a mic on the camera as well. Lots of emails re: ref-track hop+TC box+mic mounting on the camera. On the day: oops! The brand new RED firmware has eliminated P48 mic powering! So....Mozegear PAPI to the rescue again--plugged into the back of the mic and powered off of DTap. Be warned, folks: it's now not just the Alexa Mini that needs phantom+preamp love when the client asks fo…

So I'm doing a little 2-day shoot next week - F3 cam(s) - not too concerned because so far it seems they're fine with me just tethering to one... the last F3 shoot I did, I used hops (dual Lectro 401's), but had to use the internal rx batts as there was no LeMo DC port (what I'm used to having.) On this last shoot, the operator had 2 external monitors connected to this thing (what a cluster-f**k -- banging into walls... mounting arms coming loose at the most inopportune moments, etc. -- though some kudos to him are in order for kind of being able to operate that way) ...and my hops (because they were a bit of an afterthought) wound up being somewhat of a hinderance a…
