I am in the market for some new sound fx libraries and would love to hear from everyone what your favorite or go to libraries are. They can any type and any size, just which library you use the most and why.

Boom mixed with lav? Or just lav. From John Purcell's Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures 1 2

Hey all, I just read John Purcell's book Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures. I thought it was pretty solid. Good stuff. However, there was one thing he said that I thought was strange, only because I've heard differently elsewhere. He seemed to say to cut out all off-axis except for the primary microphone you choose. Use only "one track of room tone" at a time. This seems to indicate that you should eliminate boom mikes altogether if the signal to noise for the scene requires it. However! I've often heard you're supposed to mix them together for a more realistic representation. Also, isn't this how production mixers create their mixes? By mixing boom…

Hello, Trying to figure out the best, cleanest way to export an OMF from Premiere to Pro Tools. I'm noticing that due to how Premiere tracks handles audio files, even mono files, will end up with a Left and Right duplicate. So if you have 6 mono tracks, you'll end up with 12 tracks in the OMF (each original track duplicated with a left and right channel). This not only creates more neadless clutter in the timeline but it also increases the file size, thereby making encapsulated OMFs hit their 2gig limit much sooner. Does Pro Tools have an issue linking files from a referenced OMF vs an Encapsulated one? A potential workaround is to open the omf in Audition, delete th…

I don't do it very often, but sometimes I convert BWAV files to mp3 for transcription. I have yet to find mp3 conversion software that will carry over timecode information from BWAV files into the mp3 tags. I know from experience that recording directly to mp3 from a Sound Devices recorder will spread all kinds of useful metadata-like information into mp3 tag fields. Timecode, track names, etc... But doing this after the fact via conversion software would be handy. Now that I've gone Nomad I'm curious to see how the mp3 recording option will handle metadata. It is yet-to-be-implemented currently. Actually, I'm going to HAT! Mark

I saw the other thread, yes, but I think this is the more appropriate place to put this. There are few different ways you need to mix audio for post depending on the medium and destination you will be outputting to. For TV, you will be provided a spec sheet of what you output peaks should be maxed at. For commercials, usually it is based on a maximum LEQ, but I think that has changed of recently (haven't done post on a commercial in while.) film and theater release is a whole different animal. There is no "standard" peak level. When doing post audio for theater release the most important thing is to have a properly calibrated system. the proper cali…

Announced on the 26th. I'm pretty impress with the amount of flexibility we're getting these days. Announced that it will lower the reverb in mono or stereo /track/mixes. I've downloaded the free trial. http://www.zynaptiq.com/unveil/

So I'm wondering if someone could explain the fundamental difference between multi-mono and multi-channel plugins in Protools? From what I understand the multi-mono plugins are good for unlinking the functions within the plugin and treating each channel to different values separately. Whereas the multi-channel plugins are good for "correlated processing" (one process that relies on another in the same effects chain?). But doesn't this happen with either plugin type, by the fact that you have one plugin inserted above the next in the chain? When would this be any different? The only example I could think of is side-chaining. Is my thinking wrong about…

Hey Guys and Gals! So I'm editing this feature and I keep getting "Video Engine was unable to stop." Error. I'm able to remedy it easily by closing the session and relaunching Pro Tools but it's damned annoying to do. It seems that it happens when I click into the timeline someplace, but my hand isn't perfectly steady, so I accidentally make a micro selection of a tiny tiny region. I went up AVID's support site found a few postings where others have been fuming about this issue not being addressed back even in PT11? I didn't want to waste my "1 per month" tech support ticket with AVID on an issue that is known and not yet fixed so I wanted to…

Does anyone have a standard workflow they use when equalizing a thinner lav feed to the more robust boom? I'm assuming you probably use the spectral analysis in protools coupled with an eq. There used to be a bias app called repliQ that did an awesome job but they're outta business. It seems rather clunky to do it just by ear and I'm assuming those who have more experience know exactly what to do. Any suggestions? jgbsound

Hello, How do you export a Quicktime file with 5.1 audio from Final Cut Pro 7? You would think this would be pretty simple, do x, do y, export and walla you have a 5.1 audio file. However, I'm running into a few issues and I'm unsure how to verify if it is indeed 5.1 Here's a couple of instructions I found: http://fcproducer.com/2007/02/export-51-surround-sound-from-final-cut-pro/ https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3284332?tstart=0 I followed the first one. The first thing I noticed is that once I set my 6 tracks to dual mono, I could not hear the dialogue track anymore within Final Cut 7 program, however I can see that it is present in the waveform. I…

Remember that Blackmagic Design bought (at least part of) Fairlight last year? So now in Resolve 14, they've rolled at least some of Fairlight's audio tools into Resolve 14. Here's one picture from BMD's website: Details and more pix: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/fairlight And BMD says they will offer four mixing consoles. Here's a smaller one: A little more info (and a few more pix) on those here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve So the Resolve 14 software is in a public beta right now. There's a free version with "Revolutionary new tools for editing, color correction and professi…

What do you all recommend as a basic post-sound setup for handling simpler media projects? I primarily work as a production sound mixer, but I'd like to add sweetening and some sound design to my services when I help out student filmmakers or do web content. And I also just want to learn more about the process, and would prefer to stick with a DAW like ProTools since it seems to be such an industry standard. Bare in mind that I do not have a studio and was planning to do this work from home with my 15" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X version 10.7.4; 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5; 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory), a good set of headphones, and a zoom h4n for recording ambience and effects. …

What are some of your favorite plugins for post production, and are any free? I’m getting back into post but since my absence a lot has changed. There are obvious ones like izotope but I’d like to see what the consensus is on others.

iZotope RX3 1 2

So the new RX is out. For RX2 users, iZotope has a pretty sweet upgrade deal, from RX2 standard was around $150? for RX3 standard and $499 for RX3 Advanced. I went the advanced route this time, mostly for the deverb function. I only had a little time to play with it before leaving for a shooting trip for the rest of the week, but the two new modules, the deverb and the realtime dialogue denoiser seem like solid tools.

Story is that me and my company shot a short on RED in 23,98 mode. Based on that it will be easier to convert to NTSC and it's compatible with PAL as well. Now we're sending the film to a festival in Sweden that only accepts HDCAM and not HDCAM SR which would be preferable. And HDCAM doesn't take 23,98. So we decided to speed up to 25 fps. Enter: Problems I used the waves plugin to pull the audio up with a ratio of 1.0416, which syncs up perfectly in Pro Tools. So far so good. Now we imported the video and audio into FCP. No sync. Wtf? Okay so it turned out the audio had a TC metadata stamp which was empty. In a 25 fps project, wi…

Hi y'all! So I left the movies for radio, but still I keep using wireless mics and recording stuff outside, as if it were a movie shoot (but without the cameras). And in post, I still use the same tricks. However, I stumbled upon this little plugin called Goyo, which is a noise and reverb reducing plugin using AI in some sense. GOYO Voice Separator | De-noise, De-Reverb, De-Voice - All in One Plugin Quick review: It does what it says. I hear artifacts if I crank it hard enough. It's great to be able to just turn the BG down a tad, and then I can hardly hear the artifacts. Especially not if I'm imagining sitting in a car or listening in headphones on the subw…

Hi. I'm new here. I'm looking for feedback on an idea I'm developing. I'm working on a free, open-source app that syncs files based on LTC. If you're familiar with Tentacle Studio or Tentacle Timecode Tool, my app addresses a similar need, but is cross-platform and free. I'm in early stages of development. I am looking for feedback on how the software works in the real world, so I can focus my efforts on what works for real people. LTCsync runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. You can download a build for your OS from https://github.com/arikrupnik/ltcsync/releases/tag/0.1.1 Project home is https://github.com/arikrupnik/ltcsync

Hey guys, I'm a young guy who is just starting out in this industry and I am currently doing lots of free work. At the moment, I am doing everything from location recordings to the final mixes for short films. I have just finished the final mix for a short film with a client (i'm working for free), which they were very pleased and impressed with. This client is an older gent who is trying to launch his career as an actor through the submission of the short film I worked on into countless film festivals. He has many connections with very respectable and well known people in the industry, which is quite intimidating (but has the possibility of opening up the opportunit…

Hey does anyone know the legal issues with using iphone sounds on a feature? I have a fair amount of characters who are using iPhones in this film and I was hunting around for royalty free SFX to fill in the "text received", text sent, ring tone, picture snapshot sound, etc and was wondering about using apple's stock sounds straight from the phone? Are there legal issues with doing this? Thanks for any advice, John

I have just upgraded to the latest version of Pro Tools and I am unable to get video to play in Pro Tools. I have tried bringing in MXF, DNxHD, and MP4 (h.264) files and none will play back in Pro Tools. The videos will play normally in Quicktime, VLC etc. With the video in the edit window I can see the video keyframes in the video track and the extracted audio plays but the video window is black. Session is set to same timecode framerate as imported video which is 25 fps. I have tried disabling and reenabling the video engine, deleting and reinstalling Pro Tools to no avail. It is the latest version Pro Tools 2020.3 and my computer is a Macbook Pro 2015 i5 processor runn…

I'm one week into a three week dialogue edit on a feature and it's a very interesting view being on the other side of production (I've done foley and sound effects recording/editing in post, but this is my first real dia edit). Nothing quite exposes every minute error in production like dialogue editing. I'm sure most of the more experienced sound mixers already are aware of these things, but it might be an interesting eye opener for newcomers into the production sound world to sit in on a dialogue edit.

How often do you (the location sound recordist) find that production asks you about sound design/mix? 1 2 3

I always enjoy doing sound design and mix for a movie that either I, or a friend of mine, has done the location sound for-- I know how things were recorded, what bumps to expect, where to look for good wild sound/tone, etc. However, unless the project is a narrative and I have a relatively close relationship with the director, I usually find that the post goes elsewhere for one reason or another. Any advice?
