Hey Everyone, So I've been reading a lot of books of late about all the "below the line" operations, including Both editions of Purcell's dialog editing books (the 2nd edition is quite insightful about more specialized tasks like BNR, ADR, and treating dialog to give it that extra pop), Rich Tozzoli's Protools Surround Mixing, Holman's Surround Sound But final layback is still a black box mystery to me so I'd like to read more about the techniques they utilize. Can anyone recommend a good practical guide to rerecord mixing? Thanks!

A good value? I know Pro Tools is the defacto standard but I'm not looking to do this on a competitive level. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/audiomastersuite?keycode=64873

i need a hand with this. i'm cutting a tv series at the moment and all i want is to replace all the edited clips of a certain recording in my timeline with an eq'd version of the same clip. specifically a sound in my ambiance tracks. i want the sames parts of the original clip to be replaced with the same parts of the replacement clip. this is essential. no matter what combination i choose from the "replace clip dialog options" box, it will not do this for me. it only effects the highlighted clip and never replaces all the clips in the session, and never chooses the same edit points as my original clip. can i have a chat with someone here, preferably on the phone, to w…

So I've been working on a feature that had been print locked for a while now, and they decided to cut one entire scene (let's call this SceneA) and then, move another scene (SceneB from a different location to plug the hole where Scene A was. I asked for the In/out points on the timeline and the order (sequence) in which they made these moves. I'm assuming the timeline (frames) will shift when they delete Scene A, and again, when they Cut and move Scene B, so the exact IO points will be necessary in order to replicate what they did. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Ideally I'd like PT10 to behave more like a non-linear editor -- in mar…

My friend: "I'm having a lot of fun. They have a massive 64 channel ProTools HD system that has been newly installed, and it still has yet to be booted up after being available for 3 weeks. Nice!" Me: "Have fun with the new ProTools desk-- I hear it's perfect for putting a USBPre2 and laptop on top of" My friend: "That's pretty much how i've been using it! ; )"

How often do you (the location sound recordist) find that production asks you about sound design/mix? 1 2 3

I always enjoy doing sound design and mix for a movie that either I, or a friend of mine, has done the location sound for-- I know how things were recorded, what bumps to expect, where to look for good wild sound/tone, etc. However, unless the project is a narrative and I have a relatively close relationship with the director, I usually find that the post goes elsewhere for one reason or another. Any advice?

Hey all. So I was planning on editing the video that was shot at the Atlanta Sound Mixers gathering into stuff that people could see. I got the drives today. The footage was shot on a Sony XDCam (by Chris Mills...correct me if I'm wrong, Chris). I do all my editing in Final Cut X. I can't even play the video back in Quicktime, and when I import the video into Final Cut, nothing plays. Does anyone know of a quick and free way to convert this video? I don't have a lot of time to mess around with this. I was planning on just importing the video and chopping up each presentation as it's own file, throw an little intro/outro title, and export. Right now I'm …

I've been Recording with nomad for well over a year. I'm hearing from post that the file names that I have been entering methodically do not show up on the file itself when imported. I know they show up in the report, have I been wrong to have thought that this data is displayed on the track itself? All that shows up is: S1,S2,S3 etc...im assuming that means "source". I'm delivering polywave, the individual track names are the same as the main polywave file, in most cases the date, plus the "S1". Will the track names appear if I deliver mono?

(errr.... new aatranslator version is out!) My favorite quote from an AATranslator user is this one (it's for you, Henchman): "So as a mixer you are going to receive a .PTF. It is a deep feeling of loneliness, but AAtranslator comes and gives you a big hug saying 'here is your .RPP, kid'."

In Audition CS6, is there a way to nudge/transport by a single frame? I dived into the menus/keyboard shortcuts but couldn't find a way to do it.

A few months ago, a client called up with a rush change. Could I tweak the music levels in a show of his, in a hurry, like as soon as I get a break in the film I'm mixing for someone else? And get him a file in less than an hour from now? On the bad side, this guy refuses to accept pickups even when I guarantee the levels will match... I have to send him the whole 20 minute act, just because of a fifteen-second change. On the good side, I use a DAW that renders complex mixes faster than real-time. Like an idiot, I told him I'd do it... but there wouldn't be time for me to QC the result: I'd mix, render while I gulped lunch, send it to another machine, and upload f…

Sound Ideas has the 120-disc Network library on sale this month for less than $500. If you're running sfx from CD and just starting to build a library, it's a great deal. Yeah, some of the cuts are a little tired... but at $4/disc who can complain? (You can also get it if you're running sfx from SoundMiner or similar. But shoving 120 discs into Ripper could eat a whole weekend...)

Does anyone know of a piece of software or plug in that allows you to edit audio using a spectral view rather than a waveform view?

On my current show I deliver files with meta data recorded on a Nomad. I talked to the assistant editor today and though he can read the meta data file (c2v), the audio regions in the Media Composer 6 timeline don't display the track names (as they do in the edit window in Pro Tools). Is there a way to make Avid Media Composer display the track names of my poly files?

So I have a feature that has a fair bit of outdoor shots that were filmed on location at a catholic school on E Colorado with traffic driving by. They won't ADR so I'm going to try and do a little multiband expansion to tame that noisy beast. i also have run rx2 on a few of the noisiest sections to try to at least get the noise floor to match a little betters making other fades between cuts a little more seamless. Now I've never really used waves c4 so I'd appreciate some general tips you guys have for me. Tell me how you like to use this tool?

Hey, This is a repost of a topic from the General Discussion section of the site. I was wanting a take on this from a post engineer's perspective. I have been on more than one shoot for a commercial recently where a particular AD in town has refused to get room tone at the end of the shoot day saying it is because, "Everyone would kill her if we stop for that at the end of the day." This after I asked for it earlier in the day. Admittedly, this translates to either, "I want to go home and don't care," or "I have absolutely no control of my set". But, this brings up the topic, how often do you get room tone from set? Do you ever get it on 30 second comme…

Has anyone heard of this software from Adobe? The demos sound too good to be true. I'm with Rainn Wilson, "I don't believe it." Mark O.

End of an era maybe... "Scott Morris, the head of Adobe’s Creative cloud and creative suite team told me last week, this will be the only way to get access to its tools. The company will continue to sell CS6 for the time being, but it’s not clear for how long." http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/06/adobe-goes-all-in-with-subscription-based-creative-cloud-will-stop-selling-regular-cs-licenses-shrink-wrapped-boxes/

Anyone know a good poly wav splitter that works on large files (over 4G)? I usually just use Sound Device's WaveAgent to split poly files, but I just kicked out a 5.1 mix for a feature in a poly wave file and it comes in at about 5G. Wave Agent is not recognizing this and I presume it's because of some 4G file size limit. (I think the file itself is O.K. I can open it up and listen in Reaper. And Wave Agent is still O.K. because it's splitting my smaller 5.1 trailers and stereo mix files just fine.) I can go back into my DAW and set it up to output each channel mono and re-render, but I would love to find something as handy as Wave Agent to just split the file I'v…

So when I do post audio I usually find that what chair I sit in is usually more important than probably what program I'm using. If I don't feel comfortable and in the right posture then I find that I'm getting up more and taking more breaks and can barely hop back in the seat. I'm 6'7 so for me I'd probably need an orthotics and chiropractor examine my work space to fit it for me...luckily I don't do as much post these days. One of my first jobs I was in the saddle for several hours every day and realized that the padded fold out chair I'd been sitting on was actually brusing my lower ribs. It was such a weird feeling I thought I had kidney failure or something, but low a…

Hello there, I currently work a full time job creating 5 M&E tracks a week. (1 a day) for a Soap Opera. I am assuming that what i earn is not much and i rather not say. Yet i do wonder how much everyone else earns because when I leave i want to let them know an estimate of what others earn in this side of post. Ambient, Footsteps, hard effects, foley, etc and final mix are all elements that take time and effort. I will say that my starting hourly rate is the the highest they stop paying the person before me after 3 years of being employed. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I was looking for something like this in a recent thread but wasn't successful. Now this might be interesting in the quest to play surround content to users with stereo headphones. Has it's limitations (software needs to be embedded on the consumer's system) but sounds interesting. http://www.dts.com/professionals/sound-technologies/headphonex.aspx DTS Headphone:X™ DTS Headphone:X is a Home Theater in your Pocket (HTiP) solution for mobile audio that faithfully reproduces the home theater surround sound experience using a wide variety of simple headphones. It simulates the three-dimensional multichannel audio environment of a movie's original mixing stage, cali…
