Hey all, I'm about to start work on an animation of a firefly and am trying to recreate a real flappy, fantasy, fairy like wing sound. Something similar to this at 12seconds. http://www.bonson.ca/product/wings/ I have tried flapping pieces of paper of different sizes and speeding it up which seems to work but I can't quite get that proper flap out of it... more of the papery click.. Wondering if any of you had some advice/ideas as to how I could make this work.

Hey all. So I was planning on editing the video that was shot at the Atlanta Sound Mixers gathering into stuff that people could see. I got the drives today. The footage was shot on a Sony XDCam (by Chris Mills...correct me if I'm wrong, Chris). I do all my editing in Final Cut X. I can't even play the video back in Quicktime, and when I import the video into Final Cut, nothing plays. Does anyone know of a quick and free way to convert this video? I don't have a lot of time to mess around with this. I was planning on just importing the video and chopping up each presentation as it's own file, throw an little intro/outro title, and export. Right now I'm …

Doing post on a film and wanted to see if anyone has an forest/wood ambiences from upstate New York they would be willing to share? Can be day or night. I have many generic ambiences that will work fine, but thought it would be fun to use some specific to the area. Thanks!

Do you guys have any favorite Altiverb tweaks you do in the dialog mix? I've been working on this feature and use it quite a big to help get the dialog cuts to blend better as well as giving it a better, more cinematic feel within the room. But I always wonder if there's something I could be doing to help make it even better so I thought I'd ask people smarter than me! Thanks for any advice you can share! John

Local 695 held a seminar at Kingsoundworks in March, 2015. "Bridging the Gap from Production Audio to Post" discusses many of the topics we have been discussing here regarding metadata and also the issue of whether we need a mix or not. Local 695 has graciously made this video available to JWSOUND members. Watch on YouTube also

[if you think that I should post this in a different section, please let me know] This question is more for people who are on-set only type folk... How often do you find that production comes to you asking either for you personally to do the sound design and mix or for a recommendation from you for good people to go to? If you are working on a union gig, does that mean that the post has to be union as well? I do post audio at an independent sound house in NYC, and am trying to elevate the quality of movies that I am working on. I know that many of the folks on this forum are working on very interesting/quality content, but I had always assumed that the…

Just over 30-seconds long. Dialogue Contour seems to be the thing. I guess IBC/AES-ish release? And there's at least one book coming. Complete with an Encyclopedia of Noise :-) https://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.action?itemid=269473&lid=3&keywords=iZotope&subsiteid=1&

Has anyone heard of this software from Adobe? The demos sound too good to be true. I'm with Rainn Wilson, "I don't believe it." Mark O.

Story is that me and my company shot a short on RED in 23,98 mode. Based on that it will be easier to convert to NTSC and it's compatible with PAL as well. Now we're sending the film to a festival in Sweden that only accepts HDCAM and not HDCAM SR which would be preferable. And HDCAM doesn't take 23,98. So we decided to speed up to 25 fps. Enter: Problems I used the waves plugin to pull the audio up with a ratio of 1.0416, which syncs up perfectly in Pro Tools. So far so good. Now we imported the video and audio into FCP. No sync. Wtf? Okay so it turned out the audio had a TC metadata stamp which was empty. In a 25 fps project, wi…

"Anybody is a professional audio editor using this system." --OK, that's a bit over the top. And this idea still has a way to go before we'll see it in a product. But kinda interesting mashup of a few ideas:

(errr.... new aatranslator version is out!) My favorite quote from an AATranslator user is this one (it's for you, Henchman): "So as a mixer you are going to receive a .PTF. It is a deep feeling of loneliness, but AAtranslator comes and gives you a big hug saying 'here is your .RPP, kid'."

So as it goes, every so often I hit roll with the wrong metadata. It's an easy fix. But, post wants the files named by scene/take rather than segments. Wave Agent does this as a batch process. But Wav Agent doesn't recognize any files with renamed metadata. So now all if a sudden I look like a fool on the dailies notes which say that I mis-named the files. The Deva sound report CSV file has everything correct, it's just the metadata. Is this a Deva fail? Does the Deva not actually change the metadata? Any ideas? Help! Dan Izen

Hey Everyone, So I've been reading a lot of books of late about all the "below the line" operations, including Both editions of Purcell's dialog editing books (the 2nd edition is quite insightful about more specialized tasks like BNR, ADR, and treating dialog to give it that extra pop), Rich Tozzoli's Protools Surround Mixing, Holman's Surround Sound But final layback is still a black box mystery to me so I'd like to read more about the techniques they utilize. Can anyone recommend a good practical guide to rerecord mixing? Thanks!

I'd like to know when circumstance allows the microphone to be in frame. When it's acceptable, when it's not. I've heard of productions sometimes not only allowing the microphone, but even the boom operators body to be in the frame. I just did a commercial with an all white background that had c-stands with tape and markers on the walls for SFX. The mixer was told not to get the mic into the frame. This could've been for a good reason or because the director and others didn't understand how it's used/worked with. What I know now is that the microphone, or any object that will be taken out in post cannot pass through an actor or object on camera. Correct me if i'm wro…

Sorry if this is common sense, or something often talked about that I'm not searching for correctly, but I figured I'd just take a stab and see if I can get some opinions... I typically do a lot of post work for the short films that my company produces - just comes with the territory. In the past, not having a timecode recorder I would create new master video files after each shoot, creating files with the 2nd system audio built in with the video track - time consuming but it worked. Fast forward to now - I have a 664 and we shot on a Weapon and everything was in TC heaven... so now what?? I've been told the whole point is so that editors can take the came…

Hello, I was wondering what is the traditional workflow for editing audio (cleanup, amplify, etc..), the process used as well as the best order: Would you Normalize first, then noise reduction, then EQ, then amplify? I just don't know what the best procedure is. Also if you have a track where the dialogue audio levels vary wildly, some quiet, some loud, what is the best process or processes to use that will result in a consistent audio level? Thansk

My friend: "I'm having a lot of fun. They have a massive 64 channel ProTools HD system that has been newly installed, and it still has yet to be booted up after being available for 3 weeks. Nice!" Me: "Have fun with the new ProTools desk-- I hear it's perfect for putting a USBPre2 and laptop on top of" My friend: "That's pretty much how i've been using it! ; )"

I can't help but scratch my head on this one... I'm occassionally doing post for Indie/student shorts which go on DVD (no theatrical), and upon reading up a bit I hopefully understand correct now that the Dial track should be around -27db Leq (A), and if then I set Dialnorm to -27dB FS when encoding AC3, all should be (almost) good? A few months ago I calibrated my monitors and now I'm doing post on another short, where I occasionally switch from 76dB (editing) to 83dB (mixing), which I figured should bring me in the ballpark without slavishly watching each meter movement... but please correct me if I'm wrong. Now, when doing stuff for small TV stations, which s…

Hey Guys, I feel like I might be missing something key in my workflow here, so just wondering if anyone could help signpost me in the right direction... How do I ensure the mixed audio masters I create, are 100% synced when the video team import it back into their video software? Do you guys add a tone or something at the start? Apologies if this is a silly question, I'd like everything to be synced exactly for them. Thanks

Hi all, So, I'm editing VO for some instruction industrials for the web. I'm using PT10 native to fix the dialog (removing ums, repeats, lip smacks, and such, but it's too cumbersome to actually bounce to disk for each of these regions (being that native does it in realtime only). So I've been consolidating the region, and the resulting file that shows up in the project's audio files folder is what I wind up importing into my video NLE. Does anyone know: is the quality lower on consolidated regions or the same as when you bounce? I don't think it necessarily matters for this application but it got me wondering about my feature film mixes and consoli…

Hello everybody, Part of my job is doing post mixing for documentaries. I've already own the Waves X bundles, Z noize and Isotope RX advanced. I now mainly use Isotope RX and from time to the waves X bundles. I wanted to know if any of you have tried or use the waves noise suppressor (WNS) and if you think that it would be a good addition to my restoration plugins? by the way I am not a big fan of Z noise so I am looking for something more in the Izotope denoise side. Any suggestions are welcome.
