I was in my school studio recording a voiceover and two things are very concerning. The studio uses pro tools 11 hd. I set up a mic 416t with a converter to phantom power. First problem I encountered was that I had to boost the gain either all the way up or close to the limit in order to achieve levels that were close to -12db which caused plenty of hiss in the recording. Second problem was that on one of the recordings it sounded as if I clipped but the on the meters and even playback it didn't ever show that I clipped or that the levels got above -6db. When I went into another editing system i checked the recording and it showed I clipped. Any ideas why this would have …

Although I am not a fan of more categorization or more sections, I have sort of warmed up to the idea of having an area that is tailored for post-production. I AM a big fan of production people and post people working to minimize the fragmentation and mis-information that comes from keeping these two disciplines apart. Open communication is vital, not only for important pre-production specifications coming from post-supervisors (often the ONLY communication lots of Production Sound people ever have!), but more importantly for the intrinsic value of a complete understanding of the whole process. The hope is that this new section will encourage MORE communication rather tha…

There is a scene in Batman V Superman at Lois Lane's apartment bathroom. Noticed underneath dialogue there was taxi car horn noise. Was just checking to see if there was a discussion on that decision. Whoever made that choice really set the scene really well. You didn't have to say it was Metropolis, it sounded just like New York. Was there any back and forth about laying more noise under dialogue? Or was that one of many honks from on location where more noise needed to be added to match unavoidable set issues?

Actually getting drunk is not needed to perform this task but wanted to show that even someone after a couple of drinks couldn't mess it up.

Sound Ideas has the 120-disc Network library on sale this month for less than $500. If you're running sfx from CD and just starting to build a library, it's a great deal. Yeah, some of the cuts are a little tired... but at $4/disc who can complain? (You can also get it if you're running sfx from SoundMiner or similar. But shoving 120 discs into Ripper could eat a whole weekend...)

i need a hand with this. i'm cutting a tv series at the moment and all i want is to replace all the edited clips of a certain recording in my timeline with an eq'd version of the same clip. specifically a sound in my ambiance tracks. i want the sames parts of the original clip to be replaced with the same parts of the replacement clip. this is essential. no matter what combination i choose from the "replace clip dialog options" box, it will not do this for me. it only effects the highlighted clip and never replaces all the clips in the session, and never chooses the same edit points as my original clip. can i have a chat with someone here, preferably on the phone, to w…

I am getting a whine in my monitor speakers that seems to be related to my video card use. It persists even if screen monitor is turned off. Got worse with new Dell 30inch. Pulled USB cords to make sure it wasn't bleeding there. Also plugged in external USB Sound board and with no change. It will stop momentarily when I change window layout and then return. Also will pitch change when mouse is used. Thoughts??? I am getting grumpy!!

HELP!! Got a call from the Post house handling editorial from a movie I just wrapped. The called to say my audio was useless and that all the waveforms are clipped or squared off in Media Composer. I brought them in to Protools and saw no issues. In this scene, my normal dialog sits between -20 and -10 with a character smacking a table peaking at -4 In protools I know how to change the height of the waveform inside the track. I don't need to change the height of the track, just the vertical display of the waveform inside the track. When you scale it down in protools you can see my levels are good with no clipping.. Need to nip this in the bud...

Is it possible to batch autosync sound and video using timecode in Premier Pro CS6? I know this can be done in Avid and FCP. There seem to be a merge clip with timecode function in Premier Pro, but this only lets you sync one at a time. What I would like to know is of there is a way to batch sync the files. Sammy Huen

Is there post tech available that allows word and phrase searching in audio files? My initial thought is the time consuming method of real time siri transcription etc. no transcripts done of this audio unfortunately.

Slight rant... 29.97 is not what most people think it is. The original definition ties it to the color oscillator frequency, and the math comes down to 30 fps * (1000/1001). The actual calculation being 5×7×9/(8×11) MHz * 2 / 455 / 525 For word clock, we often talk about "0.1% pull down", so many engineers and software writers probably assume that 29.97 is 0.1% pull down from 30fps, which is 30 fps * (999*1000) Yes, that means there is a difference. It's almost exactly 1ppm, good enough for Hollywood? For Time Of Day Timestamping, a recording made in the afternoon or evening could be off by 2 or 3 frames just by the assumptions made here. D…

So I've SPL'd the monitors in my room but now, I would like to calibrate the frequency response of my speakers in my studio. I'm using the Yamaha SM series monitors in a 5.1 setup and was wondering how you guys tweak highs/mids/lows so it's tuned appropriately for your work area? I'm assuming you need a spectrum analyzer, a decent mic, a tone generator and a need for a more honest representation of what your mix will sound like. Is it as simple as sending out tone from the tone generator in Protools, looking at it on the spectrum analyzer as you shift frequencies and tweak the low/mid/high switches on the speakers? Or is there some other special way to tune it? …

A few months ago, a client called up with a rush change. Could I tweak the music levels in a show of his, in a hurry, like as soon as I get a break in the film I'm mixing for someone else? And get him a file in less than an hour from now? On the bad side, this guy refuses to accept pickups even when I guarantee the levels will match... I have to send him the whole 20 minute act, just because of a fifteen-second change. On the good side, I use a DAW that renders complex mixes faster than real-time. Like an idiot, I told him I'd do it... but there wouldn't be time for me to QC the result: I'd mix, render while I gulped lunch, send it to another machine, and upload f…

Is this something that's possible that I am too dumb to figure out on my own? I have maybe 5 different noise profiles to filter out, and at the moment I have to run individual instances of the plugin and automate the global bypass in order to do so and keep my CPU happy. I know I could destructive edit a copy of the selected audio, but it seems to me what I'm proposing wouldn't be that difficult to implement. Anyone else have thoughts on the matter? Please share.

Hello all, Just had a quick spotting session for an upcoming 5.1 mix. Our editor was using an ipad app he invented to jot down quick notes on the fly, all being synced through wifi to the TC of the Pro Tools session [LE 10]. It was very helpful to get an e mail the next day containing close to frame accurate notes to make changes before the final mixing. http://www.digitalrebellion.com/cutnotes/ Just wondering if that would be helpful to anyone else out there. I was impressed.

M1 mac users who work with video should not update to Protools 2021.6. It will make the video completely unusable, so it's better to continue using 2021.3. I hope Avid will release a version that is fully compatible with M1 soon.

Hello everyone, I have a very short audio clip from my wedding that sounds like garbage. It was recorded back in 2005 on a non HD camera with who knows what kind of mic. I'm putting a video together for my wife's bday tomorrow and was hoping someone can help me fix the audio. The audio is from the onboard mic that the video guy recorded. It's at my reception so the DJ's announcement was too loud for his cheapo mic to handle, so the audio clips. Is this something that can be salvaged? The audio clip is 20 seconds long. Any help is appreciated.

I will post this in a more appropriate forum but was curious if someone here might have come across this. Been working with OMF's and pro tools quite a long time but first time running into this error shown below. same client I have worked with before never any issues. I have them sending me an OMF separated vs encapsulated because it is over a 2gb OMF and I read somewhere the size larger than 2gb encapsulated might trigger this error? But other posts on this topic didnt seam to generate solutions, other than size. I went thru all my recent omf's and all show up in pro tools as Version type 2.0. I have at least 1x OMF that is 2.16gb and it opened fine opening as file type…
