In the context where I work, the video editors send us a finished episode to work with. Then, the audio team will do the backgrounds, foley, dialogs, music, etc, and when the final mix is done, the episode is sent for review to the director, producers, and a group of people who will ask for changes in audio, and video. After the editor receives those requests, he will do all the video adjustments and send us back a new video and an .omf with a reference track to cut and assemble the Pro Tools session according to this new version. Now, here comes the problem: The changes made by the editor include opening space for new scenes and shots that were not in the pre…

My question is about using plugins, I do mostly sound on a film set, and rarely I do some post-work for small projects, this helped me a lot to improve my job during the shootings. I've realized how easy it could be making a mess when cleaning up dialogues and mixing (mostly doing it at the same time). I have mixed in the past mostly music and carried with me that background. High levels, transients massive, using compressors, never issues about noises and need to clean rumbles, clothes rustle because everything was recorded in perfect situations. But when I approached audio film post everything was more complicated. I used plug ins on the single tracks and on the stem…

I dont know how many of you have experienced this, but I have a feeling it is becoming more and more frequent as productions hire people with less experience to save on cash, since budgets are just numbers pulled out of a hat (in the indie world) and rates are set by producers.... anyway, heres the rant: I dont usually do post because on an indie level, production is basically just asking for favors by the time principal photography is done. But every now and then I will do--work on a project if I have time, approve the production audio (I will not do salvage jobs), and like the project enough. The last film I did post on, the guys really knew their stuff, and even ad…

I've been lucky to be starting audio post on my first feature (very low budget), which is just over 80mins. It is a drama between three main characters, but there's a few more. I'm already over a month into it and I've already been delayed significantly by ADR editing, although that is part of the process. Just looking for some perspective on how much time to give a project, when the Director/Producer's one "sound designer" (me) is likened to a whole audio-post department. Tell me if this is not unusual? Firstly I know there are many variables that will be affecting the size of sound post teams. Budget and work load are the main ones. In this case, it is …

when mixing what are the audio levels of delivering, - 23 LUFS (Dolby scale 7) is for dialogue? or for the whole mix included effects and music? and or what are the levels normally adopted for feature film and or short movies, indies and docu, for dialogues, music and effects?

So I have a project coming up in a few months (probably more like 6), that will require at least a 5.1 surround mix. I have Protools 10 native with the Complete Production Toolkit unlocked. I want to be able to encode the data stream for a blu ray and for a DVD as well. I see a bunch of encoders such as DTS encoder, Neyrinck Soundcode for DTS, Neyrinck Soundcode for Dolby E, etc. Bear in mind I know very little about the plugin I need to select (I have only done limited surround mixing in my past. Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

Avid has a new CEO as of yesterday. Earnings announcement later this month. "Could Hernandez’ appointment, made by the company’s Board of Directors, spur a turnaround at Avid, manufacturer of the industry standard DAW (by a landslide) and the crucial core of many, many music studios, film and TV audio post suites, and live venues? Well maybe – but seeing how Avid is steadily sinking, there may not be a whole lot Hernandez can really do." http://www.sonicscoop.com/2013/02/11/avid-switches-ceos-will-louis-hernandez-turn-it-around/

I was having dinner with a european producer last night and he was talking about a 2-mic proximity ADR technique? I have never heard of such a thing. Been looping dialogue for years, and sometimes of course the actor may distance himself from the mic for a proximity effect, but 2 spaced mics on a sound stage for a single actor? Can anyone give me some details on this, or was this guy talking through his hat? thx Commpost

M1 mac users who work with video should not update to Protools 2021.6. It will make the video completely unusable, so it's better to continue using 2021.3. I hope Avid will release a version that is fully compatible with M1 soon.

I was posting just prior about importing from a AAF/OMF and the files were read-only so I fixed that issue (or I should say, you all helped me resolve that problem). Now I just realized that (after editing for awhile), the sync is drifting. What's bizarre about it is if I look at the video reference in Quicktime, within the inspector window, it says the frame rate is 23.98, playback also 23.98 So, I import it into protools, but protools claims it's true 24. The mixed down reference audio matches the video and stays in sync. However, when I import the AAF/OMF file, it claims it's 23.98, and all those tracks are fall out of sync. has anyone experi…

Hey does anyone else have an AVID S3 controller board? The 16th fader just malfunctioned and just pegs the fader at +12 (you actually hear a thunk when it does it). Has anyone else experienced this? What's so annoying is that the board is less than 2 years old. I tried resetting EuControl but to no avail. I also powered off the machine and rebooted my system thinking that perhaps the driver was being wonky. After a bit, you can hear the motor in the fader buzz just a bit, then the fader pegs back up to +12 again Thanks!

Video editor looking to do a passable cleanup on an audio track only for the purpose of handing in a rough. They gave me horrible audio, with noise and the mic was probably laying on the ground in a corner, def not where it was supposed to be. I'll launch Protools and see if I can give myself a refresher. Bad audio is bad audio, but I wanted to see if anyone can recommend a plug-in or two that I should focus my time on as I dig around in there to try to give it a little bump. Not looking to take up too much of anyone's time, would appreciate any recommendations on a plug-in I should try. Please be polite. I don't have time to search the boards here to try t…

I don't want to divert the discussion in the other speaker thread, so... My son is heading off to college in the fall and he plans on majoring in music (probably a mix of jazz performance and some sort of composing). He'll be living in a dorm with limited personal space... we're looking for some decent speakers/monitors for recreational listening and perhaps working through some of his homework. He'll probably rely on headphones for careful listening (no problem; there are plenty of those around here). But we're not sure what to look at or buy for speakers. NFMs I have down...cheaper and smaller speakers, I'm not so sure... We'd like something powered, compact (not much…

Hi Everyone, I am a Sound Editor at a post sound studio in Hollywood, and we are in the process of building a new space. I was put in charge of designing our foley pits, and I don't really have any experience with the design and construction of them. This is a legitimate foley stage, so please don't give me ideas for portable pits. We are going to have one small pit in our ADR room, and then a larger pit for our theater. I have a few questions about the construction of these foley pits for anyone who might know. 1) How deep do the pits need to be? 2) For surfaces like tile, wood, and carpet, do I need dig out the space and pour concrete to put the tile and carpet on…

End of an era maybe... "Scott Morris, the head of Adobe’s Creative cloud and creative suite team told me last week, this will be the only way to get access to its tools. The company will continue to sell CS6 for the time being, but it’s not clear for how long." http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/06/adobe-goes-all-in-with-subscription-based-creative-cloud-will-stop-selling-regular-cs-licenses-shrink-wrapped-boxes/

So when I do post audio I usually find that what chair I sit in is usually more important than probably what program I'm using. If I don't feel comfortable and in the right posture then I find that I'm getting up more and taking more breaks and can barely hop back in the seat. I'm 6'7 so for me I'd probably need an orthotics and chiropractor examine my work space to fit it for me...luckily I don't do as much post these days. One of my first jobs I was in the saddle for several hours every day and realized that the padded fold out chair I'd been sitting on was actually brusing my lower ribs. It was such a weird feeling I thought I had kidney failure or something, but low a…

Hello all, seeking for a little advice on reality stuff: I'm currently editing a documentary I shot over the course of the last 1.5 yrs., my first own project with funding, we had a little team, but I also had to do some one-man-band stuff, with the result of: either sound or picture are good, haha - but I'm positive about the coverage, 35 hrs of logged material, Interview transcripts are done, currently in the very early editing stages of the "easier" scenes. Getting along decently. One of my headaches is, of course... sound. But this time the other way around, as in: On the shorts I usually do audio post for, I try and go by the book (namely Purcell's) as much as I…

Do you guys have any favorite Altiverb tweaks you do in the dialog mix? I've been working on this feature and use it quite a big to help get the dialog cuts to blend better as well as giving it a better, more cinematic feel within the room. But I always wonder if there's something I could be doing to help make it even better so I thought I'd ask people smarter than me! Thanks for any advice you can share! John
