  1. Now that sounds sketchy to me. Yes sound is pivotal, but calling it that as part of the hiring process screams fake to me. Come to think of it, the whole thing looks like it's written by ChatGPT to me. Lots of words that say nothing.

  7. Nobody can say for sure 100% what may happen at some undetermined point in the future, but those bands you mentioned are of course the ones we can use in the US at this time. Which one of them would be best is depending on where you work. In a lot of areas in Los Angeles, it’s fair to say scans in B1 look busy, but you can always find a few usable frequencies. A1 looks somewhat better, but random things like EMT can show up out of nowhere and wipe you out, even when the scans looked clear 5 minutes ago. Having one block of clear freqs in 941 might of course better than having 3 congested blocks…. But again, who knows what might be best on any given day at any given location. So many variables possible, including other sound mixers nearby (or driving by). And again, who knows if that gets auctioned off at some point in the future….? So in conclusion - get one of each and you should be covered - at least for now hah!

  9. I have been using these quick connect adapters on my sna antennas for about six months now. Highly recommend if you switch often between ENG and cart antenna setups. I am old enough to remember when the industry used Carbon Tet (carbon tetrachloride) to clean and degrease cables, read/write heads, circuit boards, even work surfaces, etc. Then there was the Władziu Valentino Liberace poisoning incident where use of Carbon Tet in his hotel room sent him to the hospital and he lobbied for its banning. Then the engineers I worked with started using liquid freon as a solvent for wiping down heads, lol.

  11. Vac cleaners use high power slip rings and are kind of crude for a mic signal and difficult to isolate from EMI. Their systems are quite big, for longer and thicker cables. Some even only have 2 "channels". The better ones come with constant torque springs rather than power springs. Over all, they are not made to be taken apart and I have given up attempts to harvest them from old units before. A DYH-1703 may have the right dimension, though also not small and the breaking system would probably need some modification to be quite. I do not have or have used one. I do use a DYH-1816 without the break on the boom but 3m max is probably too less for a bag to boom scenario.

  13. Didn't know about these but there's also "The Cable Binders" by Bubblebee. Seems to be the same thing and might be found at the same store you buy or rent your audio gear. At least that's how I stumbled across them.

  14. Agreed that it doesn't matter which color conductor is "hot" and which is "cold" as long as it is the same on both ends. If they are different then you will have a polarity reversal. Which will also (generally) sound indistinguishable by itself but cause problems when combining coherent signals. As for me, "established conventions" is as simple as, there were about a hundred star quad cables in our inventory when I arrived here, and whoever built them chose to wire them "blue is 2." So I wire all new cables that way as well. I leave the shell unconnected. The cable shield is still connected to pin 1, so the cable is still shielded for most of its length. But where two cables meet, because the shells are not connected to anything they cannot act as a true shield. As a result there is a small unshielded area that is susceptible to RFI/EMI and is a potential source of noise. In practice, I have never encountered a situation where I think this is significant. On the other hand, a shell that is connected to shield is susceptible to introducing ground loops into a system if it touches "grounded" objects that are at slightly different potential. The most notable example I have encountered of this was when a microphone had a significant buzz every time the shell touched a metal part of a building. In that case, floating the shell made the noise go away.

  15. I've had some luck with Nite Ize Gear Ties. I like the fact that you can lock those, so the cable doesn't untie itself which almost always happens when you don't want it to. I've dreamed of taking my vacuum cleaner's cable winch out and putting it on my bag.. but.. weight and noise.

  16. I’m based in the SF Bay Area and got the exact message yesterday. After sending my rate card and asking about the gear rate, I got a reply with lots of unusual wording which could be a translation issue saying they want to use their audio equipment. I only work with my gear and will pass but it does seem a bit sketchy to me. Here’s part of a much longer message: “I'm thrilled to extend to you a pivotal role as our sound mixer for this project. Furthermore, we'd appreciate your assistance in managing essential sound equipment, with funds allocated to you beforehand for any necessary arrangements on the location set. Given your track record in coordinating sound equipment in previous productions, I'm confident you'll excel in this capacity. While we understand the need to use your equipment, we'd prefer you to utilize ours for the project duration. Regrettably, we've encountered a setback as our main mixer is unavailable due to personal reasons, he just lost someone in the family. Our replacement hire from the previous shoot hasn't met our expectations either. Consequently, we're seeking an individual who can execute instructions seamlessly, demonstrate resourcefulness, proactively tackle challenges, and ultimately outperform our current hire.“

Martin Mitchell, here in the UK, https://martinmitchellsmicrophones.wordpress.com/2023/08/ tried a pair of Roland CS-10EM Binaural Microphones/Earphones last August, and added a couple of recordings to his web-page. These Roland earbud mics cost only about £80 (US$100) ..and I've just seen a used pair on eBay for £60 (US$75). The quality is really good (I have a pair), but - as DocSoundGuy says - although played back thro' earbuds the sound is immersive, with over-ear cans instead, or standard loudspeakers, the effect is more dispersed, 'lighter-weight' or rather tinny. With buds stuffed in your ears, reproduction does sound as if the listener is really there, but without having that replay sound stuffed straight down your own ear canals, you miss much of the immersiveness. But they're a cheap and great way to experiment - instead of buying a Zylia 19-mic golfball!

  19. Getting a strap that is truly ergonomic and that weights the case properly for carrying takes some time and experimentation. I reused a strap from an old camera bag, but it constantly falls off my shoulder because of how I've attached it. It's not practical for carrying it long distance with other cases. Ideally, I need a strap that has the shoulder pad farther up (so it actually goes over my shoulder, and that is contoured and textured so it doesn't slide down. I'm sure it's doable, but it's not as simple as I'd hoped.

(2’, 2.5’, 4.5’) (USD). Absolutely well built. I add a bit of Gaff on the bottoms just to protect / make it last longer. 2” straight tube is what you want.

  21. Hi everyone! Back in March I posted about my app Hush, which uses machine learning on Apple Silicon to remove noise and reverb from spoken audio. A lot of folks asked me to make an AudioSuite plugin to speed up the workflow in Pro Tools — so I did. It’s called Hush Pro, and comes with a bunch of new features designed specifically for audio post-production. The plugin includes two separate modes — or sub-plugins — that use the same engine under the hood but support different workflows.   22. Yup, I've done exactly that for a quarter of the list price. The carrying strap is the only hard part. I've come to really appreciate the value of a solid case for all my equipment. The Canford tube does look like a good one though.

  23. in 2024 this is still not clear airport to airport. I have been flying a bunch carry-on only lately. Calling it a Fish pole or mono pod seems to work and a mono pod it is authorized for carry-on bags specifically. But it truly is up to the discretion of whoever pulls your bag aside. Total gamble and I feel a bit risky with an expensive boom pole. Oh my aluminum traveler is compact and expendable if it came down to it as I knew I could bill for a replacement in a pinch with those I travel with. I typically will add a second pool in a checked bag or in one of their SKB golf bag cases if Camera Dept I am traveling with Will allow me to

  25. Yes, note that Matt Price was clearing this with airline desks during baggage drop-off and before going through security. Airline practice may be unpredictable, and indeed may have changed since his video was made. Personally, I’m content with putting a pole in my checked roller bag, and I know that the Panamic Mini poles will fit in it.

  26. I used to do that. The airlines were fine with it until they weren't. Now I play safe, because it's too much stress finding out at the airport that they want me to check a bare boom pole.

  27. That is pretty impressive on headphones. Good job! I always marvel at how good binaural directionality sounds. Your in-ear rig worked well! I'm still not convinced by the effect through loudspeakers ... it sounds hollow to me, as if you were breathing into a box. But that's wearing my picky sound-guy hat ... I doubt a casual listener would object. Thanks for sharing your work!

  28. OMG...so annoyed. After both of your responses on a lark, I did a web search for best pitch & time shift plugins and Izotope was one of the first hits. 🤦‍♂️. Pulled up the alt playlist with the original audio, applied the "Variable Pitch" tool, and the results were night and day. Was sitting in my toolbox the whole time.   29. This has already been posted to some effect on a couple of FB groups, but there are folks here that don't journey into the meta. My cart for the last many years was much larger as it housed a much heavier and extensive amount of components. I kept using the rig even as the gear became smaller and was capable of even more functionality. I decided it was time to re-think my set up and look for a more ergonomic and smaller footprint. I wanted a standing rig (yes, I sit during set ups and when not mixing), and something that would be more nimble in getting into tight spots. Looked at several different manufactures and custom cart rigs and settled on the Inovativ Deploy as the base structure. Needed some covers and extra bits here and there to fulfill the demands of production, travel and safety. Photos below are what we've ended up with. Always a work in progress but so far happy with the results.

  30. I've had the same warning pop up as well as another one saying I have "exceeded maximum allowed power consumption." They both have happened at totally random times. I unplug/replug the CL-12 and it goes away, or plug in the DC boost and it goes away. For information's sake; my headphones are always plugged into the 688. I've never plugged a keyboard or light into the CL12. Only other cable into the CL12 is the DC Boost. I've been told to try a different USB cable, I just haven't had the time to do tests. But, that seems to be everyone's advice; change the USB cable.

  31. I suffered the same issue for several months. Other fails would include the unit locking up and/or going into update mode. Lots of messing about, replacing aux usb power cables, etc, etc. -- Nothing worked. I replaced the USB cable from the 688 to the CL12 and the problem is solved. No more need for the aux power input, no more weird errors, no more shutdowns or lock-ups. I suggest replacing the factory USB cable with a good quality cable first, and seeing what shakes loose.
