  1. Aw my Gawd!!, I've even managed to annoy JW!! I think I'm going to pop off and have a good hard look at myself followed by an anxiety induced panic attack...... and maybe a pint or two... Seriously though I have to agree as someone 'vintage' enough to have worked on Nagra (only just though), I do miss the days when you could have a good argument down the pub without some clever AH pulling out their iphone and completely ruining it by Googling whatever it was you were arguing about! There is a lot to be said for hands on, but in the meantime I do like to get the opinions of soundpersons far superior to myself. I'm guessing your use of Cinela is based on experience with them, and that if they were rubbish you wouldn't use them, and that to me is where JWSOUND is worth it's weight in gold. A lot of sound people never got the chance to assist for long enough and were thrown in at the deep end and so a forum like this is absolutely invaluable. Also new kit (like Cinela) comes along, and JWSOUND is a great way of finding out the pitfalls before buying. A man in a shop is trying to sell you something and isn't on set up against it when the bit of kit locks up, goes wrong, or underperforms.... I remember buying my 633 and it locking up. I found the cure on this forum almost immediately....... for which I owe you a pint!! Gulp.....
  2. Maybe I'm being a bit touchy. Male Menopause no doubt!!
  3. Simon Bishop is a super-soundman for sure, I doff my cap. but the implication was that I shouldn't be asking people for their opinions on equipment. Or maybe I misread that. I don't think Simon really misses those days. This forum is too useful and I bet he's gleaned at least a bit of information about kit before he's bought it.....Thanks for all the advice though chaps.... I will try not to hit my pole or mic on the ceiling!! I'm outa here before I get taken off to some dark room for interrogation..... love you all... especially Mr Bishop!!!
  4. Thanks. I reckon I'll go for a Cinela if it's the best. It's expensive but hopefully it will last for years.... Looks like almost no-one keeps this in stock so it's gonna be a case of suck it and see. 14 day trial period....
  5. Thanks Matthias. Sorry I don't understand. What basket were you using which produced 'way too much handling noise'? You listed three baskets. Thanks Chris
  6. 'As a general rule - avoid hitting the pole, or hitting the mic on the ceiling' - wow, i'll get my coat...... getting prickly in here..... 'In the old days we didn't have the internet to ask, or to allow us a short cut. We used our ears, and the goodwill of our most excellent dealers and company reps - oh how I miss those days!!!!!!' - In that case what are you doing on these forums? I will go to a dealer and try them when I can, in the meantime is seems to me that this equipment section of the forum was set up precisely so we can ask our peers what their experiences of bits of equipment were?... or am I mistaken.....? If I am, I apologise...
  7. Maybe just a normal plastic one. You can get those ones that are kinked so they compress as they tighten. Think they call them spring washers.
  8. Get on the Raycom email list. They keep doing ridiculously good deals on Wisycom stuff every so often. Whole 2 channel kits for 3k ish.
  9. Just found this: http://blog.chrisdurfy.com/?p=526 Very useful review!! Thanks Chris Durfy!!
  10. Because they work better...? As someone who is starting to fall apart, the weight of the cinella is quite attractive. My hips have started to give me problems from carrying a sound bag for so many years. I'm 42. Not good. The less weight the better. Can't you put a rubber washer in where the tightening knob is?
  11. Well, quite frankly my old Rycote has been a good workhorse, but it's got a bit moth eared and is a bit embarrassing to be seen out with!! I'm looking for a newer fitter model!! To me it makes sense to buy the best. That's why I want to know what the best is!!! I'm not saying the old rycote doesn't work, but I'm imagining the newer models (Cyclone/Piano) have better characteristics!!! Tim are you saying that a well set up old style Rycote is better than a new Cinella Piano? Are there tests? I'll be interested if there are... makes you wonder why they bothered making the new ones then!! PS. 'No gear surpasses skill' Are you seriously saying you chaps have NEVER in the entire history of your careers hit your boom pole on anything?.... Ever? Really?.....;) I must be very clumsy.....;)
  12. True but you can't cut down a tree with a blancmange!...... I prefer to go for the best gear I can afford.....
  13. Well it depends what type of stuff you do. If you do sports stuff where there is a media scrum, your pole can get hit by camera guys, or if you're doing walking shots where you have to go through doors it can be possible to knock the basket. I remember once following the Foo Fighters from a dressing room to the stage. I had to boom as they were going to do a gig and I wouldn't have been able to get my radio mics back. Had to walk through all sorts of doors etc. I managed not to hit anything, but it was touch and go..... there was a camera topmic, but they talked to all sorts of people on the way. I know for you glamorous film guys it's usually a bit more organised but for us lowly ENG type chaps it can get a bit 'Kick boll&cks scramble'...!!...;)
  14. Blimey, just found this, it really is amazing!!!!!
  15. Wicked. That's the info I was looking for. Thanks Whitney. And everyone else!!
  16. Is it a Piano PIA-1 you have? How is the handling noise? Good?
  17. Yes thanks I saw that one. There are a few ones on wind noise, but none on the handling noise.... think I'll have to go try them out.... Have to say this one is a bit unfair. They are comparing the cyclone with no fur with the piano with fur...
  18. Sorry fellas I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong with the rycote basket I have at the moment. As you said they are the industry standard. I've been using it for years, it's just I want to work with the best gear out there and looking at the new designs by Rycote and Cinella they look like they are better isolated, and have better wind resistance..... didn't mean to offend anyone.... feel like I farted at a party !!,,,,,, seems like the piano is also super light too!!! I'll pop into Everything Audio. They're not too far from me.... thanks anyway.....
  19. Both the Cyclone and Piano seem to have the basket isolated from the pole, so if you bash the basket on a ceiling or whatever it doesn't transfer to the mic mount. Not the case with my current basket. Also on both the mic mount looks like a much better design than just sitting on rubber bands. The question is, which is better? Anyone done a comparison? Is there anywhere in Central London I can go and test them both?
  20. Sorry, bad use of words, not awful, I must be more careful, sorry. I just mean that I'm sure the new cyclone and piano have a better design now. I definitely get shock passing to my basket if I hit the boom pole. The mic is sitting on elastics, which do remove some of the impact noise, but not all of it. Obviously I'm careful not to hit the pole, but in media scrums or when running, that's not always possible. I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPLw0Ny5vhY The mount looks infinitely better design wise as far as handling noise, but I can't find any tests....
  21. Hi. Has anyone done a test of the handling noise of the Piano vs Cyclone. If you hit the boom pole, which transmits the least noise to the mic? Are there any youtubes anywhere? Can't find any. I've seen one showing wind noise, but not handling noise..... I currently have a traditional Rycote basket and it's awful. EDIT: It's not awful!!. Just bad enough for me to want to buy a better basket. Thanks fellas. Chris
  22. Thanks fellas. Will stick with my 60 I think... I did some tests with both today....
  23. So I need some help making a decision cos I'm rubbish at that. I have an MKH60 and I'm about to spend the 700 quid on a Cinella PIA-1. I'm having last minute doubts about whether to swap the 60 for a 416, before I commit to the PIA-1. I've been using the 60 for years. I like it because it is slightly wider than the 416 and good for running into a room and grabbing the action. My question is this. I know a number of people have gone from the 60 back to the 416. If anyone has done this could you tell me what it was that made that decision? I know the 416 can be better at picking out an individual in noisy situations, but were there particular events while recording that made any of you make the jump? I have read the other posts on this but none of them have really said specifically what the problem with the MKH60 has been. Like was there a particular noisy shoot where the MKH60 failed to do the job? My solution might be to buy both mounts and mics, but I just wanted some last minute opinions...... Thanks chaps. Love this forum. Chris
  24. Wow. That's a test I could have done with watching BEFORE I bought 4 channels of Wisycom....... ho hum. Cheers for doing it though. Out of interest, was the squelch set the same on both units? If you leave the MCR42 on the default 12dB squelch setting Wisycoms have a not so good range. Set 'em to 3 or 6dB and they become much better. Would love to see a test with the Wisy squelch on 3dB!!? Chris
  25. I notice there are all manner of very cheap sma extenders on ebay. Maybe I can rig something up. You can also get right angle sma joints for 2 quid!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=sma+extensions&_from=R40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=sma+extension&_sacat=0
