  1. Glen, Thanks you for your thoughts on the resistors. I did try to purchase 1/8-watt resistors, but my local supplier did not have them in stock. This was my first attempt in making a pad and so I did not mind spending a little more money for the 1% resistors. I also want to thank you for the great information you have posted on JW Sound over the years; I have gleaned a lot from them.
  2. Thanks for the idea of using silicone or hot glue. This is the second pad I made and more compact than the first. I also like Rick's idea about splitting up the resistors on both male and female XLRs. Thanks Rick, Jim, Vin and Craig for your ideas.
  3. Mirror, The heat shrink tubing was a larger diameter than I normally use. I did have to plan carefully and I reheated the tubing and pushed while it was soft. I understand your last sentence. I have had the same challenge.
  4. -35 dB ATTENUATION CABLE This project came directly from Jay Rose’s book Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, 3rd edition. On pages 179 to 181 Jay explains what resistors to use and diagrams three different circuits. I chose to make the “balanced output to balanced input” as a cable instead of building it into a XLRm to XLRf barrel. This attenuating circuit uses (4) – 301 Ohms 1/4 watt 1% film resistor and (1) – 15 Ohm 1/4 watt 1% film resistor. The challenge for me was figuring out how to get all 5 resistors soldered in the correct circuit design and still fit into a xlr connector. I have included 5 photographs that I made as I progressed, they uploaded out of order, tried to put them in order, no luck, I hope they are understandable. Thank you Jay for all your books. 1. 5. Hi Karl, I have the Neutrik right angle plug that you posted a link about. I wanted the cable to "clear" the battery tube and exit the side of the bag, so I wanted a tall connector shell. The standard Neutrik right angle plug would have to stick out towards the top of the SD MM-1 or the back once the microphone cable is in place. I agree the shell could be cut shorter if needed. Thanks for your comments. Mark

  7. After The Sound Guys quick release is screwed on to the boom pole, (without the the threaded part that is attached to the shock mount) you will add 1 1/2 inches the the length of the boom pole. I hope this answers your question.
  8. Hi Jeremiah, Sound Guys Solutions will add 1 1/2 inches. Mark
  9. William, Do not resort to violence. Use the side or rear rejection (of the microphone).
  10. Here is how Eric Toline told me to wire the Sennheiser mke2 for a 1/8 mini locking TRS for Sennheiser G3. Red wire (+) (signal) to tip No connection to ring Blue wire (-) and copper shield to sleeve Cut "mini steel cable" flush to the jacket length.

  12. How about 6 old Sony cassette recorders hanging around the judges necks? Works for me.
  13. Hi Lee, Here are 3 books that maybe worth tracking down for a more complete understanding of time code. I am listing them from inprint to out of print: Time Code Primer, SPARS (Society of Professional Audio Recording Services) spars@spars.com OR www.spars.com/spars ISBN 0-9658309-0-X Radcliff, John, Time Code "A User's Guide" 1993 Focal Press ISBN 0 240 51334 7 Tanenbaum, Jim C.A.S., Using Timecode in the Reel World, Third Edition 1, June 1997 Timecode Applications Manual and Supplementary instructions for Nagra 1/4 inch reel-to-reel analog recorders mark
  14. Happy Birthday Mr. Toline! And many thanks for the cables and audio help this last year. Mark
  15. Hi Simon, Thanks for the information on the cases. They will be of use to someone who does not want to do a "DIY" project. I found my cases for less than a dollar+ $2.50 shipping. I like making things and had the tools. mark
  16. Sennheiser G3 IFB / Cell Phone Case Mod / Sennheiser EK300 IEM I have been experimenting with modifying a Blackberry cell phone swivel holster case (HDW-23466-01 or 24208-001). The basic steps are: 1. Remove edge stitching enough to remove both magnets. 2. Make a template (punching/cutting guide) for the display window. 3. Punch or cut holes for headphone connection and window for the Sennheiser G2/G3 display window. 4. Stitch edges around the headphone cable hole. 5. Sew Velcro to the strap and holster face so strap will close without the magnets. 6. Stitch around the new window (you will need a curved needle). 7. Re-stitch around the edges. 8. Remove belt clip from the G2/G3 and insert into the new modified holster. The first one was a bit of a pain to sew, but number 2 is going smoother. Mark Kirchner
  17. Maybe a case for the TX like this one would be warmer? Mark
  18. This is my homemade "Lav Bullet." I made it from a broken drum stick, drilled, lead filled and 3.5 locking jack threaded into the bullet. My thinking, metal gets cold, it's wearable and a good use for broken sticks. Mark
  19. My grandfather worked with Clint on Coogan's Bluff , 1968. That's him (Tom Tully) with the pistol. Not the answer you wanted, but... I thought I would mix it into the pot. Mark
  20. Any good teacher using the Socratic method wants their students to be prepared for the daily dialogue, to form good questions, maintain a good work ethic and to keep the discourse in play. Senator Mike “the Professor” fits this definition very well. Now his personal style may cause some of the members some grief, but I see his intent as good. He is the master of Socratic irony. Speedy recovery Senator Mike.
  21. Mr. Bond, Do you collect ephemera related to the Nagra? If so you might be interested in a book by Jim Tanenbaum, C.A.S., Using Time Code in the Reel World, 3rd edition. In this work Jim states that his original edition was published and distributed by Nagra Magnetic Recorders, Inc. Jim’s manual is subtitled “supplementary instructions for various versions of the Nagra 1/4 inch reel to reel analog recorders.” Thank you for sharing your collection. Mark
  22. Derek The Redco information page was an easy way to show the details quickly, thats all. I only use the larger cable size myself so I cannot comment if the crimping jaws are different. Mark

  24. Hi Derek, The Sony NP-F570 is "no longer available" at B&H. They are still for sale on Amazon. Rayell was just looking for some feedback on other brands. Mark
