  1. Hi Rayell, I have been using 2 Watson NP-F770 4400 mAh batteries for about a year now in a 702T with no problems. I plan on getting 2 of the 7800 mAh batteries in the near future. Mark Kirchner
  2. One solution for this problem would be to move the loudest speaker away from the listener until balanced and only listen to the recordings on a rainy day. Were do I collect my $20.00 bucks?
  3. JRl, Check out this thread on JWSOUND. It looks like the 3/4 input is (-10dB) not +4dB (nominal) as Rick Reineke mentioned. My Google search / Tascam Dr-60 4 channel jwsound Mark
  4. JRL Confirm that your recorder will accept a line level signal. You will also need to confirm that your Sound Devices 442 mixer is setup to send a line level signal out of the “direct outputs” (TA3). Access the setup menu in the mixer. With the L (left) LED meter position at -12 is (light on) the R (right LED position should be at -30. The interconnecting cable that you will need to make or have made will send two separate (output 3 & 4) and distinct signals to one 3.5mm TRS connector. The unbalanced “Y” cable can be made with Mogami W2528 cable*, (2) TA3f connectors and a Switchcraft 3.5mm TRS (model # 35HDBAU or right angle 35HDRABAU) connector. Left Channel XLR Side Split the shield into to equal twisted lengths, tin them and solder them to pins 1 & 3. Solder the conductor to pin 2. Right Channel XLR Side Split the shield into to equal twisted lengths, tin them and solder them to pins 1 & 3. Solder the conductor to pin 2. Left & Right Channel 3.5mm TRS plug side Twist both shields together, (L&R) tin them and solder to the sleeve of the TRS connector. The Left channel will be soldered to the Tip. The Right channel will be soldered to the Ring of the TRS 3.5 mm plug. * Use a dual unbalanced cable like Mogami W2528 and (2)TA3f connectors. The cable can be split into a “Y”. Each side of the cable will have a shield and 1 conductor. The Switchcraft connector has a large opening that will allow you to use larger cable diameters like the Mogami W2528. Also mark the XLR ends so you know which is the L & R channel. I hope this helps. Mark
  5. Erik, What brand of antenna did you use for the mod? mark
  6. Eric, What a great photograph, love the dramatic backlighting! Mark
  7. Hi Bill, To get a better answer for the forum members, they will need to know what type (cardioid, hypercardioid, shotgun, etc) of microphone you are using, since each type has a different polar pattern. Then a recommendation can be made. Mark
  8. Hi Dan, I am using a Sennheiser G3 band (A) in Orange County. Samy's Camera in Santa Ana California only sells and rents only band (A). I hope this helps. Mark Kirchner Newport Beach, CA
  9. BOOM OPERATOR NEEDED SANTA MONICA From the photographs it looks like no boom is needed! We are a company that makes demo reels for actors and we're looking for a new boom operator to record sound. These are very easy, laid-back indoor shoots at a gorgeous, air-conditioned Santa Monica studio with complimentary snacks and drinks provided. All you will be required to do is hold up a boom microphone and label each of the sound takes on the digital Zoom H4N recorder, which we will teach you to use in 30 minutes. We only shoot once a week on Saturdays, usually servicing between 2-3 clients, which averages out between 6-8 hours. Compensation: $50 for Client #1, $25 for Client #2, and $25 for client #3. If we have 3 clients you make $100 for about 8 hours, if we have 2 clients it's $75 for about 6 hours, and if we only have 1 client, it's $50 for about 3 hours. This is a great job for anybody looking to get some experience on film shoots and make a little extra money once a week. We are a small crew of 3, and all of us are industry professionals who do this on the side. Hope to make you our 4th! Please e-mail telling us a little bit about yourself and why you'd like to join. Thanks.
  10. Hey Matt, Who will answer our questions on the Sound Devices forum while you are gone? Just kidding. Have a safe trip! Mark
  11. Have you reviewed all the materials relating to the 7 Series recorders on the Sound Devices Users Forum? There is some good information there. It sounds like you have two questions. One relates to your garageband software the other to setup the 91 different setup menu selections. I would print a copy of the manual and review the different factory presets (factory/film/reporter/music preset). My comparing them line by line you will notice subtle differences in the setup for different applications. Pick the one of the presets and make a sample recording. After you become more familiar with this unit you can start customizing your settings. By selecting any of the presets you will also be setting the track assignments. Mark 702t user
  12. Hold for the plane? Forget the plane, Hold for the Red Circle!
  13. I stand corrected, as Mr. Toline points out the correct term for the “caps” are (hole plugs). I do not remember reading about running the XLR connector under cold water on this thread to harden the hot glue. Thanks for the addition. It looks like there are 2 valid ideas about making low profile right angle xlr connectors. The first is the “repairable” hot glue style with a thinner cable stock like Redco TGS-1, the other is the non-repairable epoxy filed xlrs. Since I made my first set of cables with Canare L-2E5 cable stock the soldering was done with the terminal insert block insitu. So I cannot imagine taking this set connectors apart for repair, but I understand the importance of field repairs, problem solving and making thing with the ability to be repaired. Again, thank you Mr. Toline for sharing your wisdom. mark
  14. Hi Jack, The end caps are the silver colored metal caps that are sold in hardware stores. I think there is an unpainted photo of this type of end cap in this thread. I just painted them in retro style colors, like the colors they painter old motel outdoor chairs. I would recomend epoxy for the gluing of the caps and a clamp. The first attempts were done with hot glue and those caps formed a small gap as the glue is more elastic like. mark
  15. I am still photographer and educator. I am new to the world of location sound recording and dialogue recording. I have learned a lot from reading the posts on this site and making things (DYI). I would like to thank all the “do it yourself crew” for inspiring me to learn to build my own cables. I am posting some of the thing I have soldered, machined and sewed. Lastly a big thanks to Mr. Matt Lauer and Mr. Eric Toline who answered my questions by sharing their fine work. Mark Kirchner
  16. Friends that have gone to photograph at Burning Man complained, not just equipment issues, but respiratory problems and needed medical attention weeks after attending it.
  17. Hi Justin, I am new to location sound/audio like you. This is my second post on this site. Your question is a valid question, but the information you seek can be found in past posts on this site and in books like Jay Rose’s Producing Great Sound for Film and Video. My recommendation to you is when you pose a question that you do more research first, write your question down on paper and live with it for a day. Then edit out any information that is not relevant. Your goal should be a “clear/clean” question, not unlike the goal of recording clear and clean audio. As an example, you mention that you have upgraded your equipment to a Sound Devices 663 mixer/recorder. By mentioning this you have added information to your question that has changed the nature of the responses given to you. Instead of getting only information on mixing and panning, the respondents are measuring the depth of your knowledge against that 663. My own response is not going to give you what you are seeking, but I hope you will see the value in what I have stated and continue your quest for knowledge and experience.
