  1. terrific. Thanks for posting this. Any chance of linking the files? Cheers!
  2. what issues did you feel it had?
  3. great write up jose! My OR-30 is getting delivered tomorrow. I can't wait=]
  4. I was just wondering if anyone on the board had any hands on experience with this stereo mic? There's a serious dearth of information about it online and it seems very rarely stocked in the EU. I'd be using it for SFX collection, some music recording and stereo interviews for radio. I know Sanken's lavs and shotguns are held in good regard but this one seems a rare beast. Thanks for your time.
  5. 633 arrived today. after a slow unpacking and much "oh god this is expensive, should I keep this?" I quickly forgot my doubts and delighted in how much better my 4060s sound through it. I've only scratched the surface but I think we're going to get along just fine Thanks everyone for your help along the way
  6. i've not used those windshields but and this might not be the solution if you are looking for additional protection but I'm a big fan of haglofs technical bags. They're really well designed, made and importantly (for me) they look really innocuous when commuting. Perhaps a 'tight' (last season) or 'corker' might work? http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91wsbcagNTL._SL1500_.jpg http://www.haglofs.com/en-US/products/backpacksbags/travel-gear/unisex/
  7. import tax aint so easy to pay tho. warranties and repairs can differ between regions too. i prefer to keep it in the eu. 633 arriving soon so i can finally get a hands on a make up my mind=]
  8. there might be plenty in the states but in the UK a 744T is regularly listed as more expensive then the 633.
  9. thanks for that chris. that looks like a good option. discrete is definitely more important to me than holding extra equipment. the recorder will be with me on public transport and i'd rather not advertise myself for mugging;)
  10. Ok folks, I'm totally sold!=] (and a little excited) Now to decide if the optional KIT (cables, batteries, portabrace) is good value for money. [back into the seach engine]
  11. re. Jim. I have mailed some relatively local retailers and hopefully a trip to dublin might be in my very near future. Creamy guinness and a new recorder sound like an excellent way to spent the week;) Thanks Harlow. Another solid vote for the 633. Out of curiousity is there anyone who's used both who would very much favour the 702 over the 633, and if so why?
  12. they do! but i'm in northern ireland so i'd need one of these to drive to London
  13. unfortunately test driving isn't too easy based on my location, hence speaking up here. Thanks for taking the time to share your advice. The flexibility of the unit is indeed extremely appealing. I'm just toting up how much power chargers, batteries, cables and bag will add (ouch!)=]
  14. Thanks Christopher. That's just what I was hoping to hear;)
  15. Thanks Philip. Good point. I sense the 7 series is due an update/overhaul.
  16. Many thanks folks! Some reassuring praise for the 633. Just very keen to assuage any doubts before dropping that much money. Certainly. It was just from reading the "Sound Devices 633…What do you think?" thread on this forum Pg.6. member soundslikejustin- “The 7 series have differing Pre-amp technologies - the 744 (and 702/722) are very similar, but the 788T is a completely different design. ......the equivalent input noise specs of the 633 are higher than that of the 744T and 788T, equal with those of the 552 and 664. You would have to compare them to see if they fit your needs. I can hear slightly more noise in my 633 than my 744 at mic level with both trims opened fully. The difference in the noise spec between the 744T and the 633 is 4dB. (-126dbu vs -130dbu)” The 633 specs are listed online as - THD + Noise 0.09% max and the 702 is listed - Mic: 0.004% max (1 kHz, 22 Hz–22 kHz BW, gain control down, -15 dBu input); line: 0.004% max (1 kHz, 22 Hz–22 kHz BW, gain control down, +16 dBu input) ------------------------------- I'm not one to overanalyse spec sheets but another user chrismedr wrote on the same page. "on a bit more useful note: i've done a comparison between a 702T, 302 and 633 with a MKH 8050 a while back - it wasn't very scientific or controlled but i couldn't hear a difference between the three. on the other hand i did a mic comparison which was quite surprising: MKH 50, MKH 8050, Schoeps MK41, Neumann 185 on a 633. the MKH 50 had the least noise, the MKH 8050 and Schoeps MK41 somewhat more, and the 185 was very noisy (so much more that i had it checked because i thought it was broken). somebody told me that the SD preamps get noisy at high gain, and since all these are excellent mics, this seem to confirm that- the old MKH 50 series has hotter output then the 8050 or the MK41, and the neumann needs quite a bit of more gain. repeated the test with a MKH416 and again got very clean results (and as a side note - matches very well to the MKH 50 - so much that at times it's hard to know which is which). made me appreciate the MKH50 and 416 again because this also helps them to work well on cheaper recorders like zooms etc." -------------------------------- Don't get me wrong I know there's a wide degree of variability/subjectivity with these things, I was just throwing it open to hear what other users experiences had been like. thanks!
  17. Hi folks, I’m a radio producer/sound designer and I’ve been researching a field recorder for several months. Work dictates that might have to decide very soon but I could really benefit from some experienced advice at this stage. It would be used for a range of applications, high quality sound effects, interviews, classical music (choral) recordings and possibly work with camera down the line. I’m very keen on the Sound Devices 633 for several reasons. 1. it’s really flexible and has more than 2 inputs so I could get really creative recording events simultaneously from different acoustic perspectives. I love doing this. 2. love the storage options 3. intelligent power handling 4. Would allow me to experiment working on film sound (2 lavs + boom). The only thing holding me back on it is the quality of the preamps. I’ve read anecdotally on here that they can be noisy in some circumstances. I’d be using a Neumann 191/DPA 4060 but who know what tomorrow? Ultimately would it be wiser to opt for a Series 7 recorder like the 702T which would have a better front end? It’s the sound quality that matters in the end. A 744/788 is out of my budget. re. multiple inputs. Could some members who have used the 633 and 7 series comment on their experiences re. the relative quality of the pre-amps on these two products? or offer some thoughts/advice? Appreciate your time.
  18. Thanks for that info James. Much appreciated!

I was wondering how they'd fare re. noise. I've been in the market for upgrading my fostex LE for sometime, mainly been using a Nagra LB at work. I love the advanced power management on the 633 and multiple isolated tracks but can't decide if i'd be better off with a 7 series.
  20. all the best folks. onwards and upwards!
  21. I liked the film but didn't love it. There was a few lines I didn't catch midway through the film but it didn't affect my enjoyment until literally the last scene. I was trying to make out what was being said when the end credits appeared. It was a disappointingly hollow way to finish a film of that duration and engagement. There's indistinct dialogue in films all the time and it can be fine. The famous chest buster scene in Alien is filled with mumbled dialogue and it serves to give a documentary feel, making the viewer lean in and focus their attention more, along with subtly removing a facet of their control. All priming them for the big moment. With Interstellar the moments of indistinct dialogue for me were in simple scenes with 2 people talking to each other conveying story information. If it was a creative choice then it sure did nothing for me.
  22. and a sub 644 price point! 788T is out of my league
  23. Sound Devices redesigned update to replace the 744 model. 633 form + advanced power management/storage with 4 inputs of 7 series pre-amps.
