  1. Thanks John, I thought I was going crazy! Every program I have has a SMPTE window and the option to set the frame rate and df/ndf, but all of them revert to 00:00:00:00 instead of defaulting to the start number in the metadata.
  2. I'm a little dense when it comes to Pro Tools, but all I want to is be able to playback a file with time code and have the time code read in a window.
  3. Diversity systems compare the rf inputs from 2 antennas. It doesn't matter if they are identical or not. Usually you would want the 2 antennas to be a half wavelength apart to minimize the possibility of both hitting nulls simultaneously. I'm thinking this antenna would be more of a convenience than anything else, though in some circumstances having an omni dipole as the 2nd antenna could grab a signal (perhaps bounced off a wall) that the high gain directional lpa could miss. I'm curious why this antenna needs a jacket. In high wind or wet weather it could add a lot of weight. I've been using Zaxcom and Lectro antennas lpa's with cutouts to lessen wind resistance.
  4. Just added a Nagra to my rig for the first time since 1999. I was looking for a small rig for recording stereo ambiences. I tried a zoom, but the mics and mic pres were awful (not that I was surprised). This one sounds beautiful. I also like that most of the settings are done by hard switches on the back. Nice little rig http://www.nagraaudio.com/pro/pages/products_nagra_SD.php Billy Sarokin
  5. Look what happened to me the day I got grumpy on set sound destruction.mov
  6. Mike, the national camera local has been a disaster for the New York camera guys (old local 640). The NY local was much tougher. Now they're wimps on a national scale. Only the producers won in that merger.
  7. As Wandering Ear mentioned, use a Schoeps with a GVC (right angle) attachment.
  8. Hi Guys, Quick note about regular alkaline and lithium batteries and the environment. They are totally non-toxic. Basically they are fertilizer and can be disposed of in regular landfills or buried in your tomato garden. Rechagrable batteries are made of heavy metals, are very toxic and can only be disposed of legally through a certified recycler. Most towns long ago stopped recycling regular batteries. My town used to have a recycle box at the library and town hall but they gave it up. Billy
  9. make that two out of ten
  10. +1 likewise. I only use very minimal high pass, but nothing else on any of my mics. Never ever Billy Sarokin
  11. I use the 742 and 992 all the time. On the cart I use the standalone IFB transmitter with a 2.4gig power amp and high gain antenna. My Zaxnet range, for remote control, IFB audio and time code is as good as or better than my UHF range (it caries of course depending on circumstances, but 500' would be a good average). Remember, Zaxnet gives you control of the most important setting on your rig, the mic pre amp gain. Prior to Zaxnet if I wanted to change the transmitter gain I had to walk hundreds of feet and take someone's clothes off. Zaxnet is the most important tool I have on my cart. My over the shoulder rig uses a Nomad with a built in IFB transmitter and a little whip antenna. The Zaxnet range isn't as good, but it still covers most interior spaces (even large stages) and approx 200' outdoors. Billy Sarokin
  12. Wonderful post Jan. Like Jeff, I only crossed paths with Bill a couple of times, mostly via phone after he moved to New Mexico, but heard the stories about him from the moment I entered this business. If you take measure of a man by the friends he keeps you are his best legacy. Billy
  13. Thanks for all the responses. Who would have thought time code would be so confusing!
  14. Anyone know if Pro Tools Express will read and display SMPTE TC? I've been searching Avid and the web like crazy and cannot find out! Thanks, Billy
  15. Very curious about the Shure antenna. It says it's a wide band dipole but dipoles work best at their resonant frequency which is the length they're cut for. The overall length of the Shure is 11", so each element is approx 5", so it probably resonates around 500 mHz. DOn't know what makes it wide band unless they pack in a series of different lengths like a squished log periodic. Would also like to see how people use them in bag mode. Perhaps stuff one up each sleeve?
  16. The Zaxcom Mic Plexer is convenient and can be used with non Zaxcom radios. In its basic form it provides antenna and power distro for 4 receivers. Billy
  17. Love Simon's and Larry's posts! But one quick note on cables. The only difference between cables I've ever noticed was between normal mic cable (2 leads and a shield) and star quad cable (2 twisted pairs and a shield). RFI and EMI are the most obvious culprits in mooshing up the sound we record. Star quad goes a long way towards eliminating it. Billy
  18. Just found this thread. Thanks so much for taking the time to do the test and posting your results. Excellent! And appreciated.
  19. You got a resounding cheer with raised margaritas from all of us here in Mount Kisco, NY. Heartfelt congratulations!!!!
  20. Tandberg IIP. Had that for a few months before I realized I was serious about this and got a used 1968 Nagra 3.... followed in short order by a Nagra 4.2, 4STC, Nagra SN and the Nagra D
  21. Sad to hear. Like most of us, I wish I knew more about him. I only know the sketchiest outlines of who he was and how he came to play such a major role in our industry. Thanks Stefan for all you've done!
  22. A few years ago I used to use the 6x6' ice fishing tents. In the end I found them too flimsy so I went for the pop n work. But I was on a job in Puerto Rico where afternoon rain showers come through every day. The first day I broke out my ice fishing tent (which folds very small and light) it proved very popular with the local crew. The ice fishing company is still trying to figure out the order for 20 tents from a tropical island.
  23. I love my Pop n Work 6' by 6' tent. After about 7 years the poles are starting to give out and the thing sags, so might be time for a new one. As for heaters I carry a little 'Mr Heater Buddy' http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/395472-mr-heater-portable-buddy-propane-heater.html?utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=googlebase&gclid=CJ7s8-Sg1LQCFQpgMgodemwA2g#.UOm0YW_AeSo It uses 1 lb propane cans and runs about 7 hours on low and 4 hours at high. Out of the tent it blows out easily if it's windy, but inside the tent it's fine and safe.
  24. there was a solar power spill
  25. I'm in Taos now so I just went to check out my 'farm'. And also, knowing New Mexico, to make sure it really exists ;-)
