  1. They recorded sound optically and most of the original sound was pretty good.the sound had less low end and was a little peaky in the upper mid-range.
  2. You should always get a copy of the insurance floater for YOU ,saying that your sound gear is covered for the production --Period. J.D.
  3. I worked on a Italian movie in Los Angeles, it was union and we worked French hours.They had food available all day long and it worked out great.It was like we got to go home early because it saves over an hour to work "French Hours"-----start up time J.D.

  10. Get some kind of back-up recording----if something goes wrong with cam. sound, no matter what they told you,they will not be "cool" about it-----it will be sounds fault ! J.D.
  11. Soon, sync boxes will be expected to be provided at no extra charge. Mixers are already not charging for them so they can get the job.It was a mistake to provide them---remember, it attaches to cam. and should be provided by cam.----It.s too late now. J.D.
  12. To the OP---- maybe you should try to work with a mixer on some low budget shoots as a boom operator-----so you can learn about sound mixing and set etiquette. J.D.
  13. If you are going to be a sound guy, you need to buy a TC Slate. Also, it's a good idea to get a cheap "dumb" slate because nowadays the cam dept. many times forgets they should have one. The thing is that sound has been given the responsibility of sync----cam should be responsible for sync boxes on cam although a lot of sound guys have screwed this up to get rental. J.D.
  14. A small powered shotgun mic. might be better than a Lav. J.D.
  15. Avoid the PA if possible,if not keep it low----yes,you have to ask them about using a PA, because many times they don't think of it until shoot day,then it's a pain in the ass and they will blame you [at least a little] for the delay. J.D.

  17. Definitely one of my very favorite scenes was in "Little Big Man" where Dustin Hoffmans character first meets George Armstrong Custer-----get the movie and watch it if you haven't seen it. J.D.

  19. Marc, In 1974 we used SMPTE TC while recording on a 16 trk 3M M56 audio recorder and a video recorder on a Frank Zappa video . It was Zappa's deal, we didn't have a clue at the time. I worked at Wally Heider's. J.D.
