  1. Many times the boom is used to get FX and the wireless gets the dialogue, like shooting actors talking inside a car thru the windshield and then the car pulls away or door slams or ect. J.D.
  2. the union tier system and the side letters [agreements] have definetly made it happen that you can earn less on a union job compared to a non-union job. WE need to re-evaluate the tier system and the "new media" agreements, also these "side letters". J.D.
  3. I agree with michael. I've been mixer for 39 years and semi-retired. when I think back at those long hours and how it changes your life. remember,a director may do one movie a year and he doesn't mind putting in long hours and making the big money, but a sound man has to look for a job when the present job ends and so on and so on. and that is the one life you are going to live !
  4. I still think a ghetto blaster on your right shoulder is a better look. J.D.
  5. Chriskellett------You have just cursed yourself----wait until your next job----OOOOOOOOOOOO J.D.
  6. We have an oscar winning DP= NO PAY J.D.
  7. Loved the split-----some day again,Apple stock will fall big time, but not right now. J.D.
  8. If you do this they will put something on top of it .It"s better to have a small flower pot in middle of table. make it as small as possible, the faux flowers low and have it all rigged up and stick it to the table so it can't be moved. the silverware is a problem---give 'em burritos. J.D.

Try to use one boom mic.-----two mics. both open will sound funky if not on separate tracks, and even then may cause a problem in post.
  10. If the camera mic. is funky, then something is really screwed up.Can you just listen only to the cam. mic. alone ?

    Headphones

Many of the headphones for music have a "colored" sound and are not flat----I changed from the sony's to the Senn. years ago and love them [better isolation] J.D.

Most of the top mixers [many retired now] started out doing porno's up in S.F. . The tascam 60D [i think it's called] is a good choice----It's cheap and records a back-up and a cheap [$300 or under audio technica or rode mic.] and "Bob's your Uncle". J.D.
  13. These are made for musicians and film students. J.D.
  14. I find cos-11's and there wind gadgets with a rycote overcover works best. Also, a 4x4 scrim would help a lot because the problem is also [maybe] the sound of the clothes being hit by the wind. J.D.
  15. I've had this happen several times and it was ALWAYS some Bozo in post. They always bad mouth the sound mixer and assure the producer that it happened during production. Then you get the midnight panic calls-----no fun.
  16. I've listened to the Beats headphones and nothing magic about them------but, what do I know I used to use Beyer DT48"s [back in the day] and my brains got squished out. J.D.
  17. Two years ago, I shot there for a couple of days with lectro blocks 22,24&25 .No more problems than usual. The jets are easier to deal with than Malibu state park because they are low and go by quickly and if they are bad, they are really bad-----no tryin' to decide.I did those American Airline commercials in the late 70's and 80's and usually had an easy time of it, shooting on the tarmac. J.D.
  18. The mics. did matter a lot.I was a rock'n'roll engineer in the late 60's,early 70's and it wasn't as funky as you make it seem. J.D.
  19. the ballasts for the lights put out a lot of RF.Pearl mics. are sensitive to RF. Sennheiser mics. are much more resistant to RF J.D.
  20. The difference between "new school" and "old school" is I look at isos as safety back-up trks. J.D.
