  1. My computing life became much less frustrating when I removed Flash from my Mac about 4 years ago.
  2. I love my (2 pairs) Merrels. They are light and keep my feet cool. But I also have North Face that are water resistant that I use for soggy situations and recently retired a pair of Vasque that were my heavy duty hiking boots. It all depends on what you need. Do you need waterproof? Do you need to keep your feet warm or cool?
  3. That's the equivalent of pushing the camera op out of the way to take a look in the eyepiece. Not cool. I might have had to put the boom down to fix my headphones. Sorry.
  4. "I'm sorry, but I won't be able to help out with your project. Good luck, and thank you for your consideration."
  5. Tried to get sound of a dog barking and growling on a little shoot last year. The dog would get distracted by the boom and attack the mic so I put a lav on the dog's collar.
  6. Not me. It's just a computer, built in the same factories that all other computers are built in. The fact that OSX works better for me is the only thing that matters in my decision. I replaced my last Mac when it was 10 years old. I never got more than 4 years out of any Windows box. In my opinion, my Macs actually save me money in the long run.
  7. I love my MKH60 and MKH50, a lot, but someday I will try the 8000 series. And someday I'll get high wind protection for the 50 and try it outdoors.
  8. I had this question recently. Sound Devices has these instructions on their site: http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/recorders/changing-tc-battery/
  9. We only seem to hear about problems in the China factories. While Foxconn has 13 factories in China that employ as many as 450,000 people, Foxconn also has factories in India, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and Brasil. Perhaps this isn't a Foxconn problem, as much as a Chinese labor regulations problem?
  10. On this board we tend to look at things from a film production standpoint, but lots and lots of TV and documentary stuff is shot with sound straight to a video camera ... no sound person. I spent 20 years doing it myself. To me this device helps give video camera type convenience to DSLR shooters.
  11. Is this a really big country star that always wears a hat? If so, check with his people first. One that I have worked with WILL NOT remove his hat when people are around. This could be an issue if you don't have proper dressing facilities on this gig. The hat mount can work great, but it can cause as many issues as it solves (like hiding the cables) so I only use it if the wardrobe doesn't allow hiding a mic normally.
  12. Don't count on that. Tim Cook was the one person most responsible for moving Apple production overseas. Apple resisted this move to overseas production for a long time and was one of the last American electronics manufacturers to do so. I would love to see more of these jobs come back to the US, but it just isn't gonna happen. Almost all of the component suppliers are near the assembly lines ... in China.
  13. If Apple, or any other company, wants to remain competitive it has to produce products as efficiently and cheaply as possible. they are doing the same thing their competitors are doing by having products built by Asian contractors like Foxconn. That article could replace "Apple" with the name of any of the other companies that have their products made by contractors in Asia and the same conclusions would be true. And just for reference, Foxconn produces products for Apple, Acer, Amazon, Asus, Intel, Cisco, HP, Dell, Nintendo, Nokia, Microsoft, Sony, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and Vizio.
  14. I have something similar. I find I need to use it more often than I used to.
  15. Check all the used dealers, plus eBay, etc. I saw a used NTG-3 recently go for $400. Except in a critical side-by-side comparison 99% of people can't tell the difference from a 416. I think the Rode actually sounds a little better off axis (which is a good thing). Also, if you get a mixer with T power, you can find the 415t and 416t for $350 - $600. In order of preference, I like my 415t best, the NTG-3 second and the 416 last. I use these 3 mics interchangeably mostly for run and gun and doc style stuff. I prefer my MKH 60 over all of them for dramatic work. And you can find a more versatile Sound Devices 302 for $900. That plus one of the above mics gets you close to your $1500 budget.
  16. Can't find it for sale. B&H shows it as discontinued.
  17. It's closer than you think. One of the local elementary schools here already offers a Mandarin language immersion program.
  18. I have a Zoom H4n. Pros: Sounds great with a 302 in front of it. Built in mics are OK on everything but the quietest recordings. 1/8 input jack can bypass the built-in mics so it can record 4 inputs. Cons: It cannot adjust levels on individual channels, only in pairs. Controls are noisy when using the built-in mic. Also, a cheap Beachtek or JuicedLink box into the 1/8 jack could give you 2 additional XLR inputs with individual level adjustment. You could screw the box into the bottom mount screw. I built a battery box for mine. 4 rechargeable AA batts put out 4.8 - 4.9 volts max and can power the unit for about 8 hours.
  19. GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It should be listed on a sticker somewhere on your vehicle.
  20. Depends on the weight of the trailer fully loaded. Total weight of the loaded trailer and the tow vehicle cannot exceed GVWR, but having brakes on the trailer is a great idea if the total weight of your entire rig is close to GVWR.
  21. I'm not one of those smilie kinds of people but I guess my post should have been followed with . So hard to show sarcasm on a message board.
  22. I feel pretty certain if there is an issue with defective components in these phones, that Apple will make it right. Why do I trust Apple to take care of it? I received notice that Apple is REPLACING some 1st generation iPod Nanos that have a battery issue that MAY cause them to overheat. The issue affects devices with battery components from one supplier. These are 5+ year-old devices and Apple is replacing them. I just checked the program and my old Nano sitting unused in a drawer does qualify for the replacement. They are sending a shipping box, no charge to me.
  23. Well, they make and sell MILLIONS of these devies. The idea that every single device is supposed to be perfect is ridiculous. Defects happen. Components fail. EVERY manufacturer has issues they need to deal with.
