  1. Hi Take, Yes. We actually stopped recording and start a new one every 40 minutes. The pre-roll is to save us from the missing few seconds in between stopping and recording a new take. Yes, Boom Recorder is capturing audio at all times due to the pre roll but it will then starts writing to a new file. Hope it clears things up a bit.
  2. Hi Richard, I've worked on a project that also used Yamaha digital board, going to MOTU interface and to BR and we've also experienced this issue. The workaround we did was to set BR to pre-roll by 6 seconds, and every 40 minutes we would manually cut the audio files and record a new track (you have 6 seconds to do this according to the pre-roll). Just stitch back the audio files. We did not have any digital distortion again after the work around. I would recommend this in case anyone is going to use BR for a long recording session with multiple tracks.
  3. Nicely done, thank you :-)
  4. The most important thing right now is not to write anything at all on the CF card. Accessing is ok. Formatting or even erase basically give it a "it's OK to write over old files" permission so unless you have new files recorded it should still be there. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  5. Try this software, Recuva. http://www.piriform.com/recuva A friend had the same problem, albeit on a hard disk. Recuva managed to salvage some files. Good luck brother Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
  6. *very low voltage you have a good chance of never recovering the current file that you are recording. apologies for the structure error, am packing to move to another location right now Cheers friend! Hope the weather is nice in China to roll sound edit : in hindsight I should've said with digital recording media you shouldn't push your luck with power. ( except for maybe Zaxcom )
  7. I never said it was, just sharing that if you lose power or running on very low voltage the file you have a good chance of never recovering the current file that you are recording. Pascal technically explained the TOC thing (thank you very much)!
  8. First error discovered! I was rolling on very low battery (supposed to be one shot away from base turns out to be 4 shots, I was away from my NP1 powering system and the new AAs that was used on standby in the 664 was very used up by now), probably didn't shutdown properly. I can't even get the file out of the card (to transfer into my drive - it says copy error; pc goes into an infinite loop of trying to copy/error). Tried to open it straight from the card and got a 'corrupted' file error on Adobe Premiere. So I guess 664 users should never push your luck with low power Lucky for me it was just a passing shot of a van. Not dialogue shots.
  9. Just cleared my shipment from customs yesterday. Was quite blown away by what I hear from the mic today (shooting interior, old VW van) I think it could've been the first time I actually am smiling while rolling sound for car shots One thing that is very handy, the mic (if you purchased with a Lectro TA5 connector - I got mine from Pro-Sound) is that you can use it on a UM200C without the need to apply phantom power (such as the UH200D). This will be my miracle-worker mic for car tracking shots and office-sit down interviews. Planning to get another unit once next feature is confirmed
  10. Can I say that a good mr Karl Winkler who handles @Lectrosonics twitter account and general e-mail customer service have been great at answering a lot of my questions that I've been sending to him (that I wouldn't want to post here) and have been very helpful. Quick reply, fantastic support. Now... onto more Lectrosonics FAQs to read (what a treasure of knowledge to put up on the internet).

    Card test.

Hi everyone, first topic here. I searched a bit before posting so hopefully this isn't a redundant topic. I was a bit paranoid with media since I'm reading a lot of media problem and myself having a problem with a 552 before, upon a bit of searching there's a way to check whether your card is original or a fake copy. Use this tool http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/H2testw.shtml Unfortunately it's Windows-only, hopefully someone else can suggest a mac alternative. If your card is original, when you verify the test - it will come up with 0 errors. Hope this helps you get a peace of mind when buying new cards. Good day, F
  12. I could be the first in my country to use this product (likely) and I am glad to report that after 3 days of shoot in Malaysia's weather (roughly 33-37 degrees celcius) I am not having any problem whatsoever. Using the recommended SD card. Loving the routing capabilities. At first I was disturbed by the noise but upon a quick check with a good fellow mixer Martyn Truman it was just an unterminated connection noise, it's not a channel mic level noise (something you bound to get with old Wendt mixer). As of right now, I absolutely love this machine. It's day 3 of 28. We'll see how it fares through the whole 28. Thank you SD.
  13. First real working test today. Keep getting something like wind sound (sort of the mic is outside-exterior) indoor when the ACs and all fans off/doors/windows closed even though the B3 is hidden inside the clothing. Talent 1 is on COS11, didn't hear it. So now I know why my next purchase will be Sankens. B6 is good though, didn't have the same issue. Sent from my MK16i using Tapatalk 2
  14. Brilliant discussion everyone, as usual enjoyed every input. I'd ask for one more only if I really need it and they themselves know it was a bad take (plane, car, external issues that cannot be controlled by production). One thing to consider is, most times - great directors are actually looking for the perfect delivery (tonation, body language, facial expression, timing etc). So when I ask for "One more" it's not always just one more. It'll be repeated till he get an exact take (or better take) of the last take that he was happy with. In the case of no repeat performance (they won't give us one more), I'd get wild lines on my own (with the cooperation of the AD of course). This is to give the post guys something to work with in case they need to salvage something out to rescue the bad audio take. Then there's also a case of directors who would say "I'll use the audio from the previous take" or for TVC, they'll ask you for a cold recording of the script at the end of the day. I'd be happy to oblige.
  15. Hey Vas! Yeah. Anyway I love the Poly wav recording function. A former college-mate of mine is now doing post production (and going to do the film I'm rolling in a few days) I sent over one file to him and he loaded up in Protools, all the tracks showed up with their track names. Workflow simplified for practicality (and yes I was aware of Poly wav even since 744Ts but the company I worked with before only use 744T as a stereo recorder and not a multi-track recorder (we roll those on Nuendo (using MOTU Traveler and Yamaha 01V). Regards from Malaysia. F.
  16. My general idea since is the Left track (Channel 1) is always your primary audio. This means if you happen to have that day where lav placement are not working, you pan the boom to the left channel (and still have the lav but on the right channel). Regards, F.
  17. Hey Matt how are you. Saw your shotgun review on Youtube the other day. Thanks for that. Regarding the media, My 664 arrived last week. I was given a 32 GB Sandisk SDHC Ultra 30 mb/s. A few days ago I re-checked the approved media and found that it wasn't in the list so I head out to buy 2 16 Gb SDHC Ultra 30 mb/s. Curious as to how the 664 deal with the media of the same class but not capacity. Today I armed all the tracks and record silence for the whole 16 GB. No lockups and no errors. Hope it stays that way for the next 30 day feature film I'm rolling. Regards, F.
  18. Good production sound have started since Puteri Gunung Ledang (2001-2002?) We have people with 788Ts, Lectrosonics + Comtek systems here. I never known of anyone using Zaxcom though. We have proper location recording (stop traffic) and there is a lot foreign TV commercial that shoots and use local soundies. Since 08, the numbers of chinese films have spiked and most of it demand good location sound for foreign release. I suppose you haven't met the right people. There are good production mixers here (and by this I don't mean me myself but look up the member "Vinc" in this forum. He's the top soundman in Malaysia (and my ex mentor!)
  19. (Image for sizing purpose in case it's handy for anyone else trying to visualize the difference) I have used the COS11 ever since I joined location sound so that for me the 'standard' sound in lavaliers. Recently I started on my own and couldn't resist to get a few Countrymans (mostly because of cost and for the sake of trying something different). I have a few days of shoot on the B3s and just got my B6 from the States. Based on what I am reading from the this thread, I (or rather the actors) should be extra gentle with the B6s. Sound wise I have yet to try it in on a real-world shoot. Most probably will use the B6 on women (mostly when they wear super tight fitting wardrobe (the thinner cable comes in handy here) and generally they won't get involved in extreme actions unless the script determines so. I am also looking forward to try to have the B6 in plain sight (hopefully when the camera is on wide shots). Best regards, F
  20. Hi Matt, the thought of long-press came up to mind. We tried that only to be greeted with a blank-screen. I'll work with the 240i again on the 19th,20-21st. I will take a picture of it for reference. Good day
  21. Sorry, also while we're at it - is there no way at all for us to change the video mode such as the white balance? One AD gave me an earful on how the picture on the Pix wasn't the same as on the Epic's monitor. Same deal again, checked every menu there is and browse through the manual very thoroughly and can't find it so I had to tell them to do the color correction/grading in post. Edit: The color on the Epic was a bit more yellowish tint while on the Pix it was more blue-ish. I think it's just a simple white balance setting.
  22. Ahh, I must have missed the menu or the rented 240i wasn't updated to the latest firmware. (I did looked up for this function in the manual by the way). Good to know it's there. Thanks for the tip
  23. Hi Jon and the good people of Sound Devices (SD). I have had the chance to use and operate the 240i for a few days of shoots. One thing I find quite challenging is the inability to delete recorded clips. At the moment there is only the option to erase/re-format the media. Is this something SD intentionally planned to do or have yet to do (work in progress and will be featured in the next update)? Interesting to note is how much power hungry is the recorder. I just bought a PSC Powerstar Mini and a brand new NP1 so I tested it on the 240. The total runtime was around 6 hours. Two Sony NP L-series battery used together yielded more runtime but still it's quite a power guzzler. Looking forward to having this new product in my country. A lot of crews (or rather the producers) seems to be fond of the Pix recorder (in comparison to other alternative such as the Atomos). I do hear a lot of this question 'Why the name Sound Devices (your logo) on a video recorder?' Loving the record run mode (with Arri/Red/Canon flags). Automatic record and stop. The 240 was also quite tough. We were shooting the new Discovery 'Boom De Ya Da' commercial and one of the location involves a very muddy place (track for ATV). I was handling a wireless video antenna when some of the technical crews took it upon themselves (chasing magic hour) to push the magliner from one point to the other. The 240 dropped from the top level of the magliner to the ground. Luckily the ground wasn't rock solid. The 240 is still up and running after that incident and doesn't seem to be having any problems save for a few clean-up wipe. I think it is a video product but with very good audio capabilities (digital/analog or even digital+analog ins), Lemo 5pin TC in/outs (even though there's already TC on the SDI in but not HDMI-can be used to stamp HDMI in) and pro res 422 out, it's a good tool for the video side to simplify the workflow and speed up post production. Regards, Fauzan.
  24. On a technical support angle, I love love love @Lectrosonics' Twitter account. Really helpful in answering questions promptly. The fact that they answer to personal tweets makes me feel close to them, in a friend to friend kinda way not a sales exec/customer vibe deal.
