  1. Still waiting for a link. Periscope only has a bunch of test streams, as far as I can tell.
  2. I would suggest that you flush the cache in your browser. Different bits and pieces of web sites in transition can get stuck in a browser's craw and wreak all sorts of havoc. Wiping the cache forces the browser to start from a clean slate and very often remedies the sort of symptoms you are observing.
  3. Well done, and if you don't mind, I'm cribbing several of your ideas for my own cart. Where did you source the acrylic (or other material) for your script holder? Thanks!
  4. Not entirely on point, but I've been associated with three projects over the past few months that used AirBnB to rent their filming locations. And those same three projects have further reinforced my firm belief that I will never, never rent my house to a film or television production, regardless of the amount of compensation offered.
  5. Jonathan, I realize you're only commenting on the status quo, but it still chaps my butt when I hear things like this. Reasonable accommodations that allow the sound department to do their job are not "favors", and characterizing them as such should not be tolerated, in my humble opinion.
  6. If you can swing a stay at the Le Château Frontenac, you absolutely should. Have a drink or a meal there, at the very least. One of the five most enjoyable hotel stays I've ever experienced in my life.
  7. Looks a heck of a lot better on my mobile phone. Well done, and thanks! About the only hiccough I notice so far is that going to the home page drops you into some sort of a chat mode.
  8. I realize tax season is now behind us, for most of us, anyway. But I wanted to add a coda to this thread to correct something I said earlier about the appropriate place to report rental income, for the archives. Based on what I thought was the clear meaning of the words in IRS' Tax Topics 414 (viz., "if you are in the business of renting personal property"), you should report income on Schedule C. As it turns out, there is justification for interpreting this language to in fact mean "if you are primarily in the business of renting personal property". If, on the other hand, renting personal property (i.e., your gear) is incidental to your primary business (i.e., furnishing location sound services), then reporting gear rental income on Schedule E becomes defensible, thus avoiding the dreaded Self-Employment tax. This material distinction between gear rental being one's primary business versus being incidental to another primary business was pointed out to me by Nancy Adams, CPA of Adelman Katz & Mond in New York. For those who haven't watched it, Gotham Audio has a three-part seminar on Tax and Finance for Production Personnel on Vimeo. You can find Part I here. Nancy is the main presenter and very clearly lays out most, if not all, of the tax issues that a freelancer should know about. It also covers insurance and other relevant topics. It's absolutely worth the time. Cheers.
  9. Pierre: I cannot find the SRb Tech Note you reproduce on Lectrosonics' web site. Do you have a link perhaps? Thank you. - Scott
  10. I guess it's a good thing then that highly ambitious public infrastructure projects always get built on-time and on-budget. :-) If that train gets finished for the budget its proponents have said it will, and doesn't need a bail-out or some other cash infusion in its first five years due to low ridership, I will eat my hat.
  11. What side of town do you need to get to? I am driving back to Culver City on Wednesday shortly after class my wraps up, at 4:45 pm. Would that help you at all?
  12. If certainty changes, should I RSVP again? I originally RSVPed at 50%, but now I'm 100% certain I'm coming. Look forward to seeing y'all there. This will be my first NAB, so please be gentle.
  13. Forget beef. Take a look at nuts. It takes 1.1 gallons of water to grow one almond. That's not one pound of almonds. That's one single almond. http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2015/01/almonds-nuts-crazy-stats-charts Agreed. We need to do more about our consumption of water. BTW, are we on-topic with this?
  14. In case anyone happens upon this thread (like I did), you will find the link provided by Mr. Fisher above no longer works. I believe the correct URL as of this writing (March 2015) should be: http://www.lectrosonics.com/Support/Microphone-Wiring/uhf-transmitter-5-pin-input-jack-wiring.html
  15. I've got some buddies in academia that host several sites at tummy.com and they swear by them (not at them). Customer service and responsiveness of tech support is reportedly first class. You certainly won't be the first to bail on godaddy for subpar service.
  16. Have you seen this one? <http://www.prosoundeffects.com/firearms-foley-collection.html>
  17. I've seen similar services advertised for hard disks and SSDs. They will burn these in for a flat fee as well. The one I used very helpfully suggested that, before I shipped my drives in, to do a low-level format and completely zero-fill them. As a result, shipping costs were greatly reduced due to the lower weight. I didn't realize that data could weigh that much, but I guess it really adds up, especially now that drives are in the terabyte range. - Scott
  18. Wow. Just received my license. 10 days after I applied. Yes, 10 days. And it's valid until Dec. 2022. Not what I expected after everything I've read here. But pleased nonetheless.
  19. Possible solution here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6523107
  20. I'm pretty sure it's this item: <http://www.ebay.com/itm/pair-of-Schoeps-CMC-6-Cable-Microphones-/161615621059?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25a10aabc3>
  21. Driving in the US will be much easier than in any other country I've driven in. Switching sides just requires a little more focus. Actually, the roundabouts common in the U.K. gave me more trouble than the side-of-the-road issue. The difficulty comes when you need to make instantaneous decisions where you rely more on instinct than on your conscious mind. This used to pose a problem for me when driving in rural U.K. where the 'B' roads are frequently single lane and often tightly closed in on both sides by hedges or walls I.e., no shoulder). When I see an oncoming car just round the bend I automatically pull to the right until I remember where I am. This always elicits a bemused expression from the other driver. I am tempted to make up a quick sign I can flash that says, "Sorry, I'm an American". You'll also be quite pleased to see how much less petrol prices are here than the rest of the world.
  22. There's a link to an English version PDF at the bottom of the page. Here it is: http://www.afsi.eu/download/sites/default/files/uploads/ixml_ibc_validated_propositions.pdf
  23. José and RP: If the opportunity presents itself the next time you speak to your accountants, would you mind terribly asking them what their authority is for characterizing rental income as Schedule E income? Obviously they must know some secret section of the Tax Code or something else that justifies their interpretation. If I'm wrong, I would love to know what they're reading that I'm not. Thanks!
  24. Well, if your accountant is prepared to defend you in an audit AND not charge you for the defense, then, by all means, go for it. The authority I'm basing my assertion on is the IRS' own tax publications, which I assume to be correct. In particular, I'm referring to two different places where it specifically says income and expenses related to personal property rentals should be reported on Schedule C: - Tax Topics 414 (see first paragraph) http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc414.html - Form 1040 Schedule E Part I (introduction) http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040se.pdf I once knew a guy who liked to say his tax returns were his first offer to the IRS, and if they accepted, more fool them. Well, I, for one, am a bit more risk-averse than that, and choose not to tempt fate. Others I've known who've actually done battle with the IRS invariably claim the toll taken in stress, time, and expense was not worth the effort. Best of luck to all!
