FYI: I actualy ordered a custom MZL (Sennheiser mic module) to Binder (conbox) cable for my MKH8060 to be even shorter for a very small basket solution (Rycote WS 1). It will take some time to be made though. PM me, if you want some details.

It also helps to solder the right connector directly on the DPAs instead of going with the MicroDot connection in between. I do so, but gave it to someone who does this on a regular basis (i.e. FTT Kortwich in Berlin - ask for Karl!). I have used Sennheiser, Deity and DPA and some others and found the DPA 4060 to have pretty robust cables. Same for the Senni MKE2, but the cable is really stiff and prone to noise. The most robust is easily the DPA heavy duty stuff - but that comes at a price, too. Being bigger and having stiffer cable are just some.

We use the Kortwich figure8 quite often and I can say it's not noisier than a CCM8. The sounsstage looks problematic but we made many comparisons with other figure8 and we never had any issues. It can be with very close sounds, but how often are you using M/S for that? Just my experience.

I have the figure8 from MBHO/Haun. It's much bigger, though. Comparable to a CMC8 MK8 combo. Small and good sounding is the figure8 from Kortwich, but it's a special construction: http://www.filmtontechnik.de/en/products-from-kortwich/microphone/ We use it often when the CCM8 is too sensitive for heavy booming or on camera. It sounds very good for me.

+1 as well. I did some doco projects with a Sennheiser MKH418s or AudioTechnica BP4029 as a boom mic only. While it was far from a great Stereo recording, the outside athmos were sometimes really spectacular! I'd never use that integrated M/S mic again inside, but outside it's just fine and easy to use in a standard basket. And inside it does not sound worse than any other shotgun in this class. I'd say use a 2/3 combo setup, that you can change quickly. Your MKH 50 for indoor booming. Just a shockmount and a super-softie for example or a Cinela as the best indoor booming shockmount available. Your MKH 416 in a standard basket of your choice for outside booming. Some day, you want a better and smaller shotgun though. The MKH 8060 would be one. For the stereo athmos you'd idealy use another shockmount or basket for the M/S combo of the MKH 50/30 I'm building a comparable setup right now and quickly changing from shotgun to card/supercard is key for me. Recording stereo ambiences will mean a 2nd card with a figure8 in a basket, which I luckily have here. Even better would be 2 cards/super cards for A/B stereo ambiences. Sounds even better in most circumstances. But this will mean a even bigger setup! You can also use 2x lavs in a mini-basket for A/B stereo athmos, too. This will make for an extra lightweight setup! Will soon build something out of DPAs or the cheap Deity W.Lav Pro mics in an old basket lying around.

Maybe that's just me, but things like NoiseAssist or AutoMix have never been part of the official specs. They were added after and it was clear form the beginning that this is a paid upgrade (not update!) for the recorders. The good thing is that you don't need to pay for it if you don't need it. I always ask clients what they want and that something like NoiseAssist is availabe if they want. But it's an extra service. Very simple for my clients, very simple for me. All in all, SD is adding a lot of extras and features for their recorders with additional free updates. I still feel they listen to customers.

I just returned from a job in Tanzania, where I also used the MBC604 with the KA500 for indoor booming and some exteriour athmos. Humidity was quite high and I didn't experience any problems. That was all wired though. As I only have a Deity Connect and Sennheiser EW100 G3, that is what I can test it with only. I'm in home quarantine, so that there's plenty of time for some tests.

Same here. We entered easily with a small sound bag, boom, mics and wireless. No carnet - just tourist visa. Bring spare cables and be prepared for longer periods without recharging possibility. It depends highly where you are, though. I always carry big power banks, which will give me 3 days of constant power. I always enjoyed working there! I'm also in Tanzania right now. Man it's hot here!

It's just a cheap one I already had for other uses. It works fine even for hours of continous use. But the freezes seem to come from the powerbanks energy management. Definitely an issue, but one I can work with while having this gig in africa right now

FYI: I'm using my MixPre6 II and 2x Tentacle Sync E's for a 2 week shooting in east africa right now. Everything seems to work as expected. I use the MixPre as the TC Master and sync the 1st Tentacle with a 3,5mm mini jack cable from the Stereo out as described here: https://tentaclesync.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004293485-Sound-Devices-Mix-Pre-3-Mix-Pre-6-and-Tentacle-Sync-Workflow- The other Tentacle is then synced via the app. Can't really see any problem. But only if the editor tells me all is fine I know it works correct. I'd just feel more comfortable with 3x Tentacles as the MixPre does give me a 'TC was interrupted' or so message from time to time. But I never can see any TC mismatch by eye. Also, the MixPre just freezes sometimes when powered with a powerbank. It always happens right after starting it sothat I can avoid issues, but I don't feel very comfortable. That might be an issue with the powerbank I use, as I did not see that behaviour with my Sony NP-F style batteries or AA cells. What I really love: I put a little USB stick into the USB-A port for s constant backup on a 2nd media. You can't really control if it works, but it never let me down until today. At the end of each day I just put another USB Stick into the MixPre. Then all media is copied to that stick that serves as a transport drive for the backup station. This way I never have to fiddle with the SD-card.

THX for testing that out yourself. Highly appreciated! To be honest, I have a wired Sony FP battery sled, that sits in the bag. Lots of old batteries of that type collected dust. Now, they have a new life. Even more efficient are USB powerbanks and angled USB cables. That way you can still have the AA battery sled as a safety option. Powerbanks are very low profile and soo cheap.

FYI: I ordered a few antennas from Kent at https://www.wa5vjb.com/products2.html Very nice and friendly service. Recommended! Unfortunately, I won't receive my Deity's anytime soon. Probably mid january. I'll do some tests against my G3s, though.

Hi, next year I'll propably have a gig overseas where it's not possible to rent pro sound equipment locally. As I don't have my own cart I'm thinking of building som kind of ultra portable mini cart. I also try to avoid hi shipping costs, too. We won't have that many locations, but mixing from the bag is not what I want, though. We have either 2 or 4 talents, that need to have lavs plus recording some athmos during breaks. What's needed: - Mixer/Recorder MixPre6 together with a Nano Kontrol (Studio), might also be a bigger boy - Mics MKH8060 on a boom MBHO modular mic set (3x amp, different capsules) Small windbasket, Stereo Rig, etc. - Wireless/lav Deity Connect x2 (4x TX, 2x Duo-RX) + a few Sennheiser G3s (just in case) - Antenna for 2.4GHz (?) - PDS + batteries for Mixer/wireless and for charging the Deity TXs (!!) - cables - stuff for placing the lavs Anything missing? Possible or bad idea? THX

FYI: There are SMA splitters and lots of cheap directional antennas out there. I'll be able to build a true diversity directional antenna system for 2.4 GHz for approx 100 bucks.

Yeah. Four antennas might sound a lot, but if these guys are that cheap - no problem. I think I'm gonna check this as soon as I receive the first Connect set. I see there are lots of simple directional antennas out there. As you said, most of them with RP-SMA for WiFI routers and such. How long shoould the cable be max? I think as short as possible?

Are there ways to improve the antennas of 2.4GHz wireless receivers such as the Deity Duo-RX? It has standard SMB connectors for both antennas, though. I wonder if some kind of directional antennas will improve the range for stationary gigs. Or if these do even exist. I plan to build a 4x TX wireless with the Deity Connect early next year. But I need to do some tests to be confident about these guys working correctly.

I ran my MixPre6 with Sony NP-F style batteries on a seperate Sled outside the actual recorder. With an older NP-F970 - 7,2V - 6600mAh I was able to run through a day whilst still having 30% left. But I only used 2x wired lavs or 1 lav + 1 MKH8060. You can also use USB Powerbanks with 20.000mAH that should last 1-2 days. These are dirt cheap sothat you can carry lots of them and use them afterwards for other stuff. The Zoom F6/F8 are no slouch either when it comes to power consumptions. The MixPres are okay, but not great in power consumption. If you don't need Bluetooth for the Wingman app, that will save some extra juice. Reduce the brightness of LCD/LED and it needs even less. The amount of energy via phantom power will determine how much power you'll need. How many mics will you run?

We often used the Sennheiser MKH418 or the comparable AudioTechnica BP4029 for small crew doco projects. Both are easy to handle M/S shotgun combos. Sure, they lack the wide stereo athmo of separate stereo recordings, but I still like what we did. Also, it's not the most quiet M/S combo, but still nice.
