  1. When I've had that happen, it's typically because the coil has become too wide internally. I would remove the bottom section, like you've done, and tighten the coil(twisting the base) so the coils are smaller. And then reattach the base. Hope that helps.
  2. It's not going to be the feet that make the noise. It'll be all the rocks moving. You can make them wear the thickest rubber or soft material all day but you'll never stop the gravel from moving. I've always wished they made rubber gravel for the movie business for this particular instance. Wish I had a solution, but for the tighter shots, booming from underneath is your best bet. Or wires, high and tight, to get the signal to noise ratio acceptable, and let post do their magic.
  3. Dang, flying out that morning. I was hoping something like this was happening while I was out there. Anyone know if Trew Audio is still doing pizza Fridays?
  4. One of my favorite jokes to tell G/E: How does a boom op have sex? "Is it in? ... Is it in?" And I always thought it was with just the tip in
  5. Very funny! But, you missed a perfect opportunity to reply with "Dave's not here, man!" (null)
  6. When I ordered my drawers, they had all the standard drawers in stock. I waited on only the custom pieces.
  7. +1 for Rackman, I also went that route, via Jeff's recommendation. If there is any customizing you'd like done, they typically will do it for you also. I had several Custom drawers made, and they were very accommodating, and do great work. They do not have the aluminum drawers listed on their site. Contact Terry@rackman for quotes. I believe the 2U run around $144.
  8. Yes Bud, I know that, and I would love to make 695 rates. People tend to complain about the ASA contract as if its gospel. Just wanted to remind those that its a minimum. That's all.
  9. ASA is only a "minimum" rate. Doesn't mean you have to work for that. I've turned down plenty of work because they wanted a minimum rate. It's all in your negotiating power and how much they want your team. Negotiation is a powerful tool.
  10. Sorry for your loss, Jan. You're in our thoughts, through this difficult time. (null)
  11. Alex, I have two UCR411a's as receivers. One for Boom Op, and one for Utility. I'll add, that the only reason I started using the Sharkfin was that my dipoles didn't cover the 470 range that my private line T4 is on. I've discussed this with my guys and they are in agreement that the only time they have received loud "pops" has been when the short BNC antenna cable was not connected. Thought I would ask you if you've tried different cables?
  12. I found this one used. Seems like a steal! (null)
  13. Alex, I have the exact setup that you do, except for a UM400 for talkback. Custom padded belt, with custom pouches for the bits. My guys have never complained about loud pops. What antenna are you using for the T4? I found that the supplied whip antenna was not working well, since my T4 is buried the cart and struggled to push the signal out to my boom op. When I attached a Sharkfin to the T4, everything got ALOT better, and no issues, as you've described. Hope that helps.
  14. Keep the 442, Cujo. It's a great machine, and I still have mine after years of work. At one time I thought about selling my 302, and now it's apart of my cart. I now have a hard time selling anything I rarely use. Minus my Zaxcom TRX system, since it really was a specialty item. Congrats, again!
  15. Congrats to all nominated. All great sounding shows. Good luck, everyone.
  16. When I started I rarely worked with film. Working with film now for the past year, we rarely roll into high single digit take counts. It's a dream and a curse all in one. Fewer takes to get it right, although we all strive to nail it on the first take. And fewer "keep rolling, reset" calls gives the boom op some love. Surely don't miss the 15 take wide shots, or 15 minutes "takes" with 4 resets. I guess it spoke to me in that way.
  17. http://jamesriverfilm.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/the-true-cost-of-filmmaking-in-the-21st-century/ Interesting article about film vs digital filmmaking. Couldn't agree more. Good read. (null)
  18. Done! I have always told our Script Supervisors that they are honorary members of the Sound Department. They help us out more than any other department in my mind, relaying issues to directors that whip their Comteks off as soon as cut is mentioned.
  19. I apologize for the "shameless plug", but we worked hard at this design and being self deprecating and all, thought it fit well with the theme. This is a characterization of us, also. I really enjoy how my Boom Op(Robert Maxfield) is booming with his heart.
  20. My daughter loves going to the theater to see movies and so do I. I do agree that TV is doing a better job at providing interesting, relevant content. It will be a sad day if theaters close due to lack of content. I do only go and see movies in theaters that play better on the big screen. Not as much as I use to, since having children, but that is slowly changing as they get older. The theater experience is still a relevant factor, to me.
  21. Great time meeting everyone from out of town. Jan, Eric, RVD, Hunter, Senator, Colleen, Christina, Gordon, Jesse, David, Neal, Sonom. It was a pleasure talking shop and nonsense with you all. Thanks Whit for the great BBQ and organizing the weekend with Chris. Hope to do this again next year.
  22. Thanks everyone. It's a big hit on set. Kind of like a new car nobody has seen before. Lots of compliments and several people researching 8020 for their own carts. I'll post better photos of the details once it's finished.
  23. No, those are custom machined, and the wrong design. I submitted two designs, the one you see, and another, more machined, and elegant, and black! I wanted them to have options incase they couldn't do the more artful design. I paid for the more expensive, artful design and they sent these. Not sure why, but it's being corrected.
  24. Here's the back, with two lock boxes for boom gack, and personal items while working. (null)
