  1. THe older versions were really laking in the HF driver, the burgundy passives and teal colored actives. I agree that they are to be avoided. The newer ones with the funky parenthesis are quite different.
  2. I don't mind the ENG panning page so much. I got pretty fast at it, same for the trim knob deal. I wish the display was better in that page...but hey. It is pretty fast. The aspect of the routing that I dislike is there are no busses, other than R and L on the ENG screen. I would love to take the first fader, route an input to it (digital 2, analog 10, whatever) and then have all routing follow it, even zaxnet ID. Then, having a mix bus that can be routed to any output, be they mono or stereo or card track. Being able to route a stereo bus to mono send would be routing task that has to be done manually with cross points. It makes change needlessly complicated on our end. This shows the thinking is in the function of the machine, not the user's employment of the functions. A mix minus would show an even greater understanding of how we mixers often are asked to think. Then things are missing that I would like to see like swapping the headphones 1 and 2, delaying individual outs, grouping inputs, grouping outputs, hi shelf, lo shelf.
  3. Tannoy Reveal Active 501 or 601A for that price. The 601 might push $450 for a pair. But hey, put a sub on the 501s and you are in business. The "Truth" monitors, while they have a big tight low-end for the $, are just terrible in the all important 5K-12K. There is a harshness that just leaves me fatigued after a while. The low end Focals are so not like a real Focal I can't listen to them. The KRKs I would only recommend if you like listening at higher levels. That seems to be the only way they sound good and get over that "honkey" upper mid thing that they have. Or just take out a loan and get some Barefoots or ATCs. Your ears will love you, but your spouse won't.
  4. I have this one on set alot. It says "I Listen" in japanese.
  5. I totally want a Gonkulator. Pears would be the best sounding fruit.
  6. Full Compass will have better prices than Avid directly. Ask for Mr. Collier, he rocks.
  7. .1 would be cool. Like a push down clutch, that acts opposite of the way it does with like say, frequencies on the zaxnet page.
  8. I put all three grounds to the sleeve, using a three conductor. And run parallel on the single ring for the audio sends. A four conductor would bring nothing to the table, except a more cramped soldering experience, wouldn't it?
  9. 1- Timecode (Tip) 2- Mono Audio out to left (Ring) 3- Mono Audio Out to right (Ring) Maybe with the above right angle jack (thanks Vincent!) I could take 1 out and parallel it to the second out. But I couldn't do that with the Neutrik.
  10. Are there any other 1/8" right angle connectors besides the Neutrik ones? They are so slender I can't fit two skinny cables coming out of one, let alone the three I do for camera hop cables. I've been using the Canare for this as I can squeeze all three if I remove the spring strain relief.
  11. Is anything the end-all, be-all? But yeah, it takes more work to get a phase coherent picture going with spaced. That's where having a truck or somewhere other than headphones in a bag is so important to me. Starting with a 3:1 spacing ratio is the best way to start however. The classical guys love it when they see you bust our a tape measure. They don't know why you are doing it, but it makes it look like you care more. Then, using a pencil or a calculator will seal the deal.
  12. Coincident pairs would make little sense, but spaced, oh yeah! Omnis have a more linear off-axis response, and bass frequencies sound better all the way around. There are a lot of sonic compromises to get those directional patterns. A classical conductor client of mine insists on omni spaced pairs. And although I want to mock him in so many ways, his ears are amazing and he will let me know when something sounds "fake" as he calls it.
  13. This is the place for such discussions. Every board out there has a boisterous, useless commentator(s) that create unwanted noise. There is a filter for that. I welcome your query and am interested in other replies. Neumann, now owned by Sennheiser I believe, made the funky head guy way back in the 80s (or before?). Designed to mimic the listening experience when played back through headphones. But, people use them for other playback uses. I saw some NFL film guys running around with one on a boom pole at a game once. They must have found an interesting use for it. They are ungodly expensive. In the 10K neighborhood if memory serves. Obviously that is not what StefB is looking for. On that, the Schoeps would be my choice for your list. Especially with the different capsules you can get for them! I use my 414 stereo pair for many of those applications, but nature ambiences and the like are just not quite right for LDC mics. Having a CMIT myself, I want to hear some M/S recordings with the CCM8.
  14. Scene and take numbers can come from the Scripty if there is one. If no scripty, Director, DP or AC, AD or producer have fed me this information in the past. Then, if no direction is coming from any of them, I will often employ my own, very obvious naming scheme. For instance: I did a series of interviews one day. Each was their name, "Betty," "Margret," Etc. If I am manning the slate, yes, I match the names up. If not, I make sure the AC is. I do the folder name thing on the Nomad to get somewhat there. But the character limit, and the silly Mirror mode switching makes it cumbersome to do on the fly, and could lead to mistakes of not having stuff mirror correctly. I always have to take extra time before handing things to DIT. Sure, camera doesn't do this, but just because they don't, doesn't mean we shouldn't. Its like the old, "If your friends jumped off of a cliff would you?" kinda logic. Since poorly run sets are the new rule rather than the exception, I feel as though it is my opportunity to help the productions as much as possible. If they use plural eyes, it can merge the files, and then take on our file names. Now the editor has named files, merged inside their editing app. AWS_2-11.mov beats the crap out of 1AZZ67784.mov
  15. Awesome on the keyboard input Glenn. Thanks for listening to us! I can preemptively hear my little post friends giving thanks as well.
  16. Amen brother. Easiest way to stay afloat is to be nimble. The days of "build it and they will come" is over.
  17. I had a volume knob break on me just yesterday. This is a good move to toughen up these little useful guys.
  18. However, a credible mix is expected on the day in a "reality" type situation more often than not.
  19. All tech companies hate/love/respect/fear Apple right now in some way. Apple is kicking their ass)es. Nobody can make products as polished as they do. I would love it if my (deleted) product wouldn't cut me every time I plug something in. Apple would never that happen for a product at any price point. P.S. I took a dremmel to my (unnamed product) and in 10 minutes made it not dangerous to plug stuff in. Instead of hate and jealousy, I wish tech companies would learn. Post machine your products please.
  20. I cried the first time I flew some tracks into PT from an 827. The kick just vanished. This was an 888. Now, I marvel at the sound of RME converters. I cried louder when I made a splice from two reels of post BASF-Quategy tape and heard the difference. Paying 3X$ for reels of inconsistent crap. Heck, I was having more curl problems from bad cuts the last couple of years of tape was killing me. You think Kodak can still make 500 with consistent quality going through bankruptcy, shrinking market, and toughening environmental regulations?
  21. As a closet grammarian, I cringe often when reading this board. Some of the most outspoken & loudmouthed members of this group write like fools -even beyond their insipid remarks. The world would be a better place if these were written correctly: Their - They're - There To - Too - Two Lay - Lie Either/or - Neither/nor Since - Because Who - Whom Irony - Coincidence
  22. The trick with the apple store is to make an appointment online with a genious before you get in the car to go there. When booked, you will get a "genius" that, although I mock their job title viciously, they know their stuff. These are the guys who know the system, and I always feel like they are on my side and honest. The clipboard folk however, are just clerks with wildly varying skills. It's funny when they try to up sell you however. Like the guy who asked me if I needed consulting on my backup plan. I said, "Sure, that would be great. I have backup problems. I have an 8 station iSCSI setup with 100TB online, but I have another 300TB of data that I can't even fit online. How do I back all that up?" This is usually when people just lie and try to go through their scripts. But this guy was just like, "Wow, I've never dealt with iSCSI before. How well does it work?" And like that, I didn't hate the guy like I wanted to. Oh, also, don't pay cash. They haven't really figured that out yet.
  23. This Griffin one is the best I've found. But that whole wheel thing is a bit ugly I feel.
