  1. Billy- thanks for the info... I've considered getting one of the new Mini's for home use, rather than have to drag the Mini off of the cart, but I'm not rushing into spending more money right now. I plan on running the Traveler off of the cart's 12v power, through a PSC Powermax, rather than deal with FW power. I'm pretty sure I fried the FW interface by plugging it in wrong- that's one thing about the flimsy metal around the MOTU FW interface- easy to screw it up! The next thing I need to figure out is power for the Mac Mini... I guess that should be a new topic, though.
  2. While I was researching a solution for the Traveler I have I found this one for sale in Orland Park, IL:http://www.musicgoround.com/detail.aspx?id=983587 I emailed them about the "As Is" condition & received this response: "The Traveler is marked as is because we are unable to test firewire units fully in the store. It is marked significantly lower than typical used prices to reflect this. Basic functionality was tested, but we do not have a firewire equipped computer in the store. We would offer a DOA warranty on it if you're interested, meaning we would gladly take a return on it if you found that the firewire functions do not work, or if there are any other undisclosed problems with the unit. Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you." So... If anyone is looking for a used MOTU Traveler, and especially if you're close to Orland Park, you might want to take a look a theirs. (No relation to Music Go Round, etc... Just passing on a tip). John
  3. Um, dfisk: It's a "Star Wars" reference... You know- movies. Not real. No, really.
  4. Sounds like a good enough deal... BTW: Since this was purchased used, without the manual or original software, do you know if there is that much difference between the original & the newer MkIII- as far as basic functions? It looks like it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what I need to do, but it's always nice to have a manual. I'd pay the $20, if that's what MOTU asks for a reprint.
  5. Update- I contacted MOTU & the tech sent me the following notice: "I can issue a Return Authorization for you to send the Traveler back to us to be repaired. The cost of this service is $99.95 for any out-of-warranty interface." Sounds like a good idea... I'll post an update when I get the Traveler back from MOTU.
  6. Phil- thanks for the info. It looks like the problem is with the Traveler after all... I re-tested it with the XP laptop & there is no sign of the device on the system. I think the Firewire port on the Traveler has gone haywire. I guess I'll have to contact MOTU & see if it's worth repairing. I just can't figure out why it went bad sitting around! John
  7. I picked up a used MOTU Traveler (original, not MkIII) and a 2.26 gHz Mac Mini (OS 10.5. with the intention of using them with Boom Recorder... I tested the Traveler on my WinXP laptop, and it worked fine. I'm having problems getting the Traveler recognized on the Mini. I did a lot of research, and have done the following: 1) Tested the FireWire cable with an external FW drive (worked fine) 2) Reset the Traveler to factory settings (no luck) 3) Uninstalled & reinstalled the MOTU software (twice) Anyone have any experience with this problem?
  8. AO- too bad we can't find that one on this side of the pond! John
  9. I had the CK98 shotgun, but sold it when I picked up a Rode NTG-3... the biggest problem I had with the CK98 was the size- it was 14" long with the 300B preamp attached. I use the CK93 for most of my indoor dialog & have used it in quiet outdoor settings. I like the sound of the mic, the solid feel/build & especially like the price-to-performance ratio! John
  10. How about putting a "round file" (ie: trashcan) next to your cart & dump all of their detritus there... I've found that no amount of signs, cajoling, or begging works. That way they have to sift through the bin at the end of the day to find their stuff, rather than you.
  11. Not exactly on My radio, it's on BBC Radio 2 The Radcliffe & Maconie Show right now: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wr8d John
  12. I use the Stanley "FatMax 4-in-1 Mobile Work Station": Here's a couple of other posts regarding follow carts: http://jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=5776.0 http://jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=3386.0 John
  13. Sorry- but Corporations are NOT afraid of being sued... They are only temporarily afraid of not know how to manage current damage control sources (facebook, google, etc.). People, on the other hand, are quite afraid of being sued- mostly because they do not have the bank accounts that corporations (who are considered individuals/people) have. Law & Order to Freedom ration is questionable.
  14. I've been frustrated by spending much more time texting & re-texting info, when a short conversation would suffice... I've even tried calling a PA who was texting me (although she couldn't see me- I could see her) and she just let her phone go to voicemail without a second thought. It's not like she was busy, she just "never answers her phone"! John

  16. You might want to check out the Yahoo group Nature Recordists: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/naturerecordists/ They have a lot of very helpful folks there as well, and I've read posts relating to this subject. John
  17. One more question: Couldn't you install Snow Leopard over the server version? It looks like the Mini Server is identical to the Mini with an extra drive.
  18. Anyone else using the Mac Mini Server? I'm thinking of picking one up & want to make sure that it will work with something like the USB-based Tascam US-1641. TIA John
  19. I have to say- that is one ugly site... It's quite difficult to concentrate or find the necessary info on their products!
  20. Crew- you are the voice of reason/rationality/refreshment... I don't want to have to block any more posts... I've learned so much, and am in awe of so much, here. Jeff- thanks for having this forum available.
  21. Have you tried adding heat-shrink tubing to the cable? I've found that is a necessity with some smaller diameter cables. John
  22. Jim- I had worked hard at blocking all memories of those *#$&%@+ enlisted crapholes... thanks for nothing! ;-p
