    Zaxcom- MAXX

Hi Stefanosound, Email Zaxcom direct. They dont bite. 😊 The price may have changed since I got mine. The cost in my local currency has been volatile so the cost for me has changed by 10-15% in local currency. They can ship the board to you direct or to your countrys Zaxcom dealer to fit. If you are confident going inside the mixer and have taken precautions against static discharge its an easy install though no instructions come its pretty obvious.

  3. Not seen the rfexplorer before. Thanks for the link. I did a tour de france job where the huge amount of rf on site knocked all my mics off and even interfered with my cars remote alarm meaning i couldn t unlock properly to replace a dead battery on the camera. I got the door open and got a battery but the alarm would not stop making one hell of a racket. Battery replaced. Once the circus had moved on I could get back to work.
  4. Hi, I thought someone might have use for this. A small SDR and RTL2832 dongle combo for scanning frequencies if having problems with radio mics or RF interference. I use HDSDR but there are plenty of others around that are free including some basic spectrum analysers. The dongle connects via usb2 and antenna via sma. Inside the dongle the rtl chip can receive from 100khz to 2ghz (my version). Most do 50mhz up to 1.5ghz. Might be good for troubleshooting RF. GlennP

  6. Hi Jack, Are there any other how to Zaxcom PDFs? I fitted the AES and it seemed straight forward. I ve yet to test as I m waiting for the de15 and 45degree housing for the AES in outs. I googled the battery change and came up with a thread on jwsound about a Nomad but Derek H posted that it was near the CF slot for Maxx so I took a look. I m normally on my phone when I search as I m out filming (arent we all 😊) . Sometimes sites aren t optimized for mobile and its hard to comes across stuff but JW and FB are good for pics and tips. Really dig the internal battery fit for Rado Maxx project on FB. Hope the pics helped Prahad. Glenn (P)

    Zaxcom- MAXX

I negotiated a major discount with the seller who was at one point still insisting the unit had AES and 4 track record and holding out for the full price. I wanted all the upgrade costs, shipping fees, any workshop time and my replacement hire covered. I wanted any 'suprises' covered. The vendor had another unit to sell and got within $50 of my discounted price once he put the correct info in his advert. So I thought that my discount was fair. I now have the Maxx with AES board fitted and have upgraded the 2 tracks to 8 tracks and will replace the internal TC battery next week as the Maxx is 3 yrs old and I suspect its never been done. Seems to hold TC on power cycle though. Dealing with Zaxcom by email and Skype was all good. No issues. Parts arrived into UK very quickly once the order was set into process. Fitted 2 days later. All seem to be working OK. Was going to test AES into a clients PMW Xdcam camera today but I havent had a chance to solder the cables. Thanks also for the help and advice from jwsound forum users.
  8. Ha! 😁😁😁😁 I googled maxx battery change. Couldn t find anything. I have a pics of an AES board install but I bet there s a pdf somewhere. 😆 (I might need Zaxcom permission to post that). Glenn
  9. Hey, Just thought I might post a couple of pics on how to replace the internal 'watch type' battery in the Maxx. Left panel screws off and nut retaining the bnc. Screws are the same size. Battery just under the cf card tray. Replace and reassemble.
  10. Hi, There a quite a few guys on here using the F8 on eng/doco gigs. The production co I occasionally work for used one on a recent production. Prevoiously they used a freelancer with Zaxom or SD633. The recorder seemed fine (iso audio ok) but they had some problems with operator error and TC issues.😆 Check out the facebook f8 group. Useful stuff there. Look, the zoom is very very low cost purchase. Its not got the cachet of Zax or SD but it s a lot for less. I ve bought 10s of thousands of dollars of kit off Ebay in the past 5 years. I ve had luck.....good and bad. Latest buy has been a bit of a nightmare so it's a bit of a lottery. I use the Senny G2/G3 on camera gigs that I do in the UK. They are fine for that and for camera hops. Rodelink I never used so can t comment. My Microns sound better than the Sennys though. I use them on better paid jobs. I m no expert by any means but thats my 2c worth.

    Maxx TC

Hi Phillip and Derek, Yeah I know the phone isn t a great source of TC ☺. It was just an easy test since I ve got it with me always. Its convenient for syncing a couple of cameras for a 2 cam interview shoot. I can set up the cams light and then give each cam a squirt of TC without having to run cables or move the setup. I can view the b cam shot via wifi on the phone. It also makes calls. 😊 I would have liked to test the Maxx against an Ambient or Deneke with a comparator but the rental facilities near me dont really do sound. It was a quick and dirty test and thanks for the words of reassurance from you guys. Still trying to work out a deal with the Maxx. Best, Glenn

$395 for multitrack and $395 for AES but I ve now been told that the AES needs a board which contradicts the earlier info supplied. $1195 for TX option. Maxx going back to vendor. Thanks for your help guys.

    Maxx TC

Hey, Any guys who have the Zax Maxx notice a discrepancy between source TC and the Maxx reader/generators on screen when jamming continuously to the source? Let me just issue a quick disclaimer. I have only just bought the Maxx (used ) and I am checking it over while waiting on some info about codes from Zaxcom so not an expert on the Maxx by any means. I was testing the input / output TC to jam a slave device and and jam the Maxx also. When continuously jamming the Maxx with a Sony PMW350 I was getting a 1 frame difference in TC on screen ( 25Fps non drop obviously) whilst connected by bnc. This is when photographed. Not checked the flies although the TC is just in the header data right? I tried another source in to the Maxx, a smartphone LTC TC generator ( not exactly bench test gear I know) just to see if a change of input device may any difference... it did now its 8 frames out on the Maxx display wired continously. This may have something to do with the quality of the sync signal , how clean the edges are, transition times and level etc. But I think the Sony should be putting out a fairly clean TC signal. It may well be that either is just on the cusp of incrementing to the next frame and so the display difference is less than 1 frame? Is this just a display issue? I was not recording during the tests. This is probably something I m missing in a menu but it s best to check.

I contacted the vendor about the issues. Don t know about the rest of the world but in the UK we are covered by internet trading laws. If the item isnt exactly as described or there are omissions in the description then you are allowed to return and get your money back. They were still insisting it has AES and 4 trk recording which it doesnt but are being resonable about a discount or a return. Zazcom however haven t replied to a request for codes. Zaxcom initially were super A quick with their response and I was very impressed but I ve been passed on to another department who have not replied after 3 days. Good job I m not on set and need extra features in a rush 😉. So as far as the codes I m on a 'to do' list on someones mailbox. Phillip I definately take your comments onboard. I have not had the chance to test the rest of the Maxx fully. If the vendor was unsure about other things then what else is wrong..... I missed out on the 633 as it was snapped up while I was messing about sorting this.

The Maxx was advertised as having the AES by the vendor. It doesn t have that onboard as far as I can tell. The AES appears in the vFader page but none of the outputs appear on the routing. I can see the AES on the bus menu inputs but then there are no outs to either card tracks or bus outs. I asked the vendor if any options fitted ie TX but they said no. They were not upfront about the 2 track record or missing AES given the Maxx came with 8trk and AES as standard for the past 3 years.

    Zaxcom- MAXX

I've been told by Zaxcom that 8trk and AES are both code upgrades for my Maxx2. I 'm waiting for costs. The TX option is a hardware install and a trip to the UK dealer. Didn't expect such a speedy response especially at the weekend so fair play to the Zaxcom guys. Waiting on UK dealer response now which will be during business hours. The price of the upgrades might be cost prohibitive for me though. I read that on one of the French sound forums the price was 300-400Euro for each code. So potentially an extra 800Euro. We will see. I was offered a 633 or the Maxx for a similar price (both used). I chose the Maxx for the extra mic channel input and the ability to use the menu knob as a fader (Vfader) as well as never clip. The 633 has 10trks and flexible power options plus the 2 card record as it stands without options or upgrades necessary. Though I might be complaining about not having that extra mic channel I do already have a 302 which would go with the 633. The cost of the codes might put the Maxx total price way above the used 633 which would be a shame as I'm starting to like the Maxx. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Zaxcom- MAXX

I sent Zaxcom an email via their contacts page. Probably do need an upgrade code. I m sure I read on the variuos forums that the Maxx went to 6ch Rec and AES as standard from Sept 2013 but I might have misunderstood the posts but when I looked at the latest manual the Maxx had full ISO record and AES just not the TX or Zaxnet. Some Zaxnet is there on 2.30 but I believe the TX is a board install. I posted as Zaxcom is probably closed weekends. Thought I might get a head start before work comes in...

    Zaxcom- MAXX

Hi Rado, Have attached some pictures. The AES is not installed as far as I know but the AES v faders appear and can be set up via the PFL buttons. The input 5 and 6 appear and I have set up with vFader but not tested as I haven t made a TA5 F up yet. The unit is a Maxx2 with a serial number 1003# . Pics of the card screens attached. Very slowly getting to know its way of working. More pics Last one

    Zaxcom- MAXX

Hi, I just picked up a Zaxcom Maxx. It's possibly a very early version and is listed as a Maxx2 on the About Maxx menu page. I have v2.30 loaded and its showing AES and 6 inputs but only displaying 2 card outputs in the menu. As far as I know it is capable of 6 ISOs and a Stereo Mix but those card tracks are not there in the menu. Anyone know if this needs a hardware upgrade for the extra card tracks or can I upgrade another way or am I being a dummy and missing something in the menu??? Only got the unit powered up this afternoon so forgive me if I am asking a silly question and yes I am Reading TFM. Glenn
  22. Thanks for the replies and advice. I did touch the brass post with bare fingers but the mic was already bad at that stage. Obviously I ll use latex gloves next time. I ll try AKG UK to see if they have the element in stock somewhere. I have the CK93 and CK91 capsules on another mic and wanted a cardioid stereo pair. Got a refund for the capsule from the seller. So I have 2x SE300b pre amps and the ck93 and ck91. I actually was after a ck94 figure 8 for MS recording with my 416 although I feel I may well be disappointed by the noise/output of the AKG in combination with the Sennheiser.
  23. Stripdown of an AKG CK91 Blueline cardiod capsule. I bought tge CK91 and SE300b off ebay for a good price but in receiving it the output was very low and with little or no HF in the signal. It was also very susceptible to pops and breaths. The capsule seemed to charge up giving reasonable output but then fading away. Not much inside the thing. Thought I d post just for interest. I quite like the blueline series but low output and self noise very apparent. Prefered to the Oktava Mk 012 I also have but even that seems like a 'hot' mic compared with the AKG. The membrane part is not taught and has some ripples in the surface. Possible cause of issues. I ve not tested the pcb yet but will do when time allows.
