  1. I was just watching the interview of the sound post team and Michael Minkler says that Quentin Tarantino is one of those directors that will reshoot,relight and reblock a scene if there's a sound problem to get good sound! If there's something that disturbs the sound man on the set he will reajust it. It's great to work with directors that understand the importance of recording a good sound on set. There's another scene and it's the dinner scene where C.Waltz - Nazi Col. Landa, eats with M. Laurent as Shosanna and there's an annoying but a beautifully used, high frequency tone as the one generated by lights.
  2. There's a thread here that suggests the Sonotrim as a good mic for noisy locations. What are your thoughts about this mic? Best regards, Marco
  3. In a previous project, there was an interior car scene(a 60's BMW) and since I had the script earlier, I asked how they would do that. ( car on a platform, windows up/down etc...). When they proposed to me to be in the small trunk of the car I laughed ( it actually sounded pretty funny) and refused. We managed to shoot it with me inside the car and not in the trunk. Now, if the shot is inside a bigger car and see that is safe for me to be there, should I think about it? Best regards, Marco

  8. What about the 4080 cardioid mic? Does anybody had any experience with this mic in film and trying to cover it under the cloth? How does it work in that situation? Best regards. Marco
  9. IMO Sanken works better in exterior than the B6. As many said it depends on the situation and it's always fun to nail it with out any clothing. In a project I worked on, there was an interior shot and the character was the sphinx. No clothes, only attached wings! So I used the B6 at her hairline attached with a bobby-pinned as Jason said(I had to readjust it too between the takes). It worked perfect. Even on the close ups you can't see the mic. I did a documentary that the main character was a chef. He was wearing the typical chef jacket ( http://www.chefwear.com/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=64&DEPARTMENT_ID=5& ). For that I hide the B6 beneath the upper button and it worked fine. For suits I hide it on the knob - tie. I was talking to an experienced mixer and told me that during pre you can ask the wardrobe for ties made with the thin cloth so you can place the mic beneath the tie. On the wide shots you can place the mic on the upper side of the tie. The camera most probably won't see it. I'm eager to use the ear technique and hear how it sounds. Best regards, Marco
  10. You did ok. Under pressure you need to do the job, but you need to be very careful, cause during pressure moments and stress, something insignificant could trigger a misunderstanding and you don't want to be the center of the conflict. I don't either hide the lavalier under the bra i prefer to fix it on beneath the blouse, next to the last open button.To do that I make sure that my breath is ok and then i ask the talent to pass the lav. Then I tell her/him that I'm placing the Tx and then I thank them.
  11. Yes you can do that! You can add your own samples to speakerphone.
  12. Speakerphone and also Altiverb are two very powerfull tools. I got them both and I got to say that they sound amazing!
  13. You're absolutely right, but I can't do either. There's no one here that has those mics or a shop that sells them. Could I ask, if any of you guys could upload a small sample of any of those mics just to take an idea of how they sound? Best regards, Marco
  14. I don't mind spending 300 or 400 dollars, but I can't afford paying for let's say the neumann GFM 132 or the shoeps. How come the hemisphere ones work better than the cardioid ones? Thanks, Marco
  15. It's definitely for dialog and I'm going to use it for car shots. For car shots I know that is better to use a cardioid or a hyper-cardioid. But if I have an interior wide shot with no major action? Let's say sitting. Should I also use the ones that I mentioned previously? Or if use a hemispherical I'll have the perspective of the shot?   16. Hey there, Happy New Year! I'm into researching some boundary mics in order to extend my possibilities on set. I've checked the price and specifications of Crown's PZM 30-D, Audio Technica U841A, Sennheiser E912, AKG C542BL, AKG C547BL and Sanken CUB-01. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to have them in my hands and listen to them, so i'm taking my decision based on their specs and of course on your valuable opinions. According to your experience which should I buy? I'm thinking of purchasing a cardioid or hyper and one with a more wide pattern. Best regards, Marco
  17. It's a playback. I read an article about it that says that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon had to go to the Burnett's Electromagnetic studio several weeks before the production started in order to rehearse before going to Nashville to record. It's actually pretty interesting what they did there, cause they used vintage equipment as consoles, mics, premics and comps in order to capture the analogue sound. Then the music was recorder on a Studer 24 tracks. That was transfered in Pro Tools at 96Khz, and also an LCR stem was made. Now, whats more interesting is what they did after that. They actually used a self-powered Mackie P.A, a Pro Tools rig, that played-back the split LCR music through the PA system in different spaces and captured it with a pair of neumanns. They recorded that both on analog and digital. So, that was done in parking garage, scoring and dubbing stages of Fox. In some cases with the mics behind the close doors. Some other stuff was recorded in the alley while the playback system was in Fox's scoring stage. And all this process was done in order to capture some real delays slaps and EQ, cause in the digital reverbs felt too fake. Also to capture the feeling of the music as you are in backstage, or in front. For crowds they used production sound, ADR and library.
  18. Were they playback? It's done really good. You can hear and feel that the band is playing live. I really enjoyed that movie!! One scene pops up in my mind. The group singing Tiny Dancer in the bus. Great scene!

  22. Hi, A year ago I was in a project in which in a particular scene there was a gunshot. I ask to do the rehearsal with out the gunshot, so I set up my levels(boom and lav), mind the bg noise and always keeping an eye on the actor's finger on the trigger. You never know if the gun fires up by mistake or due to a really bad, bad joke. During the shooting I kept my phones level at zero watching the meters. I recorded the rehearsals, takes and wild. So I was covered. Sdgrothe what you mention with the car radio level is what I always do. I use a low level especially in the night. Sometimes when I'm on the highway coming back home after a shooting I turn the radio off cause what I hear the most is the car noises(engine, wheels on asfalt). Jeff, I would love to see the Who.   23. Hi, Marc your experiment is interesting. I was thinking that we actually have for some hours during the day 2 small speakers in less than an inch away from our eardrums using a -20dbfs as a reference tone without knowing the SPL.
