  1. I find regardless of what new lav mounting toy you use it still comes down to good placement, whether youre using a mount or a piece of moleskin... Im a fan of the hide a mic bra holder for documentary work, where subjects arent used to micing themselves. The bra holder simplifies the process for sure.
  2. +1 Ive only sent a 2ch mix when the operator has rented an A box. I recently worked with a red module that had XLR inputs, mic/line switches, and trims on it. Didnt even have to go in the menu!
  3. Nice. Also less of a target for theft. Most of my travel is pretty tame (around north america), but I would definitely ditch the pelicans in situations theyd stick out too much.
  4. Are most of the frequent flyers here using a pelican 1650 as their check in? What other check in bags are your choice to travel with? I currently use a 1535 and a backpack, but have been thinking about getting a bigger bag to check in so im not so tight for space.
  5. Unfortunately I didnt make a recording!
  6. Constantin, I believe Ive read of this issue before w/ C pre amp and lectro TXs. We have a mixer in town that uses the 4017c with a smqv and a small ambient 48v power supply on the pole for this reason. I ended up going with the B pre amp, as it works with my current zeppelin and other shockmounts, but I am interested in picking up the C so I can use a Cosi and get the kit even smaller. RFI issues with the Tacit cable doesnt sound promising. I A/B'd the 4017B with my MKH50 again yesterday, and this may be funny but I think what I perceived as 'noise floor' of the 4017B mic may have been the flatter frequency response I wasnt used to. I noticed I could hear the noise of the 50 in the mid/highs and it was less pronounced in the lows, but the 4017 I could hear it more flat through the whole spectrum. I was listening to the BG in my kitchen, and when I took my headphones off the 4017B sounded the same as what my ears were hearing. The 50 not so much. By no means a scientific test, but it was interesting listening for the nuances of the mics.
  7. This is true, could be my recorder or headphone amp perhaps. Been using it with a mix pre 6 and 633 the past week. And will take a listen back to some of the recordings. With no low cut on the 4017C, how have you found it for handling noise? Im thinking of trying the C pre amp before I go with the B.
  8. Thats right Chris. I havent compared it to a cmit so I dont have that point of reference. I know there alot of 4017B users out there that are happy campers, I just wasnt used to the minimal self noise in comparison to my 50.
  9. Thought I'd revive this thread as I've been trying out a 4017B this week. Been loving the sound, weight (or lack of), reach, and the lack of off axis coloration for the documentary work I do. I also like its ability to smoothly transition from exteriors to interiors for run and gun when I dont have time to switch mics. Compared to my MKH50 I have noticed the 4017B requires about 10db more gain at the mixer, and as Brian mentioned I haven't noticed it much in practical locations with normal BG noise. I have noticed a bit more of a noise floor with the mic in quieter locations though. Perhaps it is negligible but I thought I'd see if others have heard this with their 4017.
  10. Exactly. I had the same revelation when I started using it as well. No fatigue at the end of a day, its become my go to mixer for doc work. I look forward to seeing what other compact mixers pop up in the future.
  11. Nice. Is the air quality affected from the fires around LA? We had smoke around Vancouver all summer from the fires up north.
  12. Ive only used the advance gain settings. I prefer to be able to adjust the fader to record a hotter mix track than my ISOs, or have more control over whats being sent to camera if thats happening. Over time I have developed good references of what trim levels to start at for different situations and adjust when necessary.
  13. Thats a lot of fur. Whats inside the zeppelins?
  14. I havent used this feature on the mp6, but the Q take function is supposed to mark cues in your file. I think this function is more for the music crowd but could be useful in your case. Was on a doc with the mix pre 6 and I'd just eyeball the tc and put that into the sound report writer app with notes when necessary. I think there has been an update with the sound report writer app where it can read tc from tentacle boxes. Worth looking into!
  15. I hear ya. I was doored on my bike 3 years ago and that has motivated me to make things as ergonomically friendly when possible. The mix pre 3/6 only have a 3.5mm stereo out. I only use this rig when sending a wireless hop to camera.
  16. Dont think you can get smaller than that!
  17. Id give a reccomendation for the mix pre 6. I bought one earlier this year to build a lightweight bag, and have found myself leaving the 633 in the pelican as backup when the extra tracks/outputs/auto mix aren't required. I've taken it out with no issues on many documentaries, and the weight savings have been significant especially for run and gun/travel gigs. The 2.21 firmware had a few nice updates for MS monitoring/decoding and its come handy on VR shoots as well. Heres a photo of the rig inside a Jansport fanny pack. If you do go this route I'd make up some low profile cables to save even more space in the bag.
  18. Those Wisy's look interesting! Another happy G3 user here for hops. I find them to be perfect for reference audio to camera or for playback. The G3 output can be pushed to feed a line level input like the Alexa but I find it brings up the noise floor in the receiver. Most of my clients go double system so this isn't an issue. I also have a Srb5p for talent that can be repurposed for hops but this rarely comes out... I looked long and hard at the lectro LRs but I heard the battery life was not that amazing with rechargeables. Another plus for the sennys is that while they're not wideband they do have a wider tuning range which adds more flexibility.
  19. I picked one up and have been happy with it. Creating that space around the mic can be acheived with a more modest means of snot tape and moleskin (or whatever floats your boat), but I always like to have a variety of bits kicking around the wiring kit. I'd recommend it.
  20. At a glance, the triangular shape of the unit makes me feel like it would be a bit awkward to rig onto a camera tripod.
  21. Yea, in addition to HVAC I've worked some corporates where they have a white noise generator blasting in all the rooms of the building. Huge difference when we turned it off. Apparently its for the employees to be less distracted with other conversations/BG noise etc...
  22. For sure. I'm not doubting the link to the 7506s, I just find the situation interesting. Counterfit items, vendors paying people for fake reviews, and finding other creative ways for their products to show up in our feeds. Definitely more caution is required regarding who the seller is in today's Amazon...
  23. While were on the topic of Amazon, I just heard a great podcast about their leniency with 3rd party vendors. Has definitely made me more weary of Amazon related purchases. In the past overseas manufacturers had to go through US resellers, but as of 18 months ago they can sell direct on Amazon from their warehouses. Worth a listen! https://www.gimletmedia.com/reply-all/124
  24. Im also a fan of SRW, use it for my reports when Im doing documentary on the mix pre 6, otherwise its wingman. As for the leading zeros, Ive never thought of that as an issue. Its easy enough for an editor to understand that "T1" on your report corresponds to take "001" on your recorder. You can remove the Timecode field by going into settings, and customize the report with 'edit pdf fields'. Ive always liked the simplicity of the app.
  25. I was looking into this alot as well for recording in louder environments. From what I gather IEMs will provide you with the most isolation... The new HN 7506s feel pretty comfy too I must say. I ended up settling on a pair of Sennheiser 280s, very affordable and they offer alot more isolation than your average pair of cans. I found them to be a nice middle ground in getting more isolation but not having to invest $4-700 in those mentioned above. Have been monitoring at way lower levels when I use them which is nice. For extensive rain I usually put my hood up over some old 7506s, but I'd imagine IEMs would be helpful for this as you could wear a rain hat/hood with no inconvenience.
