  1. If you look at the response of Sound Devices about the lack of AES inputs and the release of the XL-AES accesory, I think we can be confident, they do listen to their customers. If you remember, the Dungan automix was first introduced on the 688 and after a while only on the 633 too. The CL-16 was just announced and is not available yet. This kind of equipment is made to last, we are not in the smartphone business, and investment in our tools is a long term decision. So, we should be patient and see what will really come.
  2. This slot form factor was originaly designed to fit big Broadcast cameras, but one can see that nowadays, most of productions use a lot of different cameras, from the small A7s to Arri's or Red and less ans less Betacam style cameras. Today, almost every sound recordist, from news to high profile features uses small receivers as camera hops. This form factor is inherited from the past and I can understand the need for backward compatibility, but I hope that new products in the future will be more oriented to the sound persons than just "slot compatible". As sound ops, we need higher channel count, at least 4, without compromise on quality, without the need to cables and distros, with a large and clear display, not especially integrated in the mixer/recorder, but definitly more sound oriented. Zaxcom made it, others can and should.
  3. Sound Devices announce their “Cantaress” for 888 and Scorpio https://www.sounddevices.com/cl-16-faq/ Plenty of options now with the support of CL-12 and third parties controllers.
  4. I currently use the DNS2 for live transmissions in Davos where we have to work in a very noisy environment. I use it on interviews with 3 to 4 people splitting the anchor and the guests. 3 to 6 dB attenuation works well on ventilation and general background. But had weird results today while Trump’s helicopters were passing by. Such low end rumble was giving awful monkey noises.
  5. I have to confess I never used the Invisitys so I couldn’t answer. But as far as I know the Rogers, I have to say it’s working better than expected. The level is not bad and the transmission is reliable in a range of about 25 meters indoor.
  6. Hi I have experienced 3 Phonak Roger on three different transmitters simultaneously and it work flawlessly. You just have to turn on and synchronise each earpiece separately. I couldn’t confirm for 6 but definitely 3 work without a hiccup. H
  7. Salut Fred, I bought it directly from the European distributor in The Netherlands: Burg.J.G.Legroweg 96 9761 TD Eelde The Netherlands Phone: +31 (0) 651 014 014 Email: info@nanukcase.eu
  8. The 664 being an analog design, it’s certainly for that reason they keep it on their catalog. H
  9. it’s mainly the latch system that I find very clever and easier to use. The wheels, the telescopic handle (placed outside) and the compartments in the cover and the general build quality are really good too. I also own and use several Peli´s and they’re certainly not bad, the differences are quite small, but in the end, I have a subjective preference for the Nanuk.
  10. Hi Fred check the Nanuk 935, I own one and prefer it over the Peli. https://www.nanuk.com/nanuk-935.php Henri
  11. I use these 250 mm sma to sma cable between the receivers and the PSC https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-1337812-1.html Between the PSC and the antennas, I use RG58 but not more than 10 meters. If I need longer, I'll use Sommer RG-213
  12. Great job Matthias ! Congrats. I found the german voices really clear and detailed. I can not wait to read your comments on the way you worked for this series and the challenges you faced.
  13. Hi Carlos, I havn't made AB testing of Sennheiser RX vs MPR52 in Evo mode, but to my ears, the sound was ok, without any hiss, artifacts or pumping. Unfortunately I can not make such a comparative test now as I am on vacation, but I could try when I'm back. What is sure, is that using the wrong compander gives absolutely unusable results.
  14. The main advantage of omni and wide-cardioid is the absence of proximity effect. One think first to the accentuation of low freq when the microhone is placed close to the source, but at the contrary, the main problem with pressure gradient microphones is the lack of low end when placed far from the source. Thus, using omnis for ambiance or classical music is a real advantage for the rich low end. Also, spaced microphones give really nice sense of depth and envelopment, really nice for ambiances. Here is what one can read on Schoeps’s website about wide cardioids: - extremely consistent polar response leads to a very natural sound - combines the advantages of the omni (warm sound) and the cardioid (directivity) - popular as a main microphone pair e.g. at a spacing of 30 cm, angle +/- 45°
  15. The problem with your setup is that the Wisycom receiver can emulate the HDX modulation of the Evo systems, but not the transmitters. Your only options are Enc or Enr. Thus the IFB receivers will not be compatible. You should indeed use Sennheiser transmitters with the MCR52. regarding the sound quality, I recently used a MCR52 un EVO mode with a G3 and I didn’t noticed any artifacts or problem.

    wisycom

I had a direct confirmation from someone on Wisycom’s booth at the last IBC, that they are working on a 4 channels full diversity receiver. No release planned yet at that time

    wisycom

Just to be complete, I have used the EVO emulation with a G3 and this is working really well. So I assume it is working well with the 5212 too. I know a rental company who have replaced all their rack receivers by Wisycom’s but they kept their Sennheiser 5212 and Shure handheld so they can adapt to their clients needs.

    wisycom

Hi I use both MCR42 and 52. Great receivers, especially the 52 when I need to send 2 channels to a small camera rig. The receiver is as small as a Sennheiser G4, but with much more flexibility and quality. The only thing to know is that the frequencies of both channels must be close to each other. Only the 42 is a full diversity (4 complete receivers for 2 channels operation). Finally, with the ability to emulate companders of other brands, you can easily use a Wisy receiver with Sennheiser Hidyn or HDX, Audio Limiter analog, or Shure and this is a very clever solution. As transmitters, I have the 40’s but found them a bit bulky.
  19. Hi Björn, I’ve worked with both brands and was impressed by the preamp quality of the Sonosax. Coming from SD, it took me some time to be familiar with the menus, but after a few hours it’s really well thought, and the touchscreen is really easy to manipulate as you boom at the same time. Other advantages, the 8 AES inputs with the RC8+, so you have full control on 14 channels and power distribution on such a small and lightweight combo. On the other hand, you just record on SD cards, no SSD inside like the SX62 or the 888, and there are, in my opinion, not enough outputs to feed cameras, IFB’s and so on. Finally, you don’t have limiters on inputs, so you’ll keep your ISO’s low, and Dungan is not onboard. Not an easy choice .... if I had the money, I would buy both... Henri

    New SD 833

And with the channel groups you can actually link more than 2 inputs.

    New SD 833

I’m afraid the 833 is seated between two chairs. Too compact for cart jobs and too hungry for bag. The 888 seems more relevant for cart with many inputs and outputs. I wish SD would have announced both models at the same time, my choice would have be different. Today I still use the 633 for bag jobs when I need just a boom and some Wisy’s, especially if I need to fly, and I use the 833 for more confortable gigs when power is not an issue.
  22. I have worked for many years with the Sony’s. Since Sennheiser launched the HD26 Pro, I use these and find that what I hear on location translates well in post. But as many of you said, it’s more the way that you interpreted what you hear that counts. Had no chance to try the new Neumann headphones yet. If it’s like their studio monitors, this must be great. Anyone of you gave them a try ?
  23. Here are two pictures. The setup is an MS pair of Schoeps and a Wisycom MCR 42 on channels 1 and 2 in AES3, the 833 is recording. As one can see on the second picture, the consumption is around 14 Watts, so the battery should last more or less 6 hours which is fairly OK. Regarding the heat, I trust SD engineers, they know what they do and they certainly know that this recorder will be mainly used in a bag surrounded by a lot of stuff. I'll keep vigilant but not worried.
