  1. I believe you input the timecode through the Aux/Mic In 3.5mm input. The MixPre 6i doesn't have a generator but I think the Mixpre-6ii does. So, you would need to leave a timecode box attached to the first generation. This is how I recall it being but I could be wrong.

Hi guys, I know this is several years later, but there is a very convenient and cheap way of getting audio into the Alexa classic or Alexa plus and you probably have mostly everything already (maybe not the 5 pin to 3 pin xlr but I got mine for like $40).

First off i'm not discounting any of the professional responses so far.  I think Joe was simply wanting scratch audio, just like myself...so anyway....if you have any external recorder Zoom, Tascam etc. that has a line out you should be good to go.

1)Zoom H1n or any other recorder with a line out (most have the 3.5mm out)

    2) 5 pin to 3 pin XLR cable ( I believe you have to do a thorough research for this as not all cables are equal)

    3) 3.5mm to 3 pin XLR Male which connects to the cable described in No.2

That's it.  I just did a test and it works absolutely fine.  I have a few recorders and tried them out on all...from the Mix Pre3 (too bulky for my taste), right down to the Zoom H1n  I also have a tiny Sony IC recorder which i'm gonna also try.  The smaller the better for me, so I plan to get a Velcro strap to mount it to my rig.

Remember guys most of these consumer/prosumer external recorders have some type of pre-amp (even it they aren't great) and you're basically just sending that signal to the line out of those recorders then into the Alexa.

If anyone wants any pics to my setup just let me know...cheers.

Hope this helps newbies to Alexa

Would this cable work for this?

  3. Hey Everyone,

A month or so ago, Mark Farag (another member of the forum) and I launched a podcast called Skeleton Crew. It features conversations with key crew members that would be present on most film sets. Episode 3 features Rachel Cameron, an esteemed member of this forum as well, discussing the role of sound mixer. We had a great time chatting with her and thought some of you would enjoy it as well.

The whole first season (6 episodes) is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and most other fine podcast apps.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to not put the mic right in front of the speaker's mouth.   Angle it down at their mouth from above, with the mic in front of their forehead, or angle it in from the side--get it out of the "blast path".  Then you can use almost any windscreen.

Does this hold true for side address microphones as well? I have just started dabbling in podcast recording and am currently using some Marantz MPM-2000's. They come with a little pop filter but I think it could use something more substantial. Perhaps I could be positioning them better as well.

I liked the grommet idea.  Found this at Ace, part #405942-M.  I.D. 5/16".  Gives you a nice big diameter and still allows push to select.IMG_2663.jpgIMG_2652.jpg

Do you happen to have a link to this part? Or do you know what the part is actually for or what it is called? I went to an Ace and have looked online but can't find it. Looks like a good solution though!

Thats correct. If you choose to embed timecode as metadata then it will work like any other production sound recorder on the market, and the editor can sync it up just like normal in his/her NLE.

If you choose to record LTC as audio, you will have to have another piece of software that converts audio LTC to timecode metadata first, like the Tentacle Sync software does.

That's great to know. Thanks Mike!

You can set the MIxPre to do either one.

If you set the "aux in" mode to timecode, then it will read the incoming LTC and embed it as metadata. However if you setthe aux in to line input, it will just read the LTC as an audio signal and you can route it to any track to record to.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

So you would only need to use Tentacle's proprietary syncing software if you choose the LTC option, correct? And with the embedded metadata option, an editor could sync it with most any NLE (I know that Premiere and some others don't work with LTC)?

Hi all, reference the comment about aging 641. I was in one of the shops they had a brand new 641 and I used 641, I tried out and recorded both. Whoa, what a huge difference. The older one had definitely, I guess we could say, aged. It had $0 value to me and was priced about 75% of a new one. So, obviously I agree with the aging comment.

    Thank you, Martin

A bit off topic, but what would cause the degradation in quality over time? Would it be related to the mic capsule or the amplifier? I'm curious now because I use a CMC4 (modded to P48) with an MK41. I think it sounds good but maybe it could be even better. I haven't compared it to a newer one.

  9. Does anyone have any advice or information on the best way to clean the connections on a Schoeps CMC 4/5/6 and the capsules (MK41 specifically)? I have a CMC4 that was modded by Pete Verrando to P48, so apparently Schoeps won't clean/service it. I had an issue with humidity when using it a couple months back and I have read that it may be because there is some dirt or debris on the connection. I am going to be putting a Cut 1 filter in place so I'd like to get the connections all cleaned up and then leave it screwed together to protect against further humidity issues.

Update: I found this short piece from Redding Audio: http://www.reddingaudio.com/downloads/Schoeps Technical/Schoeps Basic Care Mics - Hmty.pdf

Anyone have any experience cleaning these? I might look into getting a Vark dry tube as well.

At the end of the day the recorder usually isn't the limiting factor in your signal chain, or if it is then you should have the budget to pick the right tool for the job.

See, I’ve thought this and I know it’s correct, though I worked with a mixer and have seen a lot of online commenters who say otherwise. I agree with you but I’m just evaluating my options.

No matter what the online commentators have to say, I would rather have a 416 into a Zoom F4 than an ME66 into a Cantar X3.

Distributed films included "Flowers for Fannie", "The Good Book" and "Providence", which got a limited AMC theater release. Former films were faith based, but the current one is a Vietnam war era drama. We will release it Veterans Day 2018, with the goal being a wide theater release.
