  1. Just saw Michael Mann's "Ferrari...I don't know if Angelo Bonanni or Lee Orloff (the location sound mixers) hang out here, but their work was masterful.  The dialogue, room sounds, clicks and creaks...everything...was natural, clear, nuanced, and the mixing choices really added to the drama.  A masterclass.

  3. Hello all - will be covering an athlete in women's soccer for a practice, they want a lav mic on her.  Transmitter is a Lectro SSM.

    • I've got an array of waist, ankle and thigh straps, and small pouches.
    • I'm most interested in the best transmitter placement option that will interfere the least with her ability to do her job on the pitch.
    • The thigh and ankle are out of the question.
    • I'm assuming I'll be running into a sports bra on the torso.
    • I have silicon covers for the SSM to help protect from sweat
    • I see the Ursa backstrap (URSA Backstrap - Trew Audio) , but I'm skeptical on how comfortable that is wrapping under the armpit for an athlete.

    Thoughts and suggestions?  Thanks!

  4. Help me hive-mind... More and more, I'm hearing young directors and DoPs using the term "money-shot" for their favourite take.

Now, my old man old school brain seizes every time, as I have always associated that exclusively with adult film production, and I'm thinking every time that other's on set must be feeling uncomfortable (or not?)

I know words and phrases evolve over time... But did I miss the 2023 memo on this, or is still a phrase associated with adult film?  There's still no way I'll use it on set, but should I just chill because I'm the only one who notices?

    Hello,

we'll be happy to look into this. Can you let me know what firmware versions your DSR4 is on, and the 888 also? There have been a number of updates since the initial release of compatibility between the systems so let's start there.

    -Karl

    DSR4 fw v1.14....888 fw 9.31   Thanks!

  6. Hello - I'm struggling with a minor issue.

    • Setup is DSR4 into a SL2/888
    • Transmitter is single block 19 UH400
    • Latest FW on DSR4 and 888.
    • receiver mode is NA HYB

When I select a freq in the block 19 range using the 888 menus, it prompts me to select between 470 and 19.  Even if I select 19, it immediately reverts to 470, and therefore won't work with my block 19 tx.

However, if I manually select the frequency on the face of the DSR4, the DSR4 screen menu gives me a 470/19 toggle option...I choose the 19 option and it all works.  It even show blocks 19 on the 888/SL2 receiver menu.  But if I make any frequency adjustment now within the 888/SL2 menu to that channel, the 470/19 prompt kicks in and it reverts to 470 no matter what I select.

Am I missing something obvious?  Is this a known handshake bug in the SL2/DSR4 system?

    Thanks!

  7. It took me a while to get used to the 2 extra added clicks on the Diety TC box...I've been on the Tentacle ecosystem for years.  I keep the recorder as the master, keep 1 Diety box in my bag to jam, and then that box syncs all boxes and slate via bluetooth.  But now that I'm used to it, I really like it and it's been rock solid.  Clients love that slate too.

@thenannymohThanks for the pics of the Pelsue…question,  which I also have an inquiry to Pelsue about, How many sides of your model / design roll up? Just the “back” door? Or all of them?
Packed is it the same or smaller then the standard “Pop Up”?
    pics? (Assuming it’s 6’x6.5’)
How’s heat inside during full sun?
Again, waiting on Pelsue for a response as well, as it seems their site has some pertinent information lacking.

1 side rolls up.  Packed in a 4' bag.  Each side has a mesh window for ventilation, with rainproof covers.  It can take a total beating, really easy pop up/down...worth every penny.

Is anyone using non-lectrosonic Li-50b batteries in their units?

Seems kinda wild the lectro brand are so much more expensive.

It may not be what you want to hear, but the Lectro batts are worth the cost in the end.  They're consistent, dependable.

You know where my fuji or off brand batts are? In the back of the drawer. Some work ok for a while. Others are sketchy out of box.  When I can't rely on them, they just cost me more in the end.

  10. 1) depends on what kind of work you are realistically aiming for in the next year or so...narrative? docs? corporate? shorts?

    2) at some point there is definitely diminishing returns...at around the $1000 mark, you'll start paying 30% more for 10% improvement

    3) definitely buy used to get the best bang for buck...a 416 may not ever be the best choice, but it is rarely the wrong choice

    4) good mics never go out of style, and hold (or even increase) in value

    5) what recorder are you feeding?

    6) the older I get, the less I know

  11. Hello hivemind!  I had a cable made by Trewaudio for a ARRI Alexa Mini LF.  The connector is a 6-pin lemo.

When trying to use this cable for the first time, it simply wouldn't fit into the Arri's jack.  It is not a bent pin issue (they're aren't bent)...in fact, the lemo connector on the cable won't even go in far enough to connect to the pins.

    So question:

    1) Is it possible that Trew put on the 'wrong' 6-pin lemo end (is there even more than 1 type?)

    2) anyone else run into this problem?

    Thanks!

  12. Hi all - I was briefly part of ebay auction that went very oddly, then was taken down less than 12hrs after it started.  Seller was in California (maybe).  My spidey sense kicked in, wondering if it's stolen gear,  but when I returned to get screenshots the entire ad was gone.

This was the only screen grab I was able to get.

If you think this stuff was yours, DM me and I'll try to piece together what I remember about it so that you might be able to get more from info from ebay.

Recently A/B’d R1b against the LR in a playback setup / wireless send .

my experience was that yes , it can work , but not the right tool for the specific task .  R1b’s are great to use as a boom op and ifb listener .  Comteks as lowest quality minimum send. Understand it’s a fun small tool , but let them run time code syncing if they want to hassle anyone about wireless send size on camera .

Comteks have zero shielding... They are the worst on camera.
