I remember that the advice in the DAT days was to always archive in analogue tape !!! mike
  2. Interesting stuff!! Now we are faced with the glottle rattle or rasp like quality that particularly younger women adopt. It is found naturally in older men (particularly American) but it is now an adopted quality which is quite an unnatural and false to to point of amusing It's quite odd to listen to a female radio interviewer with a normal voice talking to a young raspy woman! mike

I used the first Fostex PD 2 in New Zealand for many years. It was logical but power hungry. Later I designed a headphone board for the PD4 which offered stereo/L/R and mid-side monitoring plus a better headphone amplifier too. mike
  4. Saw a current English/German feature production in a good small theatre last weekend. I was surprised that the dialogue was placed left or centre or right or in surrounds! It seemed like it was ready for release on DVD or Netflix A bit unnerving during a dialogue sequence during different shots!! mike
  5. For a boom to deliver really good audio I would only suggest a Lectro 400 series Being digital rather than analog their is a difference in quality I presume good audio is what is wanted by the production !!!??? mike
  6. From my experience of car rigs: Your approach is good for static/engine off as are Sanken CUB-01 For on the move the best approach is only lavs mike

  15. Yes we often tread a fine line especially when an actor/actress disapears off set without notice. I have on only a few occasions when checking radios hear a tinkling in the toilet and I make a point now of advising those with radios on that I will remove them if needed for their privacy and the safety of the equipment. mike
  16. I have a wonderful book "A Matter of Records" on the life of Fred Gaisberg a master of location recording. But unlike the stunning equipment that we use he recorded acoustically onto waxed zinc discs. Apart from classical recordings there was a great love of novelties recorded in foreign countries. He traveled to America Russia India and Europe by train and boat with very heavy equipment including the metal discs, acid and baths to etch his results in. The whole story is quite amazing and he lived to see electric recording and modern techniques and he died in 1952 in his late seventies! mike
  17. Hi Rick Yep those early Sony mikes were amazing! Large but so uniform in specs I used to use two ECM50's to demo phase issues With one out of phase and with matched gains there was no sound at all!!! Amazing mike
  18. Or even listen to the tracks and look at pictures! Gee it's not rocket science whilst sitting in an aircon room with a coffee machine nearby!! mike
