  1. Very neat job! Are the yellow components thermal fuses ? mike
  2. Tell you the real story: Much like Vincent says. And I'm talking about location work and not an acoustically treated studio! A short shotgun works perfectly well and yep an 8060 or similar is OK (I use a Sanken CS-1) Using a basic cardioide even a high quality large capsule close shows up lip slap and other mouth noises Don't listen to people who say never use a shot gun inside! If you are recording v/o place the mike close to the subject not a meter away. If recording interior choose a well furnished room not a bathroom or toilet I place my Sanken pointing across their mouth and very close, so no wind pop and they can read the script. The sample I attach was recorded on location in a caravan with the crew wrapping outside. No eq or noise reduction - nothing mike Sample vo.mp3
  3. For many years I've understood that post do not prefer mid side over XY Despite the BBC liking it for some work I heard it likened to telling a DP to shoot only on a 50mm lens! mike
  4. Would you need a boom sharpener then ? mike
  5. Yep I had this years ago on a music clip for a major, famous female singer. Was given a DAT tape with music on one track and time-code in the other track !!!??? Playback on a beach and moving!!!! No thanks mike
  6. Used a Portabrace for my 664 but it fell apart in Italy Totally converted to Orca for my 644 and 633 mike
  7. Are they detonators ????? mike
  8. Can you try it beforehand and have a listen?????? mike
  9. Totally agree John had the same issues in the dark my team trying to hunt for them on wrap. Even on commercial shoots where there are 10 units out (originally delivered in a Pelican) people still leave them on the floor and anywhere. Also I love it when they take them out of the numbered pouch and leave the pouch and the unit separately anywhere. I did once point out to the users that they each cost as much as a cellphone "oh wow" was the reply. mike
  10. Or the full menu of the camera system being used! mike
  11. Yes I guess that the need to pad down the t/code applies. Also in the old DAT days of record run sent by radio to t/code slate I inserted a low pass filter in the transmitter to round off the square edges of the code mike
  12. A Cub has to be placed on a surface (not hung in the air) Great on roof, dashboard or window glass I recorded a whole day of 5 people in a static van using jut two Cubs mike
  13. Static car a CUB-01 is amazing Moving vehicle - a lav is the way to go mike
  14. In New Guinea people live in long houses with a fire burning on the ground floor. The smoke keeps the mosquitoes away so if the emphysema does not kill you then the mosquitoes will! mike
  15. Exactly Mark! Noisy locations are the production's choice and tell the actors/presenter to speak up!! mike
  16. yep, done it both ways. More gear on the invoice is more money in the pot! mike
  17. Large condenser mikes used for music are usually close to a loud sound source. Electret personal mikes are usually close to to a person's mouth. The noise problem is usually not equipment based but location caused! With respect mike
  18. Totally and then they want to run away still wearing your transmitter etc! In answer to TV POST SOUND: Using a hard wired microphone can present problems in the control of dynamics. Using a good radio system you will find that the excellent compressors and limiters take control of louder unexpected peaks without audibly being detected. Normal human speech has a wide dynamic range - just listen to a dinner table conversation. If you have any spare time with you prod mixer give it a try both ways as it will surprise you! mike
  19. Great! I use my fingers and look at the machine! mike
  20. Take both I guess it's not too busy and you can always re-tune I lived there decades ago so have no current experience mike
  21. Yes Charlie and the team are on to it and so helpful!!!! mike
  22. Hi Mattias, I've done lots of this Yes dynamics are the way to go. Wind is not a problem with a mike near the exhaust as the noise level you are recording is much higher than any wind noise. Make sure you do not put the mike in the exhaust gas low is they are very hot. mike
