  1. Rereading the FAQ’s on Sound Devices website, I believe you are right. Those are the tested and approved one but anything that uses MCU should in theory work. Can always give it a try and see what happens.
  2. As of right now no. The list of compatible control surfaces is: Behringer X-TOUCH iCON Platform M+ (w D2 Display) iCON Platform X+ iCON Platform B+ Mackie MCU Pro Sonosax SX-LC8+ Sound Devices CL-12 Sound Devices CL-16 So there are options other then the CL-16. I’ve heard some people love the Sonosax, I believe it’s powered via usb as well (don’t quote me on that) making it easy to use on location. I have the icon M+ and for the most part have been happy with the limited use I’ve done with it.
  3. I started to dabble with WAVES at the end of last year and I’m planning on fully integrating into my workflow this year. The free is what really got me, especially for everything it does. It’s easy to use and everything looks clean. They’ve added features over the years it seems which continues to make it better, including reminders for soon to be due or overdue invoices. One other helpful thing is their reports, as I’m in the market to buy a house some of the lending agents I’ve been dealing with have been trying to discredit my freelance work. Being able to give them an updated P&L to show them I have the income I’m saying has been invaluable there. I believe it has unlimited clients and projects too. Easy to sort via all your clients too and see who has paid what or who owes you what still. Granted some of this might be very basic and par for the course, but I’m coming from a manual excel spreadsheet workflow so everything seems shiny and new to me I guess.

    Sound carts

I can't vouch for the opening the lid while still on the shelf bit, but I've been thinking about using this cart myself until I get around to making a real legit one. They have an XL version that will fit the pelicans you are talking about. It's also taller so would be a little easier to work off of I think.
  5. Used the hollyland on one job, full disclosure I wasn’t mixing this one, it as an MOS commercial with a crew I work with a lot. We had turn the hollyland off after an hour because it was interfering with our teradek too much. Can’t confirm it was the issue and going to do more testing later, but any time the hollyland was on we couldn’t get a solid picture on our directors feed. I’m almost positive part of the issue was close distance to each device, we had a teradek on the camera broadcasting to the AC and video village, the hope was the have a small handheld monitor for the director to walk around with then a large monitor for the rest of the producers to look at. So we had a teradek receiver on the large monitor than output to the hollyland to go to directors monitor and other devices. The teradek was close to the holly there so again, pretty sure that was the issue. Going to do some more testing with it and I’ll report back. I’ll also try it with some wireless to see if it interferes with any of that as well.
  6. Very embarrassing, but that was in fact it. Luckily no one else seemed to notice as i got a few compliments that everything sounded good. Was able to make the correction and it sounded even better though. Appreciate the feedback! Still, feel very silly for overlooking that.
  7. Recently I’ve been on a few gigs and have noticed some issues with my lectro wireless in terms of gain staging. There is a very high probability it’s something I’ve done wrong, so please let me know if I’ve overlooked something. I’m having issues with my SSM’s and SRc’s in terms of gain staging, it sounds like I’m overloading at some stage. I have them plugged into my 833 and during the recordings it’s not peaking there. But it sounds slightly distorted (like it’s peaking), I have the mixer gain down as far as it will go (12 dB) and the transmitter as well (-7). After a little while of trying a few different things I brought the output of the SRc down from +5, the way I understand it that brings it just about to line level. any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
  8. 822a...successor to 411s. But digital and backwards compatible (like pretty much all their new digital receivers). Looks very similar to the 411s but has two channels. Looks very interesting and excited to hear more about it.
  9. For those of you running an MM1, what’s your preferred power solution? Do the AA battery’s normally last a good amount of time or do you rig some external source to it?
  10. I also just got one (used form here on the site actually, it was a great deal). Does everyone charge extra for a smart slate though? Or do you include it in a basic kit rental?
  11. Appreciate the reply’s. Quick update, I was paid (the only one from the production I believe). I just stayed on her and continued to remind her how unprofessional it is to not pay your people and she eventually venmoed me the money.....even though she had us set up direct deposit. Got paid so that’s all that matters I guess. Not working with her again. still curious about the second half of my question, do any of you ask/receive payment up front? Is that a normal thing to do?
  12. Just ordered a hollyland Mars, excited to check it out. Also If anyone is thinking about getting one they are $200 off today at B&H and adorama (ends 7 July).
  13. Having a bit of an issue with past client of mine and curious if this has happened to anyone else and how they've handled it, or any tips on how to resolve the situation. Since most of my work has been for the production company I work for regularly and I've only started freelancing for real the past year I haven't had a contract for any of my freelance gigs. I just went in with blind faith that they would pay me, or I wouldn't deliver the audio (most times I'm just emailing it over after the shoot, no DIT or anything on these small gigs). I've learned my lesson from that blind faith though, did a shoot back in November for a documentary in the area and I still haven't been paid for it. Every time I reach out the Director/Producer she gives me the run around, shes sick, then sick again, this week it was her A/C is broken so shes waiting for someone to come fix it (not sure what that has to do with paying us though). I got my buddy on the shoot as the Gaffer and he hasn't been paid either, so naturally as the person who got him the job I feel bad about that too. It's now been over 8 months and still nothing... Any tips on how to deal with it would be appreciated. Going to start emailing her every day until I get paid I think. This brings me to part two here, do you all normally have who ever is hiring you sign a contract for you? I've worked for some people who have their own, which covers both sides but just wondering if it's normal to have your own to give the producer or whoever to sign just to be safe? Also is it ever accepted to ask for a portion of the payment upfront? Thanks!
  14. I don't think he was, I believe he was talking about the MKH418S
  15. There was a similar product on shark tank a few years back, they have a few different options and it appears that they have some new stuff coming out. I've been thinking the same things as you though. https://www.phonesoap.com/collections/all
  16. Doing some research on Wireless Designer, I'm interested in using it to help coordinate my freq's and scan the area. However, I don't have any compatible Lectro gear currently (No DSDQ or Venue, just some SRc's). I was curious if anyone has any experience connecting it with a third party scanner, such as an RF Explorer? I did read on Lectro's website it can accept data from various devices, but I'm assuming that means I have to conduct a scan then import the data, I'm hoping there is a way to do the scan inside WD real time.
  17. Seriously, that price is great. I’ve been Lectro all the way, but if their new transmitter is compact like an SSM I’ll probably be getting a setup like this.
  18. Standard Lectro for the most part, I do have a few Fuji batteries also that came with one SSM so I use them every once in a while and they work just as well.
  19. Whenever we can get back to production I'll double check everything and maybe try to do a timer one day to confirm.
  20. Not sure really haha. I was a bit skeptical when I first got them about the battery (I work for a small production company we bought 3 SSM's a few years ago), I thought we would have to get a whole bunch of the batteries to last the day. But running them at 50mW consistently and I've had days were the meter only drops one level. Normal days for us are a standard 12 hours, actors are probably mic'd up and on for 9-10 of those hours.
  21. I've used SSM for a few years not and haven't had this experience at all. Honestly, I've gone whole projects without changing them at all during any given day. I run them at 50mW too. Sometimes I'll change them at lunch just to be safe, or towards the end of the day during a break but they consistently get me over 8-9 hours, easily.

    Film Devices

Ken, is one of the bds systems included with the bag? Or are they a separate add on?

    Film Devices

They had a good presentation during the sound summit, the price is what gets me though.

Interesting design and approach. Curious what others think and if anyone is going to hop on the early bandwagon. I’m intrigued to say the least. https://filmdevices.com/product/rack-n-bag-medium/
