I have a B6 (grey band) that I rarely use, but I believe it behaves the same as you're experiencing.  My other lavs are COS-11 (3-wire) DPA 4060 (2-wire) and MKE-1 (2-wire) and they sound great all the time.

What recorder are you using? Have you tried playback to see it maybe the distortion is from another part of the chain?

I use the 633 and tried different things. Turned the input to mic and line, turned down the levels from the receivers. But the distortion occurs in the TX unfortunately.

Are your DPA and MKE1 2 wire or 2 wire + bias?

  2. I got a set from the rental to check if my has a problem or not. Both work the same.

So I have to get used to the WISYCOM gain structure and I must be carefull with the metering. I think it is not accurate. When I use my ears for gainstaging everything is fine. Just visually it don´t look like I am used to metering.

The Wisycoms are quit different from Lectro and there is a learning curve to understand their system. From handling the Lectro make more sense, but I thing after a while I get used to Italian style 🙂

Does your microphone has been wired for Lectrosonics and need to be re-wired for Wisycom? I am not sure if Lectrosonics and Wisycom shares the same wiring scheme. Check it out.

I had my Lectro mics rewired for Lemo Wisycom.

No experience with these particular mics or Wisycom wireless systems, but have you tried lowering the rx gain to a lower or negative value and then bumping the tx gain instead? Might be a gain staging issue where the received signal is fine, but it's clipping inside the receiver due to some high gain value (+12 or even at 0).

The receiver is fine. It is set to maximum +16dbu(recommended by the seller). I also tried to lower the gain, to see if my input stage distorts. Even at 00dbu the signal sounds distorted, when it gets louder.

There's a lot of different settings for mics in the Wisycom TX menu:

LEMO connector configurable on ‘mic’ display menu in 5 options:
    ▪ ’2 wires’: -54 dBu ÷ +26 dBu peak, no bias voltage
    ▪ ‘2 wires + bias’: -54 dBu ÷ + 6 dBu peak, 5.5 V on 4k7 bias supply
    ▪ ‘3 wires: -54 dBu ÷ +26 dBu peak
    ▪ ‘2 wires & phantom’: -54 dBu ÷ +26 dBu peak
    ▪ ‘2 wires + bias & phantom’: -54 dBu ÷ + 6 dBu peak, 5.5 V on 4k7 bias supply

Yes, I saw this in the manual and read also that for 2 wires + bias (this is my configuration) 6dbu peak is max. But does that mean, I am not allowed to use the metering on the devices? That would be strange.....

  4. Hi.
I've got my new Wisycom system. I am confused about the gain setting. Even if the bar is in the middle I've got some distortion on my VT 506, MKE2 and B6 when the voice gets louder. Before Wisycom I've used Lectrosonics without any problems even at higher gains.
Does someone have an advice or using the same mics and can recommend a gain setting?

  5. Hi,

normally as a freelance sound recordist with own equipment I calculate my working time from door to door. (From  home. Not from the hotel)

Today I had the case, that I am not allowed to do this and my start time for me is as on the call sheet and the end is when wrapped.

    I am working in Germany.

    How do you handle this?

And how do you argument that working time starts with loading equipment?

And another point is, do you calculate a safety buffer (e.g. traffic jams etc...)?

  6. Hi.

I am switching from Lectrosonics  (TA5) to Wisycom (Lemo 3 Pin)  and want to wire my mics by myself. But unfortunately can´t find informations about some models like

    Sennheiser MKE-2

    Tram TR-50

    Maybe someone can help me?

    Thx

  7. So the Wisycom support answered :

The only difference between 40 and 41 are the battery life, the RF max power (MTP41 can’t go up to 100mW) and it can’t power the PHA48 to supply phantom power, outside for these points MTP40 and 41 are absolutely the same range and audio wise.

All the MTP41S in Band 7 (470-663Mhz) we produce now will feature the LINEAR technology.

  8. The K-Tek looks good but I don´t know if it fits onto my SACHTLER harness. Maybe on the hooks upside. Do you use it with the K-Tek harness?

About the REI rain covers. I thought about something like this, but I need to have access to the recorder and see through the cover.

  9. Hi,

I wonder what is the best way to protect a sound bag from rain when doing e.g. a documentary?

I found two solutions from Sachtler - the Rain Poncho - and from ORCA - the OR-35 -.

I would prefer the small solution from ORCA when I am already wearing a rain jacket. But it looks not very  reliable when it´s windy and I think the water will find it´s way through the top mounting.

Are there any alternatives or do someone know how to protect it otherwise?

Yeah but my point is I almost never power done, my F4 only sips power, so can easily last all day loooong.

Thus when do you *need* to jam timecode? Only at the start of the day (and again at lunch break is reasonable, if you feel like it).

How is this a problem? It is just what you'd usually do anyway, makes no difference.

Yes. I am also not powering it down through the day. But I am synching it with the Ambient nano lock it. I feel more comfortable with it. So I have to deal living without pre roll. Maybe Zoom provide an update in the future. The F8 is a great device so far. I used it three weeks every day. Inside outside. Sun. Rain. Bumpy roads and under stress applications. It never failed.  😚
