  1. I'd been considering it and decided to go for it. The files can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3049624. Let me know if you make them and have any problems or suggestions!
  2. Thanks! They're made of Hatchbox PLA. I think I used my normal printer settings, so that'd be .175mm layer height.
  3. Hi Ilari, I've put a small ziptie on the cable inside the cap. Yes, the plugs are just pushed in for now. I incorporated some ridges into the design to increase the friction: If I have any issues with them coming out I could glue them, but so far they stay in place unless I'm specifically trying to remove them.
  4. Decided to make some proper right angle short XLRs for my bag; I previously had just cut the dust boot off the Neutriks, which shaved about half an inch but was pretty ugly. After a couple design iterations I came up with this: It's a pretty good friction fit, and the inner part of the plug keeps the connector in place in the shell. They fit really well in my bag: I made two versions to dress the cable for right or left exit. The plug is also keyed to the shell so it won't rotate. Whipped up a riser to get my receiver out of the bag so I can see the display. I also printed the camera mount attached to the RX. Finally, I found a mic case someone designed and modified it to fit my preamps and capsules. Much easier to throw the mics in my bag now. I used some of that rubbery expanded foam shelf liner inside the mic cases to cushion the devices.
  5. Perhaps @soundmanjohn can weigh in re: durability, he's been doing surround recording in the field for ages.
  6. Sorry to be off topic, but I've always wanted to turn a Brinks armored car into a mobile truck: Impractical? Probably. But a guy can dream…
  7. I really wish Izotope hadn't discontinued Alloy 2… it's my go-to processor. It still works but I fear it'll stop some day.
  8. Any chance of you making the STL files available (or for sale)? I'd love to try printing one, although I'd also have to design a grip.
  9. I've only used the stock cable, but I'll try another one this weekend. Although between age and hearing loss I don't know if I'm the best judge of hiss these days…
  10. My wife and I drove the ring road a month ago- you can't swing a boom without hitting amazing scenery. Enjoy!
  11. I have a Braven BRV-1, love that thing.
  12. You're looking at the H pad values, you need a T pad. If your impedances are correct, the resistor values are: (R1) 9904 Ohms (R3) 42 Ohms (R2) 160 Ohms If I had to build this pad out of what I have in the garage, I'd use: (R1) 10k ohms (R3) 47 ohms (R2) 100 ohms + 47 ohms. If the pad wasn't enough I'd add another 20 ohms to R2. But yeah, I'd probably just buy the Sescom cable. Even if I had all the parts on-hand to build the pad, the value of my time is more than the cost of that cable.
  13. Once you know the input and output impedances of your devices, use a calculator like http://www.nu9n.com/tpad-calculator.html to determine your resistor values. You'll need to build two T pads, one for each unbalanced channel. You might be able to build the pads inside a 1/4" TRS connector, but it'd be a lot easier to use a small project box.
  14. Got this from them this morning… ATTN MixPre-6 & MixPre-10T Users: Sound Devices is collaborating with Sennheiser to offer the full spatial audio experience for virtual reality (VR) video within Sennheiser’s AMBEO for VR partnership program. With the Sound Devices MixPre-6 & MixPre-10T portable recorders and Sennheiser’s AMBEO VR Mic, VR professionals can record and monitor premium 360° spatial audio for VR video. As an exclusive new feature to the VR partnership program, the MixPre-6 and MixPre-10T will be the first portable recorders to offer onboard AMBEO to binaural decoding. This allows VR creators to assess and make creative decisions about spatial audio content at time of capture, without needing a post-production workstation. Sound Devices will be releasing a free firmware update for the MixPre-6 and MixPre-10T—anticipated spring 2018—that offers: Record AMBEO VR mic in Ambisonics A-format or B-format with support for any mic orientation (Up, Down, Endfire) Stereo or Binaural headphone monitoring of AMBEO VR mic Support for both AmbiX and FuMa B-format standards We'll be showcasing the MixPre-6/MixPre-10T and AMBEO VR Mic pairing at NAB Show in Las Vegas – Booth #C6040. 15. Don't need it, can't justify it, would totally buy it
  16. After seeing @KGraham045's headphones here with a removable cable I wanted to do the same to my HD-25s. There isn't enough room in the headphone cup for a jack. A quick search online turned up someone that had already done this with a 3d printed jack holder and was kind enough to share the print file. A little printing, a little soldering, and: I forgot how fun it is working with Sennheiser's stainless steel cables…
  17. Printed the part and found a jack to fit, now I just have to do the soldering.
  18. Now I want to do that to my HD-25s. I'd have to design something to mount the jack but it should be doable. Someone already did this and posted files for the necessary parts- to the 3d printer!
  19. I'm mostly excited that this confirms that new functions can be added to existing units (cough cough MixPre 6 automixer).
  20. What I do is use regular linking on channels 1-2 and a custom headphone preset to monitor 1-2 with M/S decoding. That way I listen to the decoded signal on site but the isos are recorded raw for the most flexibility in post.
  21. A long time and several careers ago I worked at Masque Sound, a rental company in NJ that services Broadway and other markets. When the sound package from the original production of Cats came back a lot of "old" mics were sent to the dumpster. A coworker rescued several and I wound up with an RCA 74b in exchange for modifying his mixing console. Sent it off to Clarence Kane to be refurbed and had a Lundahl transformer installed. It's still one of my favorite VO mics.
