  1. Recheck the wiring info for the COS11 and may be check with Lectrosonics, they are extremely kind and helpful
  2. I run my Deva V with no back-up of any kind (media or recorder) except for a second drive in it's caddy. The Deva refused to record once (two months ago). A reboot didn't cured it. I swapped disks and continue recording. The bad disk mirrored OK to DVD-RAM. It was a suspicious disk since I bought it, so I just trashed it and bought a new hard disk for that caddy. It was good that the Deva refused to get into record on that disk: it preserved the rest of the data (I didn't mirrored it yet, ahem...!) I have a small 40GB bus-powered LaCie pocket drive in wich I (usually) mirror before burning the DVD-RAM I just bought an Edirol R-09 that I could use with a SD 302 mixer as a front-end in case the Deva is damaged in some way (It may be substituted by a ZFR100 when it cames out since it would have the added benefit of TC jamming and maybe direct lavalier connection... let's see. The R09 will stay anyway since it's great for concealed and/or dangerous missions) I will eventually get something like a 702T or even a 744T as a back-up, but I guess it will stay in my home to be a real back up and then use the R09 to finish the day... A good backup should not be in the same place as the main recorder, or it would be prone to the same cause of dissaster... (?) But I won't run the recorder at the same time as my Deva... I ask my Deva to make my life easier so I'm not going to complicate it. Anyhow I'd like to record to a second media on the Deva. A removable flash memory for no added weight or power consumption. This would be great IMHO. Not only as a back-up for the hard disk but as a main disk for high vibration or extreme cold or heat. I guess we'll see quite soon flash disks of 60 and more GB that will replace our current hard ones. Two of them would need less power than our current mechanic ones. I hope they'll be reliable enough for our application.
  3. Thanks Philip, I'll see what I can find...
  4. Hi from Barcelona, Spain. I can't help you much but just comment that I use my 411s with 65W Li-Ions NP1s with no problems after one year of use. I use the USA model so I can have 100mW on the TXs wich is great I've been using them with Schoeps CCMs (+ a Denecke phantom box) and it was a real pleasure. Anyhow, tell Larry Fisher from Lectro and will help you very generously for shure. Fernando
  5. Hi all. I bought one in a hurry for a commercial where I may have to hide a recorder inside a moving car to record driving sounds which could be wild (no synch) in case the wireless signal was no good. I'm very satisfied with it as a standalone unit of that price (280 euros or so!) I have only used it with it's own mics, just to explore it that way, and I'm amazed. I've also recorded voices or atmos with it and it returns a very acceptable quality recording (obv. far from two Schoeps into a Deva or a 7-series but amazing for that price) The user interface it's very fast and confortable to use (although I can't go from the end of a list to it's begining, but this is the only complaint) I bought a 1GB SanDisk Extreme III card. The recorder was inside a very fast driving car taped to the ceiling with foam in the middle. and recorded 98% OK, 2% being strong vibrations that saturated the mics, but also my Schoeps on a Floater. So I'm very impressed. It's great to do ethnomusicological recordings, antropological recordings, etc. Great to have it with you most of the time and record all that sounds you usually miss while in nature, weird places, etc. Or just record your cat's comments anytime from 2 inches and inmediately (about 5 seconds from off to record!) Extremely low handling noise! Two AAÂ alkaline lasted very long (two shooting days used now and then, about 500MB in 25 files + all the tests I did the day before) But a serious warning: if you use tape to fix it to something, when removing the tape you can take apart the unit!!! I accidentalyy opened the side and back pannels when taking the tape off! (argh!) It was easy to repair because I was in a calm and clean place out of the set, but not a good thing if it happens in a crowded set, the parts are very small. I updated the firmware from my Mac and it only worked using the supplied AC adapter (It did not connect using batteries through USB) I used that method to download the files from the unit to the computer too. ---> Now it would be good to have a working windshield for it, any ideas? Fernando P.S. I will do some tests: one using a battery operated medium quality stereo mic (Sony 999), another using a mixer as a front-end (MP2) and maybe another using a Schoeps+phantom directly into it... I'll report back.
  6. add AudioMedia, great and free. No wthey have a PDF edition too. I read AM and PAR
  7. Many thanks for the report Darren! Looking fw to see the results of your tests using microphones with it for those casual recordings. thanks again
  8. Thank you Darren. I'd like to know about it's performance with a good small mixer as front end (SD 302 or similar), includding using R-09 headphones out to hear a return from the mixer to monitor for overload, etc Fernando
  9. Hello from Barcelona, Spain (north Africa) Fernando de Izuzquiza
  10. Anyone knows about the possible modification? I can't find the source...
  11. Hi all, Anyone have experience recording audio on a Nagra IV SJ recorder. As you know, this particular model was intended for scientific measurement and it records "direct" to tape, without inserting emphasis/deemphasis at record/playback, -theoretically- having excessive tape hiss because of that. I'd like to know about any real experience with it, or well founded comments. It was used a lot to record subsonic sources like very low freq elephant talk, high frew insect calls, traffic rumble studies, etc. It's freq resp was 2,5Hz to 35kHz, and DC to 4kHz on the central FM channel. Thank you in advance, Fernando
  12. the boom man picture at least is from a sweden site, I can't find it now. Full of similar pictures
  13. I was using lead acid batteries before (small 7Ah to be more modular) Now I'm using 65W Li-Ion NP1 and I'm very happy. I have 14 currently. I run the Deva with 2 for a long day. 1 or 2 for the wireless video RX and monitor. 1 or 2 for the wireless and wireless feed to video/director. The deva uses one internally and one externally with a NP1 box. The video has a single box and swap the battery manually, same for the wireless (although I'll get a double box for this) I try to avoid distribution as much as I can. If I have to, I use a BDS or a small box I built with the cables going out of it instead using male and female connectors to keep it simple and much lighter. This way I never have to plug my cart to AC, so one less cable and one less thing to worry when re-setting. In fact I only use one cable, the boom one, and I'm going to eliminate it very soon. Li-Ions are also very light and using NP1 means you only carry the weight you need/want. I can charge 8 65W NP1 in 5 hours using two 4x chargers from Proctor&Bray (UK). IDX has one that can charge 4 in 2 1/2 hours. Fernando
  14. Hi SImon. I'm using BlackBoxVideo TC link at 433MHz and 10mW. Rugged box, 9V battery drawer, good power remaining indicator, the RX has a "receiving TC" LED also, with a lithium 9V it lasts for ages. I choosed the BBV system over the Ambient one because the BBV has a BNC connector for the antenna (so you can insert a 433MHz amp if you need it) and a connector for the cable (so you can use different cable configurations) Both TX and RX comes with a BNC connector for the signal that I substituted for a 1/4'' mono female, wich fits perfectly and let me use low profile right angle 1/4'' plugs. The Sennheiser are much smaller but you'll have to change batteries much more often. They cost about the same, so maybe the Senn is a better option so you can use it as a spare wireless for headphone feeds, etc Fernando
  15. I think new Denecke slates can check for drift too (check TS-C and TS-3)
  16. Hi Darren. Not me (using a Deva V currently and PD-4 before) but I use a Denecke TS-3 wich could serve as a generator. I guess that will be the case of the new Zax apparatus (I mean it will need ext TC to be set up) It seems it will have TC out though... (useless testimonial? = )
  17. I don't. I like this forum's look very much. It's simple and relaxing. (plus it's quite smart feature-wise) Thanks for it!
  18. Hi. Jeff, you mean you find the W20R1 to be the more transparent of the Schoeps windshields? I'm looking for something to protect two Schoeps for exterior ORTF and AB atmo recording using 4 and 2 (CCM5 really)... I need something ligth but efficient so I can avoid mounting the Rycotes on a T bar... I have W5 and W5D but not shure it will be enough for exteriors. For the CCM41 on a boom I use the Rycote mono extended ballgag and for MS or XY the stereo extended ball gag, but this is too heavy if you set up two, three, four or five mics in a MAB1000, A-Ray or simple T bar...
  19. Yes, the Sony looks funny (I stored the image when I first saw it, I thought it was a fake!) Good to have a report and know the price. Thanks It looks like it has a 3/8'' thread on the back. If true, I think that's cool. It could work with a foam handle or a mini clamp (grip it to a tree, play rec and have a nice nap) But I see from a review that a real windjammer is needed as I suspected It is fast to power on and start recording?
  20. >and a pin for ASCII in/out. Presumably it is the latter pin that makes it possible to jam the recorder with Aaton ASCII. Yes, it should
  21. Another option could be the Pearl MSH10. I did not have the opportunity to try it though. I also have a Sony 999 wich has a decoded (L R) output but is less sensitive. Not bad, but a toy compared to Schoeps or Pearl. I currently use Schoeps CCM for MS (41 & A nice alternative with CCMs is to use a CCM5 as the M mic so you have a cardioid and a omni for the M channel. MS using omni for M is interesting and also a good choice if it's very windy. Anyhow you better use a Floater (Ambient) with an MS rig, and a LC60U filter too sometimes. I was considering the Soundfield now that is much lighter and that the interface is smaller and more practical, but I wonder about the spaciousness of the resulting image since the capsules (or the multicapsule if you preffer) are arranged in a coincident setup... I should insist for a demo, but here in Spain that is soooo rare! ---> I've been told Schoeps prices are going up a 7% in April. Anyone can confirm this, please? (or is a trick of my local dealer?) <---
  22. I use Ambient "Eumel". It's the most compact 48V adapter I found. Recently I saw something in Lectro catalog, very similar to the Eumel, search there also.
  23. ...it was maybe me who asked on RAMPS... I really wish I had something small that I would not mind to take with me when I walk in the forest, a good antropological and ethnomusicological tool. Easy to carry, easy to hide when needed, AA bateries... (and-with-a-wind-ja-merrrrrrr! = It's not shipping yet but soon will be (that said someone around here that inquired Roland directly)
