  1. Is the output of the Sennheiser G3 wireless receiver "hot" enough to properly drive the line level only inputs on the Alexa? I was planning on using my G3's to send a mono scratch track to the Alexa on a shoot this coming weekend. I've worked with the Alexa before, but never with a G3 receiver. Thanks, Tom
  2. cinetj, That is correct. The output wiring from a G3 receiver is unbalanced only! I have not had to wire a cable for the Alexa, but I would suspect: G3 Tip to Alexa signal "+" G3 Sleeve to Alexa signal "-" AND shield. That's how the XLR cable included with the G3 receiver is wired. Tom
  3. He's has to be fairly young. In spite of his awkwardness and lack of knowledge, I think he's charming. Besides, I've heard many a crew member, and occasionally even a so called A2, try to "fake it" in a very similar manor that this guy is doing. If he keeps at it, he will probably, eventually, learn quite a bit. I wish him well. I will not however recommend his videos as a source of audio education. Tom
  4. Yes. Those Oktava 012's have terrible handling noise. If you use their in-line hi pass filter, they're okay, but sadly it does decrease the signal to noise ratio. That being said it is a "great mic for the money", and might just do the trick. Did you ever test them with the hi pass filter? Tom
  5. That is correct! You must connect the shield o BOTH the tip and the sleeve of the mini plug, and the signal + to the ring. I've probably wired a dozen or more of these cables and that is the only configuration that works "well". Tom
  6. Those are pretty cool. Are there any dealers for them in the USA? Tom
  7. Very true! However there is a "possibility" that there may be some other places in the hardware to pick up a few dB more gain. I'm not talking mic pres. I mean just a few additional dB that possibly could be accessed with a firmware update. Of course only Sound Devices would know. I'd love to see it if possible. Just today I was trying to use a Sennheiser G3 with one of the TA3 line inputs on the 633, and it was VERY difficult to get sufficient gain for the iso track without pushing the gain of the transmitter to the point where it lacked much headroom, and could easily distort. Another 10dB of gain would probably do it. Tom
  8. Well... I basically agree! I probably would have phrased it a little more gently, but I have often felt the same way. I do wish people in general were more kind, not just here, but everywhere. It seems there are only a few that come by it naturally. Sadly, I am not one of them! i have to make a conscience effort to be kind, and even then I often fail. We work in a tough business that, I am afraid, has made many of us very "hard" . It is something I feel we need to continually guard against. The "golden rule" sounds so trite, but I can think of no better way to say it. Happy New Year Tom
  9. Thanks for the link. Just ordered a couple. I think these are better suited than the PSC for this application. Tom
  10. I'm been trying to find this specific style of "boom pole holder" and can not find it. Who makes this and where can I geet it? Tom
  11. While some may or may not approve of his comments, it is essential that we remember this. The concept of not offending people, and the concept of freedom of speech are often mutually exclusive. Which one would you like to keep? Tom

    Continuity

I thought this was an excellent little piece and clearly demonstrates how often we fail to notice continuity problems in film. Tom http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ubNF9QNEQLA
  13. Actually, I'd contend that there are very few countries that hate us. There a number of "governments" that hate us, but often the people of those countries do not feel the same way. It is my belief that counties are the people, not their governments! Tom
  14. Oh! You did well. I sold mine this past April for $2200. Well, actually, that included "some" (not all) of the shipping and insurance. Tom
  15. Very good to know! Thanks for that tidbit. Is the reverse also true? Tom
  16. How big a bite is this going to be? Are we talking pretty much everything between 600-700mhz? And when is this scheduled to take place? Tom
  17. While most of us would like to think of ourselves as "middle class", it is difficult category to accurately define. That being said, the "median" income in the USA is about $30,000 a year. Most of us here should consider ourselves very blessed! It's a good time of year to remember that and to reach out to others in need. Tom
  18. Agreed! Having the return metering on is a very dangerous proposition! Tom
  19. Very interesting. You know, I was certain that I was noticing increased noise, I just never associated it with the roll off filter. I may have to rethink whether or not I want to continue using it. I also wonder if the new preamp has this problem or not. Tom
  20. Not to mention that the current draw on the T1 is hideous! I have been using a T! in my bag for some time now. When I turn it off, I find I get about 40% more run time. As soon as I can find a good deal on a used T2, I will be replacing my T1. Tom
  21. It would be nice if Sound Devices made a small handheld recorder with built in mics, but also with a couple XLR's so you could have the option to use any mic of your own choosing. Tom
  22. Thanks for the help guys. It looks like I'll be working with this camera for the next 2 weekends, so I went ahead and ordered/built the necessary cables. I'm kind of perturbed that I have to buy yet another "proprietary" Red cable! I know some people love these cameras... I'm not one of them. It just seems like a real expensive 5D. Tom
  23. Agreed. That was my conclusion as well. However, I know I was also doing a number of front panel short cuts on my 664 at this same time, and I don't always remember them correctly. So it is possible I did something silly. I also asked the "owner/operator" of the Epic if he had ever experienced this before and he said no. Tom
  24. Ah! Thanks. I saw that but thought that was most likely a "video sync" port. It would seem to me, it should be labeled "Timecode" or TC. Of course looking back it doesn't really matter. I certainly did not have the correct connector to interface with the Epic, however looking forward I'll make sure I do. Tom
