  1. I'd use mini circuit splitters to split the antennas into both receivers. They aren't that expensive, I also bought some some time ago and it was totally worth it.

I used two Mini Circuits ZFSC-2-2+

Just make sure you split the antennas correctly (left antenna into channel 1 of both receivers and right antenna into channel 2 for example). Don't split one antenna into both channels of the same receiver ;)

I like the price tag, but I worry about buying from a company whose business model is mass production rather than service to our industry.

I've burned myself on deity gear, causing a disaster in a shooting. Faulty microdot adapter, my replacement broke right after that one. And when it worked I caught phone interferences from the microphone, unless I used the crappy one that came with the duo rx.

So I only used the Duo RX once, literally.

Long story short, the last thing I would skimp on would be battery and power distro, because that could be an easy way to ruin your whole kit.

Like buying a cheap PSU for a high-end PC.

make sure that potential negative comments don’t refer to older mics

That is the difficult part actually.

But I did visit a friend today who has proper cables and we tested the CCM 41 with a ZMT4.

One cable gave us noise, another didn't. The one that had RF noises was a Lemo to Lemo cable without RF any specific RF shielding.

Turns out the RF shield is direly needed.

Now I'm having a local dealer make me a cable from Lemo CCM to Lemo ZMT.

The thing is, the RF shielding circuit is in the XLR, but my cable doesn't have XLR so they'll add a small knob on the cable to include the RF protector.

    That should do the trick.

The noise floor wasn't nearly as bad as I would have thought, so I'm going to get a CMC1L and an MK41 as a solid choice ;)

  4. I've asked the same question in a Facebook group, so please forgive me if I copy and paste the text here :)

I'm on the fence about what indoor mic to buy.

I really want a Schoeps CCM 41 L, as all my other mics are also Schoeps (and I have accessories for CCMs), but I was told there is an issue with whine/noise/RF interference when paired with the ZMT4 as opposed to DPA small condenser mics for example (specifically the 4018).

Now since it would be my indoor mic I don't plan on going wireless all the time, only when necessary, but it is still something that I would like to keep in consideration. Also for rigging cars, now that I think of it.

So what are your experiences with Schoeps mics on ZMT4?

How is the noise floor when pairing these?

(if anyone has both and could do a quick recording that would be amazing)

  5. I have both and don't use the SNA anymore. They are very clunky, get caught everywhere and have sharp edges. Also they fold all the time when you bump anything, no matter how hard you tighten the screws.
The betsos have roundish corners and are a lot easier to manage.

Didn't do range tests, but even if the range on the SNAs would be a bit better I'd still use the bowties.

Yes, I thought about mounting positions as a variable, and did a couple of quick tests to see if there was any significant impact on changing this a bit: there was none in this case. The HC-22 has a very light (aluminium) interference tube and a brass-barreled preamp, so is very much weighted to the back: the centre of gravity of the mic and its XLR connector was, as a result, nicely between the lyres (15mm behind the front lyre). The mic as set up for the tests (and in the photos) is exactly centrally positioned in the NS-DB4 Nano Shield basket: the front end of the mic is just short of the hemisphere at the front of the basket. I'd say that is a perfect set up, but evidently you are doing something very different: what? A photo would help.

Which Nano Shield model did you test, with what mic and what lyres? And, assuming the same mic, what Cyclone model and what lyres?

    Cheers,

    Roland

    I'm using a CMIT 5u in a NS4-DB nano shield - blue lyres.

Got no photo on hand as I don't even use the nano shield because of this.

I've also tried positioning the lyres differently, like further apart, closer together etc.

Nothing changed, no matter what I do with the exception being removing the blimp.

I know it probably won't help those encountering evident problems with their Nano Shields, and does not touch on Cinelas at all, but I spent some time comparing the handling noise of my medium Cyclone vs one of my two Nano Shields for my own interest - not least to see if I was missing something - and have written it up. If nothing else, it might stimulate others to clarify what set ups are giving issues: certainly it brought home to me that lyre shore values don't translate from old style to Nano Shield style, and that info on the latter isn't easy to find. I did find the attached table though, which may be of use.

Oh, and the blog article if anyone is interested is here: https://drbadphil.com/https-drbadphil-com-cyclone-and-nano-shield-comparing-handling-noise

Strangely your results are vastly different from my tests. Granted my tests were very rudimentary.

I have a medium cyclone and a bank shield with upgrade, using the correct lyres od course. Test was slight fingerdrumming on the boom pole, once in the basketed cyclone and basketed nano shield.

The difference for me was around 8db more noise on the bank shield though. Clearly a lot louder.

From your pictures I gather that you mounted the mic very front heavy... Maybe i should try that as well. Otherwise I'm very intrigued as what the heck could be the difference between our Nano shields.

I would say, see what one can improve with the booming technique before blaming the equipment, compared to the old windshield, the Nano Shield is a thousand miles better.

While I agree to some extent, it's easy to say when you work in a controlled and planned environment.

Once you do hectic or spontaneous reports and docus you will be forced to switch positions and angles without warning and in such an environment the nano shield is just a complete failure.

Even bought a Hide-a-mic re:pose to try to fix it (plus the 3d tex upgrade) and with years of experience the handling noise is still too much. A colleague of mine is selling his for this reason.

(To be honest the re:pose didn't have an effect at all.)

I would love to use my nano shield more, but if the audio quality suffers then I can't.

Only use it for loud environments where I know handling noise won't be too much if an issue.

    Wha happened? I’m curious.

The new nano shield is a mess, they started making microphones, Timo left Rycote, their support took a few months to pick up where he left...

I don't have much to do with Rycote, but even I got to feel all that due to the correspondence about the issues with the nano shield. Who knows what else happened.

Hi I had same issue with re:pose worse noise than before.. turns out there is a specific way to mount the re:pose and xlr holder, I have had great success since changing re:pose position. Pic attached to indicate.. The re:pose has to be at bottom with xlr holder at boom Pole end and the screw thread washer at the boom mount thread end not reopse thread end. I would use a yellow with a windshield myself I use the white for interior rig, yellow for medium basket rig and a red on my stereo basket rig.

Oh wow, I didn't even think of trying it that way. I'll have to try it ASAP, this seems promising!

A thousand thanks for the heads up :)

I do wonder however why that would make a difference...

  11. I guess I can chime in since I have used it a few days now.

That said, I've used it a few days now because it's actually usable - before the upgrade it was terrible.

The smallest movement could be heard in the mix, so I went back to using my (heavy af) Cyclone medium, which has less of a resonance and you don't hear hand movements as much.

The Nano Shield is definitely better after the uupgrade, but still could use iimprovement

I'm actually curious if Rycote is going to improve it further?

Also tried it with the Hide-a-mic Re:pose, but that thing is more useless than the original Nano Shield (I used the white one after weighing the Nano).

@Spin360 Thats slick! What do you use as antenna combiner for the Lectros?

I'm using two Mini Circuit splitters that were recommended to me here in the forum. They've been working perfectly and don't waste nearly as much space as a full blown splitter.

They are sitting right below the Mixpre :)

  13. Me being supercompact and mobile.

    Mixpre 10T II

    2x DCR822

    Audioroot BG-DH MK2

held together by a dashboard I designed and printed.

Might buy a Nova soonish though... Playing with that idea, but I actually like this setup very very much. Not sure if I'd even sell it :)

  14. Hello fellow sound people!

I've been looking into finding the perfect solution for traveling with my gear while having it as compact and functional as possible.

I had an orca OR-26 until recently but its quality was rather lacking and the padding wasted a lot of space. Also it tended to fall over, which ja bad because I use the trolley/case as stand for my audio bag when doing interviews.

So right now I am using a Peli Air 1535 case with trekpak insert - and its ALMOST perfect.

My issue isbthst the case is just large enough to get my essentials in there, but not everything that I need for bigger gigs. Also the wheels are tiny and terrible.

I've attached jmages so you can imagine how I use my case.

I've tried finding a similarly sized peli case, the 1650  or the 1615 would be OK, but its wheels are also terrible and they are 10cm thicker, which I don't need (might be a waste of space).

So are there any alternatives? What do you guys use?

The most important part is mobility. I travel via train, so I need everything in an easily transportable case that is well protected. I want to avoid buying a car for as long as possible :)

But having perfect order and a neatly packed case is also really important to me, which is why I really like the trekpack solution.
