NEW WEBSITE & BRANDING COMING VERY SOON!
We are so excited to announce that we are launching our new website very soon! Not only are we putting search at the heart of our website, we are adding a special section for expendables allowing you quick and easy to access to the items you need constantly which we are calling TAI express. You might also notice a difference in our newsletters and social media posts as well.
We will be getting back to our roots of providing you the very best in rental, service, and sales. With that, we are reverting back to our original name of Topam Audio Incorporated. You can still call us T-A-I. We ask that if you find or experience any issues, to let us know, we would love feedback so that we can continually improve your experience with us.
This overhaul will be continually built upon and this is only the first stage!
Got this email a couple of weeks ago. Mostly "insane" deal promo stuff, and rebranding talk...

Yikes. Sounds like a deliberate move away from servicing these older devices. The first option I was offered was local support, so as long as they continue to make parts and training available to their resellers, I guess that's the new default.
Their resellers list does indicate authorized service partners: https://www.sounddevices.com/resellers/
-
I inquired about 302 service in late 2021, and the flat fee was $295US plus parts, though they did recommend local Toronto usual suspects as a first step for speed and to avoid shipping costs. It turned out to be cheaper to buy another used, but didn't seem unreasonable.
Here's what SD said about the send it to the mothership option at the time.
QuoteWork directly with Sound Devices. If you decide to take this route, please start your request here: https://service.sounddevices.com/contact-support/
While repair costs may vary per reseller, Sound Devices has a flat labor fee of US$295.00 for the 302. Additional costs include parts and shipping. However, if you pre-approve use of up to $100 in parts, we will reduce the final cost by $40. This does not mean we will use $100 in parts, but pre-approval will reduce the chance of requiring an estimate first.

Beware the fire ants, though!

Orca rainshields are available as cheap spare parts, and there's probably one that fits the Condor/Nova rig. Good quality, with convenient hook and loop strips already in place. I used one recently for the older K-Tek Stringray medium.
Spare parts is its own site. Search for TPU for a quick overview of available rainshields, but you'll probably want to take a look at the covers for the Nova bags.
Their bagfinder will point you at the Nova-compatible offerings:
https://www.orcabags.com/bagfinder/
OR-330 and OR-272 are the slimmer Nova bags; the 272's closest to the Condor, I think? Anyway, search for tpu 330 or tpu 272 in the spares, and you can see them.
Here's the OR-330 rain cover, for example, SKU OSP-10330-1
http://orcabagssp.com/?product=top-tpu-cover-for-or-330-31-5cmx34cm
And for the OR-272, SKU OSP-10272-1
Top TPU cover for OR-272 16CM×28.5CM
http://orcabagssp.com/?product=top-tpu-cover-10
The 330 one would allow a bit of working room under the cover; the 272 looks pretty tight.
Think mine was about five bucks at B&H. Usual suspects likely have stock, of course.
Edit: Just noticed the EU location. Audiosense.be has the OSP-10300-1 https://www.audiosense.be/en/orca-osp-1030-1-orca-osp10301

I saw that, and I think it was removed by eBay for other reasons. The seller seems to have vanished, too, along with a bunch of similar items. One of the pictures on each was a note saying "don't bid, bids will be removed, it's only available at the buy now price by emailing an address." eBay frowns on that kind of thing: no cut for them, no protections for buyers, etc. so they likely shut it down. I think it's also a tactic associated with hijacked seller accounts, so Spidey senses were warranted.

Sound Devices has a 6 series media page, last updated December 2021. It lists CF cards they've tested. The benchmark testing was on 6s. Not sure there'd be too much difference between say a 688 and a 788's requirements?
https://www.sounddevices.com/6-series-approved-media-list/
Pasted for posterity:
QuoteSound Devices’ own brand of approved media cards – the SAM-64SD, SAM-128SD, and SAM-32CF II – have been optimized and extensively tested to ensure fast and flawless performance when used with the 6-Series of mixer/recorders.
Type Size Brand Model CF 32 GB Sound Devices UDMA7; 150MB/s read 120MB/s write The cards from other manufacturers listed below have successfully passed benchmark testing with the 633, 664 and 688. Many other cards may work but their performance and reliability cannot be confirmed unless they have been extensively tested at Sound Devices.CF Cards

The manual recommends UDMA for high track counts and higher rates, if I recall.
https://www.sounddevices.com/compact-flash-card-recommendations-for-7-series/
QuoteThere are numerous options available on the market. With such a wide range of CF options available (the actual flash RAM chips come from very few vendors, however) and with the types, speeds, and capacities continuing to evolve, there is no practical way for Sound Devices to keep up with them. Fortunately, the 7-Series recorders work well with nearly all CF type I and Type II cards, including Microdrives. If you are recording high data rates for test/measurement (>96 kHz sampling rates) we recommend the 40x or greater speed cards. These can support higher track counts and sampling rates. If you are recording typical audio rates, nearly any modern card will work well.

Indeed, and craftsmanship is always it's own reward.

Very nice. Inspired Energy has their dust covers, not sure what they run. Might be at the usual suspects?

Think I might have seen this linked here?
Edit: news story says this was a Sony:
QuoteBut, as recounted in David Yaffe’s Mitchell biography Reckless Daughter, Mitchell’s initial exchange with Hendrix seems to have happened when the Foxy Lady guitarist shyly approached her at the club that night, carrying a portable (but clunky) Sony tape recorder:
“My name is Jimi Hendrix and I was just signed to Reprise, the same label that you’re on,” he said, according to Mitchell. “Could I tape your show?”
“Sure,” said Mitchell.
Hendrix then situated himself close to the stage, set up the reel-to-reel recorder, put on a pair of headphones and taped the solo-acoustic performance. “He didn’t put [the tape recorder] there and back off,” Mitchell recalled. “He engineered it all the way through.”

7.17 just released, seems to address this.
"Rare, brief interruptions of audio in recorded files and USB outputs no longer occur."

Couple of shrink tape and "liquid electrical tape" pointers from 2012.

That's Patrick's fine design and 3D print, I think. See up-thread:
It looks like the 3D printed accessory shown in their video of DSLR use, about 2:19, so perhaps that's what Sonosax provides in the mounting accessory files they mention on their M2D2 page. The pictures are of a different bracket, and I can't actually see a link there at the moment, so contact Sonosax if you don't find them.

Shure has an interesting theater tips video where this comes up. The notes for the video list gauge and type of wire.
Ear rig action starts 41:30ish.
-
Ask Gene Martin at Audio Dept/Sound Guys Solutions? That MMA-A mount (and maybe a couple of the other bits) look 3D printed, I think? Might've been his prototypes.

If that's a modular windshield (WS2 or WS3?) I think you want this bit:
https://www.reddingaudiostore.com/catalog/item/8157888/8840148.htm
They say:
Rycote M5 Modular Star Knob and M5 washer, part number 048432
Rycote M5 Modular Star Knob and M5 washer, for securing bracket to modular bar. A Modular suspension requires two star knobs in use.
It's $7USD at Redding, but probably findable elsewhere given the part number.
At some point Rycote seems to have made their own parts catalogue less findable, but you could probably confirm the windshield model and go from there to try to find the specific part if this isn't it.
Redding has a pretty comprehensive breakdown of Rycote (and other kit they deal in ) here:

Smallrig has a bunch of cable clamps that'll mount to cheeseplates and 15mm rods etc.
https://www.smallrig.com/search.php?search_query=cable§ion=product
Doesn't sound like you need They'll also cheerfully listen to design ideas and give you credit and one of the finished product (for ffree). It seems so cheerful it can't be at all piratical.
https://www.smallrig.com/co-designs/
Camvate is in that same space, seem to be of identical quality (in my limited experience) and generally has a little wider range of audio-friendly bobs. Their cable section includes clamps and actual cables.
https://www.camvate.com/collections/cable-connector-444
Cables, for example:
They generally include specs for supported diameters on clamps and things, so you can almost certainly tinkertoy something up.

Appears to be live now. Little more detail on K-Tek's site, and a video.
https://ktekpro.com/product/kstglx-k-tek-stingray-large-x-audio-mixer-recorder-bag-x-series/
I totally forgot that they ran that video for it during Sound Summit earlier this year. To be fair, it was 2:18 minutes in...

I see there're a couple of MX-5050s coming up for auction in Canada this week.
https://bid.asta.auction/search?key=otari&xclosed=on&xclosed=
No affiliation, but I bought some DPAs when the Canadian distributor used these guys for old stock clearout. That experience was fine. They were booking pandemic online 'viewings' back then due to pandemic: I didn't bother since everything I was looking at was new, but this lot is much harder-ridden, so might be a good idea. Factoring in shipping/brokerage and the fairly hefty 17% buyers' premium on this sale probably makes this more mildly interesting than attractive, but might be worth checking out if somebody's looking.
Not shilling, but of course I'll take this down if it's inappropriate.

Razor blade, gently and obliquely applied to an edge might give you enough to peel the rest off. Perhaps some slight chance of scraping the surface. Or slicing off a fingertip.

Looks like there's a Large-X coming, KSTGLX. When I inquired about options for a 788t/cl-8 in current offerings (now that the medium's retired), Tino responded that this was coming Julyish, and would work. He said it'll have the Stingray X features; a little smaller than the current large, and a little roomier than the medium. I wonder if B&H have jumped the gun a little, as it's not up at usual suspects, and there's no marketing metadata for the page. $389.90USD in orange:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1639190-REG/k_tek_kstglx_stingray_large_x_orange_for_sd.html
Presumably purple premium for purple premium people?
Noyzboyz.nl has it up, too, with pics. €360,58 before VAT.
https://www.noyzboyz.nl/en/k-tek-kstglx.html
Might still go for a used medium, though.

Lectrosonics seems to have an ebay outlet. (News to me.) They have some UCR401s there at the moment as new old stock with full warranty for $399USD. If you can pick up some transmitters used, that's ballpark.

Wimpy collectible breakfast mug ad, apparently (yep, South African, judging by R39.95). Slightly longer version on vimeo, and a showreel for the director, Trevor Clarence, too, though I can't quite get that embed. Thanks for posting it!
