Before casting any judgement on the lack of auto-trim just wait and see. If the new trim method is a complete failure - which I don't think it is - perhaps they can add auto trim back into Nova.

Definitely, I don’t mean to cast judgement. It was meant to be more of a praise to autotrim and how quick it can be on a multichannel shoot. 🙂 We will wait and see how the new method works in the real world.

Hate to be downer, and I already preordered a Nova and URX100, but that doesn’t sound faster or more intuitive than autotrim to me. Also, do you have to then hit another button to restore the 5 encoders to being faders after putting them in trim mode? Or do they default to faders after a certain period of time?

I kind of agree with you, depending on what channel you are trying to adjust and where you are starting from, it could be quite a few button pushes. As far as I understand it, you have to push the trim button once to access trim for 1-5, a second time for 6-10, etc. You then would have to push the fader button again to get to 1-5 faders, and a second time to get to 6-10, and so forth.

I love auto trim as well.

But  auto trim - as you currently know it - is not in Nova.

That's because auto trim is no longer necessary.

Since nova's 5 knobs are encoders that allows for each knob to be either a faders x 5, an input trim knob for each assigned input or a zaxnet remote gain control knob for each input.

The flexability the encoders give nova is huge.

So don't think of it like you're loosing auto trim - think of it like you're gaining auto trim on steroids.

'Auto trim on steroids', I'm ready to believe.....:)

Flexibility is one characteristic, the need to think, and particularly speed, are others.

    Autotrim is mechanically logical.
Could you perhaps clarify some of the following please -

Say you want to trim, rather than fade, your fifth and your sixth input, and all five pots are currently set to fade, what button presses would you need  to achieve that?
Are the encoders themselves 'pressable' as user assigned switches? If not how do you switch from fade to trim, and presumably to the second bank for the sixth input, and determine that the second bank would come up as trim etc. etc?

    Thanks....

P.S. Any time scale on the Nova manual being published?

I'm not 100% sure how it works, but it sounded like you would have to push the trim button to access trim control on the encoders. If you wanted trim 5, you would twist the 5th knob, if you needed to access trim 6, you would have to hit the trim button again to access 6-10. I think this is how it works, but again I'm not totally sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But if that is the case, it does seem a bit more cumbersome to access than autotrim in my opinion, but maybe not. One might just have to get used to it. I do remember initially when autotrim was released, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it compared to having a physical gain knob. It turns out I think autotrim turned into one of the quickest and easiest ways to access gain control, even over a physical knob. On the other hand there is the example of virtual faders, which were just too cumbersome and difficult to access on the fly in a multicast or reality situation. That is why I gravitated toward the FP8.All of this is just my personal experience with these things. I think autotrim was a great advance over physical faders and I'm a little sad to see it go, but hopefully it is for a new and better way.

I am in line to find this out. Just completed my order for a nova and 2x 212's. Now the wait begins... this thing crosses of a lot on my list when it comes to my particular workflow. Hoping this all in one unit really does the job indeed time will tell. I should be able to give some input on these exact scenarios above - qrx whips vs mic plexer vs dipoles vs nova whips vs nova dipoles in real world comparisons

I would love to hear your findings when everything finally ships!

  5. I’m curious how well the wireless performs in Nova in comparison to whips on QRX 200s and also to QRXs with Micplexer, both whips and dipoles. Time will tell!

Any card I have that records in the manner the OP mentioned goes in the trash.  No 2nd chances with digital media.

I agree too. I don’t think I’ll be using this card anymore either way. Better safe than sorry. I’ll try the formatting thing just out of curiosity. The card formats properly in the 633 though.

Did anyone who has had this issue done a secure wipe (i.e. write zeros over the entire card) of the card and then tried using it again. This will help identify any issues the card may have. Can do this within Apple's Disk Utility. No idea how to do on a PC.

Once done I would then format the card within the 633.

Just curious how this would help identify any issues with the card?

In the first 2 weeks of my 633's first film shoot, there were 9 glitches- they all happened on day 4 of shooting and had pretty random groupings with

2 glitches on 1 take, 4 glitches on another, 1 glitch apiece on two more takes, and 3 glitches on another take.

I was using Lexar Professional 64 GB 400X speed SD cards and Sandisk Extreme CF cards- Both were approved media at the time.

Both types of media had the glitches in the exact same spot, when I put the files up on Protools....

I had this happen on an approved SD card. It was basically white noise at the end of the last file I recorded. Wasn't on the CF. I trashed the SD card thereafter. Haven't had a problem since.

    Interesting. Thanks for the info!

Hi Palmer,   the static noise on the file that you describe, is similar to what happened to my 633 when it was very new.  Occasional random white noise spikes simultaneously across all channels of the audio files, with no indication while monitoring the original recording.  In my case it showed up on both the SD and CF cards, which were both recording 48k 24bit.

SD said it was an intermittent problem in the main digital bus and quickly replaced my entire mixer with a new one. (it was under warranty at the time)

Terrifying problem- I'm glad I've never seen it again on my newer 633.

    Cheers,

    Brent Calkin

Interesting. How often did it happen if you remember?

  10. Hi everyone!

So I own a 633 that has been solid for many years, no issues, and I just was randomly scrubbing some interview files and noticed there was about a 30-60 second section that has an intermittent digital blip at a very precise rate, audio dropouts, and then extremely loud static noise (at 0dB). Here are the notes:

    1. This was across all tracks equally
    2. Only happened on the WAV files on the CF
    3. Didn't happen on the MP3 files on the SD card
    4. Didn't happen the rest of the 2 day shoot or the rest of the files before or after the incident
    5. Wasn't audible or visible while recording
    6. both CF and SD are on approved media list
    7. On version 4.50, might upgrade to 4.60 now though.

Happy to provide more info that I missed. I've read about noise being on all output tracks, but mine is the opposite, only on the cards, never heard it while recording. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful! Marked the card for now and won't use it.

Still noticing issues: Some recent topics in the Want To Buy - Want To Sell forum say they have zero replies, even though they do have replies. I’m not seeing my past few posts on my profile. Still can’t message @Tom Maloney (I really want to buy your Canare cable, by the way!) and I get an EX0 error code when attempting.

Several problems seemed to start up after I updated the outdated Tapatalk plugin. I would like to know if anyone having these problems is using Tapatalk to access the site. In the past, Tapatalk plugin has caused problems even for those not using it. I may have to disable Tapatalk for a period of time to see if it is the issue.

Yeah, error code EX0 here too when trying to message and others are reporting the same thing too.

Since I've been working a lot in reflective environments lately (prisons), allow me to add a layer to the Zaxcom wireless plusses: an algorithm designed to deal specifically with RF reflections. While on the subject, there's also an algorithm that narrows each TRX's RF footprint allowing more TRX's per inch of bandwidth. I originally bought into the system for its future proof nature and continue to invest for the same reason.

Funny you should mention this. I’ve have both Lectros and Zaxcom’s, and one area where I have had issues with the Zaxcom’s was in highly reflective environments. While the ZHD did help a bit, my lectros dis seem to perform better with reflections and phase cancellations. 🤷‍♂️

So today I encountered something I’ve never seen on my SRb. I was using them in dual mode and everything was working fine. Talent left set with their TXs still on, out of range, and then came back to set. Channel 2 had mysteriously stopped passing audio. I thought it was the Tx, but I tuned channel 1 to channel 2’s freq and it was picking it up fine. The odd thing is when I go to the channel 2 freq page on the SRb, the number is flashing, channel 1 doesn’t do this and my other SRbs don’t do this regardless if they are picking up a Tx signal or not. It’s not a pilot tone thing or compatibility thing. What does this flashing frequency mean? To add to

the oddness, I powered it on and off many times which didn’t help. Once I got home and powered it up again, it is fine, flashing stopped. Any ideas?
