  1. my two cents in complicating this interesting question and by no means is this a definitive answer: part of the problem with earplugs not blocking out enough sound is due to the fact that bones in the skull transmit sound to to the main auditory pathway. some hearing aids (and bonephone type headphones) work on this principle, using what is called, generally, conductive hearing. as indicated in responses to this thread, above, in discussion and according to the info in the link below, the resonances and anti-resonances that occur are complex. the article does not provide a definitive answer to the question at the top of this thread. it merely indicates (without breaking this down into extreme granulation) a lot is going on and resonance occurs all over the place. http://www.tinnitusjournal.com/detalhe_artigo.asp?id=169 my conjecture about bass frequencies is: if you're feeling bass frequencies in your chest there's a lot them absorbed by brain bones and contributing to the neural processing, and not in a good way. there are no pain receptors in the brain itself. when you have a headache the pain is generated by other receptors, but localized/realized as being in the head. the principle is similar to the pain in the shoulder or arm when someone is having a heart attack: there are no pain receptors in the heart muscle, so receptors nearby do the job of indicating trouble. if you're feeling sound pressure, or anything else for that matter, on your head it's on the skull bones and they absorb sound and simultaneously attenuate sound. if you're feeling bass frequencies in your chest similar vibrations are most likely affecting the guts of your head, but you can't feel it in your head because of the lack of sensation receptors there. the most direct source of the sound absorption, appears to be the parietal bones above the ears that go up to the temples, generally. i get a good result at concerts by wearing 3M Peltor X5 hearing protectors with or without earplugs depending on the volume level. https://www.google.com/search?q=3m+peltor+x-series+over-the-head+earmuffs&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=3M+Peltor+X5 some people laugh or snicker or stare when i put them on but when the house lights go up at the end of the show i'm pleased with the result. they do shield a very small portion of the parietal area and other skull bones below and around the ear and by design it seems to work that way in addition to protecting the ear canal. in getting back to conduction, resonance and internal attenuation i would guess that everyone's head bones are different in thickness and a larger head wound mean a person would have more bone mass and generally more biological fluids and that both bones and fluids cause and/or contribute to more or less resonances or attenuation depending on the circumstances, so results will vary. science has a generally good overview of the situation does not have a definitive answer to the problem of resonances as it is not all worked out yet.

  4. i don't ever want to retire from anything. work will keep you young. retirement makes you old--quickly. it is important to keep your ego centered on accomplishing things, maybe not the same type of work things, but things nonetheless. i think it's true: if you don't use it, you lose it. keeping those itty bitty brain cells in shape is key. notable music performers, like paul simon and others keep gigging not because they need the money. they love doing it regardless of the hassles involved because there's the fleeting moments of fulfillment. i saw dion play in brooklyn recently and at 76+ he was killing it. whatever is making him tick--i want it, lots of it.
  5. what is the nature of this shoot and type of location? is this a pseudo panel discussion with a moderator in conference room or classroom or small auditorium? if so, and there is a sound system with mics in place you could just take a line level feed and be done with it.

  7. just received and verdict listening to mp3s on the laptop: starkly different from my usual ultrasone pro 650, of course. the tascams remind me of the sounds of the 70's coming out of marantz fm stereos; adds a thick, sticky and soupy low end gloss to everything, if memory serves thats the way people listened to stuff back then--too much bass. stoner black sabbath fans--this is a must have!! the bass lines on beatles' helter skelter were prominent, for once, so much so that it sounds like a different mix, as it should, with mids and highs lacking a significant amount of bite, drums way out front. like, rockin man!! but still thick and soupy. i could definitely see people laying down music tracks with these and a second pair of whatever for comparisons or serious mixing down the road, so-so in the comfort department. ear cups on the small side, so i have to squeeze the tops in a bit. people are modding these so when the time comes to replace the cups i'll look around. the build quality seems pretty good. i haven't recorded dialogue with them yet, but i know what i'm in for. definitely worth the money, and much lighter than the ultrasone set.
  8. Sennheiser MD 416u is the precursor to the 441. Thus, mmmmaybe the second best dynamic mic of all time. Great mic always available for cheap on ebay. Originally designed for rock vocals, built for yelling. Designed looks-wise to appeal to MetalHeads. If I was going to situation-ally swap in a dynamic mic I would play around with a Cloudlifter, Fethead or Marti Audio plug on preamp or something on that order that operates on 48v. http://www.coutant.org/md416u/

  10. angling the mic towards the floor can help if you can find a sweet spot that captures talent's voice solidly, sometimes even straight down towards the floor if you're in close enough to capture. that way you're attenuating the reflections from the walls and ceiling. in most situations the most bothersome reflections are not coming from the floor.
  11. In dramatic and/or comedy stuff the above referenced quote is key, particularly when they are yelling or screaming. The problems I indicate to Directors are: A) the reverb or reflections are making the dialogue difficult to understand. and/or the lines are garbled because there is so much wind coming through the actor's mouth, that their teeth, tongue and everything else in that area is overpowered and lagging behind, thus screwing up pronunciation. The solution: C) all I need to hear is the intended context and emotional texture of the lines clearly, without all the excessive volume.

  15. i'm a wondering if anyone makes some type of 2x 9v battery sled to hirose or something on that order? there are usb type battery thingys all over ebay i guess some of them actually work and hold a charge. slap something together and hang it on yer belt with a zfr 100 and you're good to go.

  17. i am waiting/wanting to see what arrives in the camera department; perhaps a new eng/efp camera with excellent transformers and good stuff. something great with no weak points, has time code in and gives dslr a run for its money.
  18. there are a bunch of ceiling mounted pzm type microphones that are used for videoconferencing available that mount flush to ceiling panels and require a power source.

My stupid comment is: if Tascam did a redesign and added in phantom power and enough plug length to get into the xlr connectors (regardless of location, side or bottom) of the top boom pole brands I'd buy it in a second. I keep checking out the DR 10 but even at the price point I am not thrilled about cabling it or plugging it directly into a Denecke PS 1--yet.
  20. Conversely, they will also learn what a low-baller can save them in the budget. In every business sense sound recording for video is a competitive market. In some instances the low-baller can provide exactly what is needed and nothing more; the types of shoots that occur now are different because the delivery medium (smartphones, tablets, laptops) is different than in the past and the tools to put cost effective media on those platforms (DSLR) is causing consternation, grumbles, rage and despair because of lost work opportunities. Any discussion forum on rates should also include the ever changing technology landscape and it's correlation to rates--and adaptive strategies. Rather than carping about the people who work in that area; maybe carping about the manufacturers who made the current landscape what it is would be more to the point, but a lot of people don't see it that way, since it's computer companies, internet giants, internet service providers, smartphone manufacturers and manufacturers of equipment we use, or equipment we don't use and don't like the existence of because it hurts the bottom line. The issues surrounding this changeover in technology flare up on this site fairly often enough in the form of complaints that discussion, in my opinion, would not be harmful to clear thinking business men and women.
  21. when i worked staff in an a/v and video educational situation we used the Fostex 6301B things as power amps on outsource jobs. a couple of those and 2 or four passive 8 or 12 inch speakers on stands was more than enough for 400 people to hear presentations and panel discussions. one client threw a fit when we were unpacking and setting up because we didn't bring a crown power amp to a hotel ballroom situation, but he shut up quick and apologized when he heard it. i was initially skeptical when i was informed that was the in house way of doing it. the power rating appears to be much much higher than the advertised numbers. sounds good too. if fostex is still making them the same way try one, or buy one used on ebay and give it a tryout. if you need Ethernet and anything else figure out how to hook it all up.
  22. all the above is great advice; when you upgrade your mic and maybe the recorder (zaxcom zfr 100 or sound devices 702t) you should learn how to be a boom op/recordist then look for some worky worky and make some money money.
