  2. Being quite an experienced MAC AND PC user, I can definitely say neither is totally uber-friendly. Both have enough problems to deal with. The only advantage that the MAC has is that not too many virii have been written for it, and for that matter I have been running my PB for three years now without antivirus programs. The ergonomics on both user interfaces leaves much to be desired. best -vin
  3. Worked with sound mixer Pawel Wdowczak on Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited" shot in India and completed February '07. Currently mixing an Italian feature being shot in India. Last week running. Have a number of possible projects coming up or maybe or whatever... -vin Bombay, India +919867290002
  4. Maybe a VERY GOOD boom op will be able to cut through everything (including not having to listen to his own mic feed on headphones) and an AVERAGE boom op may actually get 'confused' by listening to the feed in his ears. -vin
  5. consumer video cameras use the small DVDRAM format, though in the round cartridge style, so i guess it wont go away soon. best -vin
  6. <<< As I tested telephone lines, I found one I'd forgotten. Some years previously, shortly before he died, my techno friend Harvey Warnke obtained a voicemail from me. Harvey was a unique spirit. Self-educated, he'd learned electronics working in the planetarium, then learned to design light shows. He worked on movies, too. If you've seen the remake of Invasion of the Body-Snatchers, in one of the later scenes there is the miouw of a cat; that was Harvey's cat, whom he named Shi*ty Kitty. If you saw the movie War Games, in the final war-room scene you saw the huge screens that show missiles launching all over the world; It was Harvey who made those huge screens with their flashing images. Long ago, he and I traded a project. He designed relays and sensors for the Line Seizer device I built for Network Answering Service, and I in turn programmed his Counter Intelligence device, which counted frames of film on a film-editing table for splicing movies. It was a grand time. Harvey was a brilliant engineer, who drove a turbo-charged motorcycle at vast speeds. He was always laughing, always fun. His death came suddenly. He'd contracted some kind of virus, and the virus, invading his heart, made his heart very large and very weak. And then one day, his heart stopped. >>> <<< At the time, I couldn't bring myself to delete the voice mailbox with the recording of his voice. I forgot it was there, until now. Sitting there at my desk in San Anselmo, calling into the machine, suddenly I hear my friend talking. His voice has survived the years and the equipment changes. He promises to return calls, but he will not. His voice remains, in the machine. And you know what? I still can't erase it. >>> http://www.bloggard.com/blog//item/209 Is that all one is supposed to know about this man? He must have been remarkable, like we all are, kind of... Legacy. History. Story. Inspiration. -vin
  7. Phil, who is Harvey? I still think it is very very relevant for someone (maybe me, maybe someone better) to "chronicle" the eras of audio, a book about this is very very important. at least a book. if not anything else... I had written about the possibility of a book on this forum a while back, and everytime i read posts like yours, i think what i say becomes truly important. it's legacy and history and stories and much more probably.... -vin

  10. I remember one day of shoot 4 years ago when the CS208 on my cart didn't power up in the afternoon. It was running off battery. I had to quickly reconnect my mics directly to the PD4 and continue. I found out later that all the power transistors on every channel had blown. This is the one and only time the CS208 went down in my experience. -vin
  11. Hi Malcolm, Greetings from the North West Frontier in India. I notice that the trays are totally different, have you changed the design? Also, how much does this nice baby cost - basic setup, before specific mods or additions? best -vin
  12. thanks chris, but it's still an application out of the OSX that I have to run. My gripe with OSystems still stands! best -vin
  13. In the PAL world, where there are no pull-ups and downs, simple divisible frame rates, how much relevance does a TC slate hold, in a situation where production sound is being recorded BWF with metadata and TC, the lab does not really use TC and matches sound for dailies (this is done in a pic edit room). Could one simply use a dumb wood slate after all in this situation? best -vin
  14. There is definitely one thing I find very frustrating on the Mac - the dependence on the mouse. I started using computers before the mouse became an important part of the system, during the PC XT era. Even nowadays with Windows machines, I prefer using the keyboard most of the time just because I am so used to it, and use the mouse very little. In fact the mouse in this case becomes an alternative means of input. In the Mac, i found some very standard practises I am used to just don't work or do something completely different. For example, usually I use the TAB key frequently to switch cyclically between various fields and hot points on a web page or a form. Similarly in Safari, switching between tabs in one window needs one to use the Shift-Apple- Left/Right arrow keys in combination. Now, this simply does not work if the cursor is in a text entry field. I have to use the mouse, either to click out of the entry field or might as well to select the other tab. There are many other such instances. Also I would really love more flexibility in the Finder windows, which I find quite frustrating. Another one is the Preview - I would like it to enlarge the window in which a PDF (for example) is opened and include the whole page instead of opening it in a smaller window forcing me to drag the corner and then hit a key. I think these are simple things which the software interface should definitely include. I think any OS interface has to also account for power users of the keyboard and make mouse pointing an option. I have been using the Mac extensively for a couple of years and I know more keyboard shortcuts than many users who have been with MACs longer than me, and this also applies for most PC users I encounter. I must point out here that this post is not bashing any system or interface, I am too far beyond taking sides on this kind of thing. There are enough problems with the WIN XP interface as well. Computer software user interfaces simply don't have enough cognitive sense built in and always tend to reside on the borderlines of user experience. best -vin
  15. Hi Brian, sorry, I never saw your post until now... missed it somehow... It was Giancarlo Dellapina from London. I really loved this cart, very sturdy, easy to move. best -vin

  19. Hi Phil Yes, I was aware of the difference between CMX and OMF, in fact one can just export/import only audio with OMF. However, the main thing here is how post wants ISO tracks on different machines if the track count increases and is ok with this, but wants the Mix tracks on the same machine. that is what i found wierd. best -vin
  20. from post: <<<<It is best from our point of view that he record a layout on a Fostex hard disk 8 track recorder (exact model # unknown) having both the isolated tracks and the dailies mixed tracks all on the SAME UNIT. That is, to record a maximum of 8 tracks, and if he needs to go over that, to record the extra two tracks on his Nagra recorder.>>>> this is a scenario of a Fostex 824 as main recorder and a Nagra V as second recorder (for dailies). i think this is wierd and funny at the same time. also they had some stuff about CMX rather than OMF, and from what i read in their email, they were not fixed on either themselves. I thought CMX was passe. comments? -vin
  21. hey, i'm with you... maybe us people have no place on places like this. maybe you should count the money and stay on or leave. i'd go for the second option. money is transcient, ethics is not... best -vin Bombay, India +91 9867290002 skype soundtrane IM dontpro@hotmail.com
