  1. i think its its because for the two 1/8" connectors there is a stronger cable mounting on the female connecter than the male connector perhaps? or maybe its just easier to get a split coming out of the female connector than the male? i've actually seen it done the opposite way.
  2. i bought some of the energizer rechargeables and use those for my erx1's. those have a little bit taller of a hat on them.
  3. yeah i frequently use the "69 arms" technique to hang blankets. i've acquired a few extra c-stands that i usually have in my car for such situations. it definitely helps. another cool thing i've seen lately from a local gaffer is he took some speed rail (pipe) from home depot/lowes of two diameters, one larger than the other (so one fits inside the other), drilled some holes through it and used a pin to hold it either compressed or extended. i've been meaning to do something similar but keep forgetting about doing it.
  4. For my heavy bag I use portabrace, the lighter bag gets the petrol.
  5. Usually for 90% of my gigs it's: Sanken cs3e Sennheiser mkh50 Sanken cos11's(1-2 extra) Countryman b6's(1 extra) Peter engh mini gooseneck I've got other mics but those are my go-to's that I keep in my main pelican case. I have a mic pelican case that I keep all my other mics(majority of what everyone else listed) and that's usually in the vehicle.
  6. I've got an older basic Lowell light kit that some dslr amateur users rent pretty frequently, just enough to keep me from selling it. But I've found that most of the crews that come in to town have already arranged lights from someone else before they call to book me (cause lighting is more important than sound I guess?) or they bring their own. But usually it's kino's and LED's.
  7. or at walmart for $12. however, those are physically different than the remote audio ones. the remote audio ones have a wider opening to better fit a boom pole's circumference. the walmart/bass pro shop one is a little tight on ktek 152 boom. it works, but i bent mine out a little bit to make it not as tight. but i mainly use the remote audio one. the cheaper one is on a knuckle in my car incase i forget my usual stand. also, Glen Trew posted in a thread on the sound mixer FB group about the other differences between the two. the remote audio one is supposed to have better welds and a few other differences that i can't recall. maybe glen can chime in again.
  8. work smart not hard. i agree with the "if camera is on sticks, i'm using a stand" mantra.
  9. I'm on a mountain based show throughout the winter. I rock the north face etip gloves with a convertible mitten. So I can still get finger coverage when the tops down(for cable maneuvering or smart phone app triggering). But usually for mic rigging the gloves come off. I tried the inner wrist warmer but I usually do the top of the hand between the two gloves. I'm super skinny so cold is not my friend.
  10. I've been looking to scoop up a baby ball gag and windscreen for the 50. I've just got the Rycote softie and have used it outside(when conditions were ok) and have been happy with its sound. But would like the option to use the 50 outdoors a bit more.
  11. for a while i was um200c/sra hopper, but i moved to smqv or smv so that all of my tx's can be talent kits as well. but even the um200c's were great as hops.
  12. Bought two of these a couple of months ago, used one last week. Sounds great, was in a truck doing a driving tour sort of thing. Client was very happy.
  13. yeah i either turn off remote function for my hops or make sure i'm potted down.
  14. I use a sennheiser g2 system for return monitoring when I go that route. I know the sound difference between lectro dropouts and g2 dropouts usually. But I'm an SRa fan. I work with a lot of camera guys that use prosumer cameras that don't have powering options. The SRa battery sled with a Sony np-f550 style battery runs pretty much all day.
  15. looking for a referral for a mixer in wichita with 7 series or zaxcom recorder. i am not hiring, just passing the name along to the powers that be. if its similar to the job i'm doing, boom and 1 wireless talking head. dslr camera. job is on monday and client is looking for someone asap. thanks. job has been filled, thanks everyone!
  16. mkh70 is my fav long mic. but recently since purchasing a cs3-e i find myself going for it less and less....
  17. I'm a tea tree toothpick kinda guy. Usually I'll break one in half and keep it tucked away. Kills germs, fresh'ns breath and no sugar. And usually crew are really psyched on the toothpicks too.
  18. I remember a soccer ad a while back that was binaural, pretty cool. I experimented with some binaural recording last spring. A company that I do contract sound work for has a simple binaural recorder. It's pretty much headphones. Their audiologist wanted me to "play" with it for a day and do some tests. So I did what I would do when it came to doing anything fun, I went mountain biking. I took a 3d gopro rig with me and did some pov riding and then some off bike shots/sounds. Playing back in the recorder to the headphones sounded really awesome and I was looking forward to syncing the audio with the 3d gopro stuff. But then the dude went and formatted the damn drive before converting the audio files for me... I just need to go back and redo it again but keep forgetting to call him.
  19. inverse square law. the closer you get the mic to the iphone, the better quality of the clap sound. or just put a shotgun on camera and plural eyes it, thats what majority of my shoots have been the past 2 years. however, i'm a huge fan of timecode. when done right, it works.
  20. spend less, make more, get faster on my bike, continue to have fun with my wife and hell, just to keep having fun!
  21. hey everyone, i hope you all had a great 2012. i just recieved a 2012 economic census for sound recording studios and other sound recording industries form in-51207 in the mail for my company. this is the first i've ever had something like this and looking to some of you guys to see if you've encountered something similar? there's a list of breakdowns of income, a lot of studio based type of stuff, which i don't do any of. things like "Studio recording services for music clients", "Sound editing and design services for audio visual services" and "licensing of rights to use music". about the only thing on the list that i can relate my business to is "live audio recording services" which gets broken down into a. audio recording of meetings, conferences and seminars and b. audio recording of other events. which i might have done 3-5 jobs that would fall into those categories. so i'm a little concerned that my business may be labelled incorrectly with the IRS and that i should be filling out a different form. i've contacted my accountant to see if she has any ideas, which is probably the best choice. but just wanted to reach out to the sound community to see if you guys had any suggestions. thanks
  22. Sanken cs3e, some 411a's and sponsored a cycling team(so now I have to attend all these damn bike rides, for business of course...)
  23. i used smv's for a while with 211's in 200 mode and was happy with the results. i've since upgraded to sra's and 411a's but i know a lot of mixers that still use 211's, they're great receivers.
  24. i too aim for -10'sh and had a DP recently tell me i was hitting a little hot. i asked for a playback and sure enough, barely crossing -12, which is what i was getting on my end. fortunately we have a pretty friendly relationship so later i told him his image looked a little over exposed. he got the joke. but lately i've been working with a lot of camera guys(wouldn't call them DP's) that aren't used to working with sound guys. comments like, "i'm only seeing sound on one channel" and "your levels look low", stuff like that. just some things that really leave me scratching my head.
