  1. Was flipping the channels and came across this on Discovery. You got to be kidding , a older guy and 20 something girl running around the jungle butt naked trying to survive for 21 days, guess the producer got bit by a snake, on the foot, pictures were so gross of his foot. So you got a camera and sound crew , where do they eat and sleep? Sound is good, believe the pacs are in the bags they are carrying and lavs hidden in the straps. Who thinks up these shows , and how do they get on , you know this crap is all staged, has to be. Batteries need to be charged. Lots of creative editing
  2. Guess this is why dealers have an abundance of ear pads , selling for use with 7506s I used to wear these headphones years ago working for a telco. Used with a ultrasonic leak detector, by the end of the day with the constant noise of the detector and the head vice grip made for a hurting head day We used the detector for locating leaks in aerial cables, the only way I can describe the noise is like you listen to steady pink noise or static
  3. Years ago...while taking production courses a night Mind you this when I had to assemble edit Gunsmoke on 3/4 and slice and splice sound on 1/4" tape Anyway my instructor told me 3 things Your sound is only as good as your weakest link in the chain If you want to get better at something hang with people better than you Never stop learning Today it all still applies
  4. Funny story along same lines. Years back I did an indi feature. Using 442 & 702T. I put lavs on 1ch and boom on 2nd Producer / director is in NY. His editor ( student I think) is in Illinois. They edit using pc cameras , meaning he in NY looks at editors screen from camera aimed at editor's screen. Anyway I get call from NY " track 1 is garbage , distorted , you have to call editor, I cannot re shoot. " He really sounds pissed. Raising he voice at me. I call editor , very young voice I am talking to, he plays clip while on phone , sounds like crap, garbled beyond reconigtion I ask what the file number is, find it, play it back both tracks sound fine on my system. We try 2 more files ,same thing ch 1 on his end is garbage, he is mumbling and flustered. I have him swap his out cables, trouble followes track. I have him open new project In FCP lay Down B&T. Tone on ch 1 is garbled. I very kindly but firmly explain he has a problem with his system and that he should trouble shoot before he crys and runs to producer and I get reamed for no reason at all. I get no apologizes from either one of them Then I get calls from producer that they cannot find file 103A take 1 or 2 I tell him what do you expect when you do not have a shot list, make it up as you go, your DP is rushing because you as producer/ director/ lead actor are yelling pushing people and more concerned about your performance than anything else. Go by time of day, listen to take number slated on file, it is probably slated correctly but my meta data is mislabeled. Please quite bothering me
  5. I had to read this twice on CL, thought I needed a vision test. Top it off they did it twice. 6. Just caught an interview with the author on CBS. Very interesting talk about what has happened to you folks out west. Lot of talk about China, the DVD dive and the industry in general. Sounds very interesting yet upsetting about the industry
  7. I just watched our President on television say " we've got more to do, we've got to find jobs" It just did not sound right to me "we've got"I don't think I have ever said this. I believe I always say " we have to" So what is correct ? So mind you I am not critiquing the President , Just want to know about "got"
  8. I have all manuals loaded into my Ipad, in a early morning fog its hard trying to remember the steps to change from a 200 to a 400 mode Also before a shoot I load the manual for the camera being used that day. This has been very much appreciated by young DPs.
  9. This does not bother me as much as on set when someone speaks to me as " hey you, dude , man , bro" I stop right there And straighten it out, " I am not your bro, dude, man" I am either Tom or Mr. Maloney to you OK ?" Funny part is most most of the young ones go with Mr. Just to be funny or sarcastic but it sticks. It's not a respect thing to me it's common courtesy
  10. This caught my attention and made me laugh for the ad below this one says they are looking for a DP for Sony EX 3. So I guess this is a new way to try and get people to work for free, they call it training ? I am almost tempted to call and ask what gear they will train me with. Maybe we should all call and leave them about 1000 voice mails Learn to be a BOOM Operator We will teach you how to operate boom and sound... working with Performers and other Crew members. 14. Ok ! Someone in Chicago has you beat! I am sure it is a 5th grader. One thing that is funny is they want a profile shot ? Isn't this discrimination ? 15. Just read and watched a demo on this Google Glass. Maybe now people will stop texting when they shouldn't. like driving ! Of course now only will we have to hear about what they are doing every minute of the day ( like anyone really cares ) will we be subject to seeing what they are seeing all day? I guess I am an old %^#7 but I really don"t see a use for these glasses other than maybe a medical class and a surgeon's work can be watched by interns. Tom in Chicago

  17. I am curious why I see such of an amount of used 442s and Sonosax mixers up of sale. I am guessing people with 442s are upgrading, but why the amount of Sonosax. Are they that old of a mixer? The new ones are up there in price. I am just curious if they don't fit the needs of todays productions or what ? I sure hope that things are not that bad in the industry that people are going under. Tom
  18. Richard , you spent 19.5 minutes lounger on the phone than I would have. I very much dislike those kind of offers, onlyI get them in e-mails. The calls I like are " this is xxxxxxx from xxxyzz productions we need a mixer for such a date what is you day rate ? Ok we'll be sending a call sheet thankyou" see you then. Later Tom. BTW great to meet you at NAB
  19. Being a senior I grew up on westerns. Always liked Rawhide and Clint Eastwood. After watching some old eposides today I looked the series up on IMDb to see where it was filmed and was blown away at the number of actors that appeared in the 8 year series. Barbara Eden, Jack Lord, Rick Jason, Dick York, you name someone they were there. The one name I came across that I did not recognize ,was Hal Needham. Looked him up , and how interesting. Very interesting read. Just proves, never too old to learn.
  20. Watching the news reports this am , driving me crazy with their statements " possible, maybe, could be, just guessing, a unconfirmed report, too early to say, We don't know for sure, we do not have this 100 % confirmed. Please just report what you do know, don't speculate
  21. I have set off small firecrackers before a take , keeps them quite for a while if not a long take. I also carry a sling shot and shoot shelled peanuts into the trees to quite the noisy birds. Noting I do not try and hit the birds but hitting the leaves around them, either shuts them up or scares them off. Someone told me I should carry a bb pistol for the birds. Yeah right in Chicago ! Tom
  22. I would also like to express my thanks to all. Great party, great people. Enjoyed walking the exhibit halls , running into and having a chat with our host. JW Also folks , before you throw out your name tag from the party, KEEP the clip , Makes a great holder for the long cable on your 7506s. Tom
  23. I am sure all you have had to deal with this one time or another. I knew it was going to be a long day for a 10 page script with a total of 3 people as talent when the producer / director arrived with a revised script ( sigh ) Soon after a few takes I was exposed to ear piercing laughter outbursts from the cast. To make things even worse none of them could get past two sentences with out looking at the script. ( both the DP and myself sigh ) After a while, and a little frustration I calmly explained to them how painfully this was to my ears and each time it happens we are losing time etc. As it continued I just monitored levels visually and removing the headphones and let the take run, Hey ! No one called cut . I figure if I have to listen to this BS , so can they in post. Sure they will appreciate it. So I am just curious how you handle this when dealing with amature talent as I did. All is good, cash in hand at the end of the day Go Cubs ! Tom in Chicago
