  1. I am trying to «compress» my soundbag to be as light and small as possible. I will be ordering a custom bag and i am now testing the  «layout». Trying to make it really really compact.

Is there a minimum distannce between rf receiver / antenna distrubution / bowtie antenna and sennheiser g4 camera hop? In other words will the performance be a lot better if there is 20 cm vs 5 vs 2 cm from say bowtie to g4 ? Any reason not to have the two rx receivers and the distro almost touching eachother inside a «pouch» ? See picture of my initial plan.

(Antenna distro is filtered between 470 and 700 but my g4 hop is in the same range )

  2. Has anyone tried the remote audio rainman on a rycote cyclone small? In their spec it says it fits the  rycote cyclone medium.. just wondering how it fits with my cyclone small? Clumsy? less effective? or just som extra air in the back of the cyclone and works as it should ? Thanks!

    Hello,

I too use the A10 system.

While the vast majority of the time I’m working from my cart, I do have an over-the-shoulder setup for remote situations using a  Protogear custom bag.

On the cart, I have four dual RX which go into the Audio Wireless antenna distribution, which then accommodate two SNA-600 dipoles. The dipoles can be raised up to 15 feet, which I’ve found to work very well for the majority of situations. I’ve also got a couple of “shark fins” in case I need more distance. But in 99% of the time, the dipoles work perfectly.

For the remote setup, I have three RX fed into the same model Audio Wireless distribution, which again accommodate two SNA-600 antennas.

They are attached to the sides of the Protogear bag. This has worked well for me in the past, but I must state that I don’t wear the bag or try to boom at the same time. I’m usually sitting on an apple box on set, or in a camera car, with a boom operator, etc.

I find that the bag is perfectly suited for my situation, but everyone has different needs which need to be taken into account. My bag wouldn’t work well in a documentary situation, where you need to move quickly and boom as well (I have a different setup for docs).

And the SNA’s would not be my first choice in that situation. Antennas and distribution really help with digital radio mics, as the whips are only mediocre.

    That’s been my experience anyway.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,

    Moe

Thank you Moe.  It helps a lot.

    Best regards

  4. I am about to order a custom protogear bag for my bagjobs. I have just a sonosax r4+, 2 audio limited a10 rx and a cameraloop. Any usefull hints or things you wished you ordered as a customization for your order? I am adding threaded attachment points for antennas.

Are you happy with the quality of protgears bag? What harness is the best one for a small bag? Ktek or protogears own harness?

I see, I see. Any of the products made by PSC or Audio Wireless are professional quality and will work for you. These guys also make quality splitters: https://www.gothamsound.com/product/62-dual-channel-active-antenna-splitter

Thank you Neil. The AS-62 looks great. I think that one fits my bag perfect.

Does anyone have Any experiences going from wips to betso bowtie on the a10s?( or other small dipoles)  How much more range do you get? Or do i need to go to sharkfins to notice a improvement ? (with only two recievers)

  6. I have just bought a Audio Limited a10 system with 4 x tx and 2 rx. So far I am really  happy with the sound and build quality but I am having range problems. The range when used on a talent is too short.  I am using wips and I am working from a small bag. I would like to improve the range that  I currently have with wips without using too much space and weight in my bag.

So I am wondering what people suggest for antenna distro and antennas for two a10 recievers in a bag. I would like the option to expand to one more reciver so I am looking for 3+3 or more sma outputs.

I have looked into PSC and Audio wireless... are they any good? Any smaller / cheaper  alternatives that are any good?

I am thinking i should buy two antenna setups... one for when I am running around with my bag and need them to be attached to the bag... and one when I am in "cart mode" and can have antennas on stands.

Would betso bowtie be the best alternative for bag use? How much improvement vs wips would you guess i would get with just omni bowties on two a10 recivers? Is there a antenna distrubution that fits the bowtie ? ( small with no powersuply? )

As far as active antennas ... is wysicom active the best for this setup? or are there other brands that are "cheaper" that works "as good" ?

     Thanks :)

Just try and decide... i prefer the sound of the A10 a lot, right now i am working in Sahara on a documentary, ugly condirions, a lot of fine sand and dust and wind, the a10 performs without problems, range here at the middle of the desert is very good,  as a european user i realy like the record function, for run and gun situations its good to have a backup recording at the transmitters...

Are you happy with the  range  when you are not in the midle of the Sahara ? :)

    Hello Bems,

I’m a longtime Audio Ltd. user, so you should take my opinions with a grain of salt. However, I’ve just run a side by side test with the Wisycom system to see how they perform together, so I thought I’d pass along my impressions, biased though they may be.

To address your first question, I found the A-10’s to sound better than the Wisycom’s, but that may be because I’m so used to hearing the clarity of a digital signal. We performed tests on male and female voices, as well as the dreaded “key test”, first with a DPA 4060, and then with a Sanken COS-11. To my ears, the A-10’s were considerably better sounding across the board. The Wisycom’s to me compare very favorably to the Lectrosonics range. But again, only an opinion. Your tastes may vary.

Regarding range (distance of signal), the Wisycom’s performed very well. I use them as my IFB system, and I’m continually impressed with both their sound and range. But both the A-10’s and the  Wisys went about the same distance, only the Wisycom’s signal began to degrade and fritz at their limit, while the A-10’s simply stopped sending signal. I’d say in general the Wisycom’s consistently went about 20/25 feet further (which may be the extra distance you needed). So there’s that. I might also point out that all tests were done with my standard antenna setup, which is two SNA-600 dipoles. I do know that Wisycom makes some fantastic antennas that I’ve heard great things about.

All in all, since Audio Ltd’s most recent update, the range has more than satisfied me.

Regarding new transmitters, I don’t know about Wisy’s future plans, but I know that Audio Ltd is planning on a small TX, hopefully soon. It’s supposedly based on the size and style of the old 2040 Mini.

At any rate, I thought that the Wisycom system was very well built, easy to use and certainly acceptable in every way.

    Hope this helps,

    Moe

Thank you  Moe for your detailed response. This is very helpful and points me in the audio limited direction. Do you Have any info regarding the new transmitter you are mentioning ? I do like the idea of a «Tiny a10». Do you think we are talking weeks, months or years? :)

Thanks, Moe, for the detailed  and  personal report. I appreciate that you preface everything with the statements about subjectivity, familiarity ands personal feelings  ---  after all,  as you know I have said many times that our EARS are our most important test instrument. What you have stated here confers very much with what I heard from others  ---  Wysicom stuff, analog, is very good, possibly better in many respects to it's closest competitor, but the Audio, Ltd. (as  well as the Zaxcom Digital wireless) has so many advantages over any analog or so-called hybrid systems out there. My preference, which is  well known, is for the Zaxcom Digital wireless  ---  Zaxcom has had at least a 10 year advantage over the others, developing several modulations that provide for better signal integrity over most all of the others  (and of course the feature set, functions, remote control and recording capability have been very useful).

Thank you Jeff. I will have a second look at zaxcom.

  11. I am having a hard time deciding between buying 4 channels of  wisycom (mcr54) and and 4 channels of audio limited (2 A10-RX )

It boils down to how much better is the sound quility on audio limited vs wisycom. Has anyone used them side by side for a while? Has anyone done a AB test? Are the wisycom users all happy with the soundquality?  ( I am not in a position to test them both myself )

I also understand the range is better on wisycom. I understand the latest firmwares on audio ltd has helped but is anyone regretting buying the a10s because of limited range?

Are there rumours of wisycom coming out with a new transmitter? audio limited with a smaller transmitters?

Is betso bowtie a good solution for bag antenna for both systems? And if so what is the solution to split the antenna signal if I go the audio limited route ?
