  1. I'll buy a flat bastard just for the name. Thanks Jim.
  2. It's very much a personal decision with valid arguments on both sides. I stopped insuring my gear around 2000. Here in Montreal, I was paying around 4% of the value with a 1k$ deductible. It just didn't make sense. I have 2 kits, so the bulk of one usually stays at home. If I had a major loss, it would hurt like hell, but it wouldn't kill me financially.
  3. I'm done with UPS. Wait until you see the extra bill you'll have to pay on delivery. Back in December, they charged me $70 in brokerage fees on a $380 order from Markertek. USPS/Canada Post works for me.
  4. I remember a post here awhile back (from my not-so-reliable memory, it may have been from Larry Fisher). It boiled down to the cost of producing a rechargeable lithium 1.5V AA vs the gained capacity over current NiMH batteries. The math didn't add up. If you think about it, if there was a way to make money off rechageable 1.5V AA lithiums, they'd be out there already.
  5. They're now $400/pair and it's still a good deal.
  6. I'm obviously a great fan of DIY sewing (and DIY in general), but I can also recognize when it makes absolutely no sense to do so. Thanks David.
  7. To the left of the 0-180 axis are lines representing frequencies from 125 to 1kHz. To the right are lines representing frequencies from 2k to 12.5kHz. In reality both sides mirror to the other side, but to avoid the confusion of having all 8 lines piled up on top of each other, they only show you half. Best spot is still 0°.
  8. DIY. I'm using this on my 302 set up; Originally made for my 4.2; I used a sewing machine, but for something this small, a needle, thread, and some patience is all that's required. And it'll be the exact length you want/need.
  9. Because of everything I've learned here, the next round's on me.
  10. Another cable artist upping the ante here on JWsoundgroup. Very nice work. Any issues with TC bleed?
  11. I remember a discussion here quite a while back regarding certain lavs being more susceptible to RF when used with certain systems (sorry, my memory won't allow me to be more precise). With that in mind Giancarlo, which lavs did you use with your Audio ltd?
  12. Jim or Phil, could you expand on the "coil of cable" idea? How does that help? I did a shoot on a much, much smaller Canadian destroyer. I was fine below deck, but as soon as I got outside, in the line of sight of the spinning radar, I would pick up a clear, short "zip" every time it came around, every 2-3 seconds. At the time, I blamed my Sanken CS3e, but now I'm not sure it's the only culprit. I recently discovered that the shield in my internally coiled K-tek isn't braided, just a wrap around. AFAIK, a braided shield offers better EMI/RFI protection that non-braided. I hope someone will correct me if my assumptions are wrong. If I ever get to repeat my experience, it'll be starquad, Neutrik EMCs, and I'll follow the very logical advice to bring along a dynamic.
  13. I'm seeing 42 results using "dpa 4017" (using the quotes, 52 without). Make sure you use google in the search section.
  14. Some interior scenes were shot at Mirabel airport, 45 minutes from Montreal. "Most exterior shots and those featuring actual aircraft were shot at Montréal–Mirabel International Airport: additional interior shots were also done there including the mezzanine overlooking the immigration desks and the baggage carousels directly behind them..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Terminal
  15. Thanks to the I'll correct myself. I did a shoot in a tattoo shop years ago, and whenever the machine was activated, my Neumann would completely distort. Memory is what it is. Anybody seen my keys?
  16. I gave myself a pair as a Christmas present. I don't do any editing, I just wanted a better way to hear/criticize my tracks at the end of the day. I had a heck of a time trying to get rid of a noise issue at first, which was amplified every time I scrolled with the mouse. Now that that's fixed, I agree. Impressive definition/separation. Even with $112 shipping to Canada, it's still a great value. I now have better sound in my office than I do in my living room.
  17. Or we could just all pull our pants down and get to the heart of what this thread is all about.
  18. In the same vein: "A few tomatoes short of a thick sauce"
  19. What charger do you use with the Hitech and approximately how many cycles have you done? Thanks.
  20. Thanks to Facebook, I was reminded of a great month long documentary shoot I was on 10 years ago; http://www.guinntiques.com/thebottledrop.aspx In the picture with the 2 guys, I'm the one in the foreground. I came home with 5 of them. It really was a treasure hunt.
  21. Whenever my Loon pole gets wet, I take it apart and dry it. But I've never paid much attention to the wing until it crapped out on me last week. Turns out the MXLR was quite corroded. Now that I think about it, it does make sense; pointed up as it is, it's much more susceptible to the elements than other poles. Other than having to Dremel off one of the two protruding guides along the circumference to match the original XLR, it's an easy repair. An ounce of prevention...
  22. I made a new XLR to TA5 today according to this diagram; which I now realize is a different configuration than the OP's. I tested it in my UM400. The level I got from the mic was fine, but there was also a very high level of constant hiss. I removed the jumper (I put it in the XLR, I don't know if it makes a difference in a foot-long cable), and heard a big improvement. I could go from perfectly quiet to a bit hissy, depending on how I moved the Tx around. It's better, but still not a solution. For kicks, I pulled out my 195b. It's much better. The only way I get hiss, is if I stick the Tx right against the p/s. And that's as far as my knowledge of these things can take me.
