  1. I've got a one day passion project I could use that on. Think they would let us use it for free. It will look great on their reel.
  2. Guess I was late to the party. March of 2006. Scott....
  3. Anybody wonder how the power D-tap and any of the BNC's can be plugged in at the same time on the side of the battery block. If it was straight up on top, no problem. Scott....
  4. This is an apple to orange type of discussion. Have one camera in the room shooting a scene and then add another camera and another and another and each camera works without effecting the other camera. Now if you start out with one wireless working great and then start adding more, soon you will have problems of the wireless not working at all along with adding wireless phone and wifi devices. All of the radio waves are a finite amount while the light waves aren't competing with other light waves to be seen. But they can alter the color of the room. But then you don't turn every available light on either if you are good at lighting. I think the problem might be solved when audio devices start to be able to share the audio waves, but have an address on that wave length. Not sure this can be solve in the analog airwave, but might be able to be address on the all digital airwave, but then would have to address the delay induced in the A to D conversion. But then this won't make the price go down at first because of the cost of RND, but after a few years I could see the price begin to fall just like computers when they first came out. And producers will always try to get what they want for the lowest price without caring about how much the equipment cost. Scott.....
  5. I have put several of these kits together and I was able to beat the 200 hour limit several times. Staying awake that long was the hardest part. Scott.....
  6. I don't think anybody has really answered the question. The closest has been you are an independent contractor and charge the date rate for each day. The fed rules says you work 40 hours in a seven day period, the next hour is OT. This is all assuming you are an employee getting x/hour. I have worked like this and some weeks would be in OT on a Thursday and get paid that rate until the end of day on Saturday. My question was if we are charging a day rate and we get to that 5th day as pure OT and charge that rate til the end of day seven. Yes there are times when this changes from state to state or if you are under some other contract, but some times all we have is a verbal of xxx/10 with OT after 10. There are some businesses where you never get any OT unless you work over 40 hours in 7 days. I understand all the other stuff about one day jobs and your rate is xxx/11 or xxx/14. I'm wanting to know about a long term project where the only agreement might be xxx/10 with OT after that and you're are working 5 to 7 days per week. I think Senator has the best answer. I was typing this while he wrote his answer. Really wish the Fed's would come out with a ruling on this where we all could be on the same page. Scott......
  7. I was talking with my wife about a question I had about rates and hours and we couldn’t come to an agreement and I would like to know what other freelance crew think of this. As freelancers, some of us are incorporated and some of us aren’t and I don’t know if that applies, but most of us charge a date rate for a 10 hour day and most of the time most project are in the range of 1 to 3 days at most. Might also be different between union and non-union and W-2 or 1099. After 10 hours of work, time and a half is charged. Now the question was on a long term project of over 4 days, what happens to the days where we have worked over 40 hours in a seven day period on the same project? Fed laws says anytime over 40 hours has to be charged at 1.5 of the base rate during a seven day period (one week), but there is nothing about double or triple time, only agreeing to OT after 40. All double and triple time are contract agreements. If we were working where our pay was to go thru a payroll service, we would get OT. But since we are independent contractors, are we covered by the OT rate or are we just working for our day rates no matter how many days we work with the only OT being after 10 hours in the day? Just wondering what others views are on this and if anybody else has thought about this issue? Scott……
  8. They got some things right, but I'm sure folks here can find all of the mistakes in this ad. I'll start with the first one and then others can add the others. She isn't wearing her headphones at the beginning of the spot. Scott.....
  9. My mics go in and that is where they stay, one Rycote, one K-Tek. At lease my 416 and 60 do, My 50 and Scheops go back into their boxes since they don't have the protection of a blimp. Scott.....
  10. People have been trying to use less light since the first photo. What I like about lighting is how real lighting by a great gaffer can make a picture pop and that doesn't happen by throwing up a light just to make the room brighter. You still need to shape the light. Just like you can't just hang a mic in the room an expect great audio. Scott.
  11. Ain't this the sh@t. A bunch of under 40 carneys jumping from project to project living off somebody's else dime. They share a place to live or still crash at the parents during down times. Might have a low wage job to give them a little something to rub between their fingers, but live for the weekend shoot where everything is happening. They all know what camera and lens they want to shoot their project on, but have no clue what a flag, 1k or a bates plug is and timecode is just something to log the pictures. Where did this business go so wrong at and who really is to blame. Scott...
  12. My first office of the year. Small town USA. Scott.....
  13. Update: Survived the job. Three days of very cold work that came down to fast run and gun production. Worse day was the last day when I need a second set of equipment. I had it with me just because I want a back up incase something happened since we were over two hours from home. I was able to save the day with it but won't be rewarded. Most of the money lost was in OT charges, but that really wasn't what bug me the most. I was more upset about the lack of info I was given from Client B and the fact that they set a price for me without consulting me about what equipment they might need and what that cost might be. Client B was so far out of the water on this project and should have found somebody else to handled the job. As I was talking to another vender, on some of these jobs and with it being a slow time of the year, and there are times when you can really want the money, learning to say "NO" does have its rewards. Scott.....
  14. Crew needs the work because of the winter/holiday break. This client hardly see any extra audio rental than a basic package so they don't know about the extra charge of a wireless link or the extra charge of each wireless over the two in the basic package. They are also one of the bigger clients in the area and are use to having little things thrown into the package without their knowledge where you might use it because you want to do your best for them. Mostly in boom choice or a comtek thrown in. Scott......
  15. Wonder how other see this problem. Working with a know client that you work with a lot that calls with a job where they say they can only give you your usually date rate but it will be a flat rate because they don’t know the hours, but might be long on one of the days. Client is only being used as a means to get a crew and will be cutting the check for the project, but are not in charge. Client mostly shoots with basic Epic/Scarlet set-up. Audio is mostly boom and two wires hardwired to camera along with audio to my recorder. Get called into pre-pro and find out that shoot has now blossomed into 2 Epics, one Red one, one black magic and 4 Go-pros. Would like two track wireless to camera, but I only can do one camera that way, but can do a single track to two cameras and have settled on that. They also want two speakers wired along with a wireless hand-held reporters mic. Then add a marching band along with a small concert where I would take a feed from a board. Told rate will not raise for extra equipment even though I will not have to rent anything. I have all equipment to cover so far. Client owns no audio equipment. My real problem is how to handle client after the event and talk to them how they are booking work without any input on equipment needed to do the job along with setting rates for labor without any input from the “independent contractor” and not allowing any contact with the client hiring the client you are working for. Really seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Has anybody else had to deal with this type of problem? How do you correct it? This is where client A is telling client B how much money they are willing to spend but wants a lot for that money while client B is hiring subs without telling subs how much audio client A is looking for and client B isn’t telling client A that they are working with subs that charge more than A’s budget but is willing to do the job and forces the subs of B to take the money of A or the subs can walk but then B has to find new sub to replace walking sub at same rate. This is also a smaller market where there isn’t a lot to choose from in the first place. Scott…….
  16. When I first read this, a brace and bit came to mind. I'm guessing you used a portable drill powered by AC or battery. Scott....
  17. I just got my 664 kit put together and have yet to turn a dime with the thing and now this comes out. It was like finding a hidden Easter egg full of money in August. Now I have to buy a bunch of cables to link it to anything else, but think of the possibilities. Scott....
  18. (Already owning both devices, I was thinking it would be great to use inputs 1-5 in the 552 to send to channels/tracks 7-11 in the 664 instead of going out and buying the Cl-6. Go line level prefade out on each channel and use the link port to send postfader sources to the mix tracks on the 664.) Since they are both SD products, I'm sure they thought this would work. No different than mating a 442/552 with a 744. And the link was already made to give a mix track to the aux channels. This would just make for a very heavy bag set-up. The pre-amps are not the same, but should make no difference. Scott....
  19. I would like to write something really snarky, but I can't. All I can say is read the manual, it's even on line.
  20. Why will production pay for camera to travel, but sound is left at home?
  21. People always like to ask why all the wind protection? As a OMB, it's just easier to have it always ready to go whether you are inside or not. Sometimes you are running inside to out or out to in and you just don't have the time to change things around or pack everything along for the ride when its going to be a 12 hour day on your feet. It just makes things go faster and you don't have people burning holes into your head while you are changing to your better sounding system. Scott......
  22. Why in my day, nobody needed a list to be a Curmudgeon, you just knew. Now leave me alone while I go look at my stereoscope. Scott.....
