  1. Zack, thanks so much for the tip. I'm going to mess with the antenna configuration today. I'm also going to look into the filtered cable. Though call time is in a couple hours, so it'll probably have to wait till tomorrow. I checked into adjusting the power setting on the IFB100, but I'm not sure if I'll have time to do a thorough test before we start shooting today. The power is adjusted in arbitrary increments (from 0-7) so its hard to judge what's going to be too low. Without the luxury of a proper camera return, I'm hesitant to just start cutting the power. Either way, I'll report back with the results of any adjustments I make. Cheers.

    Since you have an external amp, try using a setting of 5 for power. Typically you have an external antenna setup with an amp, are you using both in a bag setup? From changing the power settings 7 to 5 off a standalone IFB100 I seem to loose a rough average of about 20 feet of range, but YMMV :)

    Another thing to try is power the IFB on a separate battery/power source than the comtek, that's helped me on random occasions where I can't solve it through the normal troubleshooting methods.

  2. Don't forget to budget in for a bag to carry all the extra stuff that won't fit in the mixer bag, very comfortable shoulder harness, batteries to power everything, chargers, and lots of cables and adapters, power distribution for the bag, etc :)

    A good place is get to know your local camera folks, see what kinds of cameras you will need to hook into and get double sets of connection cables, 1 to use and 1 for a backup for each type you discover. Wireless hop gets you free from when the camera op decides they need to run to the other side of the room to get a shot, but adds it's own complications compared to a simple tethering setup.

    I've found the smaller compact slates are easier to transport and still just as readable, but I'd suggest renting a couple brands to find the one you like best before investing the $1400ish on a slate.

    You may need an IFB system at some point, lots of info on here on the different systems.

  3. Had to crank up the preamp quite a bit, so I decided to go cable instead of wireless boom, but the wireless boom was a lot quieter to my surprise.

    For a troubleshooting starting point, to me your wireless boom is now your baseline, it's quiet to you.

    I used a Schoeps CMIT going to a Sound Devices MM-1. Cable out of MM-1 line in to the Nomad, the preamp noise was notable (which means too high for my taste).

    So the changes from the baseline show that noise was introduced at some point from the Schoeps, MM-1, or new cable(s) that you introduced to cause the noise?

    Using a Lectro LMa/SRa out of the MM-1 with the Smart NR in the SRa set to normal, the noise was already audibly lower, with Smart NR set to full it was much lower and that's what I opted for eventually.

    So following the path, the noise had to pass through the SRa to be influenced by it, that rules out the nomad as it was "quiet" for the baseline?

    Surprised me a bit, since I know my Nomad's preamps are not noisier than others (they have been tested by my dealer's tech and he said they are among the quietest preamps for location recorders.)

    For the record, going in directly with the Schoeps into the Nomad, the noise was even higher than with the MM-1 as a preamp.

    This would lead my troubleshooting to something new between the nomad and the Schoeps to introduce noise since it wasn't there with the original wireless connection. Or RF interference entering the new cables ect.

    Unless I've totally missed your setup, it doesn't appear to be a "Nomad preamp" issue as the noise would be something closer (or at) the Schoeps that sounded like "preamp" noise.

  4. Now, I have to figure out why the audio I get on the ERX is so low on the two sets of phones I got under hand (one being my every working day phones). Even cranked up, it's very low.

    On the IFB100 there is a set of white trim pots, send a 20db tone and make sure you see the meter line go up to the vertical line on the display area.

    The IFB mixes L+R (default) into the mono signal, make sure your not phase canceling as well.

  5. I had to do this once before. I used a B6 and just popped the mic out of a button hole and stuck it behind the button. The mic was out in the open, invisible to the camera, and free from clothing noise.

    There were no button holes in the shirt, it was some form of cover with access by the arms, went waist to neck.

    Thank you all for the advise, at least I know there isn't a magic solution.

    Today i had a starched business shirt on the male talent, and polyester jacket with a silk pencil dress on the female talent...

    I said a prayer to the boom gods and it worked out :)

  6. I ran into a problem attempting to wire up a Catholic priest the other day for a sit down interview. He was wearing an all polyester (I think), shiny, almost silk like, extremely noisy outfit. He talked with his hands so lots of movement. When he would move his hands, you could hear the fabric sliding across itself from a few feet away.

    I did get it all with the boom, but the rest of the interviews were all planned to use the LAV track in post. Sanken COS11D was my available microphone, I could have used a B6 but ran out of time to solve the issue.

    I tried under the lapel, under the jacket, hushlav mount, vampire mount, the rubber mount, ect. I had to give up after 4 attempts to keep the interview moving and on-schedule.

    Any advise would be welcome for wardrobe like this.

  7. Are the digital and analog output busses connected?

    I've been pulling together parts to make a digital pathway from end to end, at least a AtoD at the Microphone, then a DtoA on the camera end (if needed), but everything in the middle will be digital.

    Don't have the 042's yet, and still working on the AES cable, so I can't test it myself - thought I'd see if someone else has done it yet.

Also of course FAT 32 is the recorder's choice of recording making it cross platform to Apple and PC, but I've heard rumours that it doesn't behave as well for the post people whom are using Protools on Apple Machines. I'd love to hear what the whole flow is. It's one thing to record on set but if it's messy for post then I'm kind of wondering about it's viability.

    It records to MARF, then mirrors to a fat32 card. Same technology that's been used for years from the diva, to fusion, and now nomad. The files are a broadcast wave file, which work just fine in pro tools. Nomad in the future will be able to write off mp3 files as well with an 8 or 12 track unit.
