  1. According to the Dolphinear/Pro Hydrophone specs, it has an XLR plug for a balanced XLR input and It does not require Phantom Power. The specs also state it has blocking capacitors in the plug, so either way the F8 should work with or without Phantom Pwr enabled.. The lack of low frequencies could be the F8's high pass filter is engaged and set too high, disable it or set it to100 Hz or below.. depending on the environment
  2. Audio editing software (like Sound Forge) and many DAWs can extract (aka, rip) the PCM audio files from an audio CD. The problem is.. no one seems to have the CD.
  3. My Dell XPS 9550 seems very quiet, though my old and abused ears may be not hearing something. It has a 1TB solid state HD, 32 GB RAM, 4K display and a Nvidia GeForce 900 series GPU.
  4. You can use a simple L-pad (two resistors) for unbalanced signals. Determine how much attenuation you want and calculate the R1 and R2 values. If you are a dummy like me and cannot do the math, this webpage has an on-line calculator. Enter the impedance and the amount of attenuation you desire.
  5. Many developers have dropped OMF support (too bad IMO) and only support AAF.. which is not very reliable in my experience . I use AATranslate to convert files to a native format, An OMF file could not exceed 2GB, but that was with Windows. So I would instruct the video editors to break down the track count to multiple files or by time sections. It has been a while since I have encountered an OMF. Too bad, since I rarely had problems importing and exporting even to/from Mac to PC or visa-versa
  6. I have Shure A55M and Windtech SP-30 shock mounts for my SM57s which I use for podiums or conference tables. The lower cost Windtechs are extremely rugged but have less isolation than the Shures. 57s in general do not need much anyway due to the internal cushioning. That said, I would not use an M88, 57 or other low output dynamic mic on a movie dialog type work.
  7. I always give clients a stereo music track , Stereo Fx track and a mono dialog track in addition to the full stereo and 5.1 mixes for b'cast (or whatever) at the proper loudness.
  8. Many DAWs and NLEs show the peak decibel scale dBFS (anything over 0.0dB is clipped). I think Audition uses dBFS. I .. at least by default. I do not know what scale PP uses. Most DAWs have settings to change the meter scale ( RMS, LU or other).. The waveform display usually shows peak.
  9. The mics in the picture look like the Sennheiser MD-441. I had one of those from my music recording days (daze). It had very low sensitivity and required lots of gain for a low SPL sources. I tried it on a narration session once and did not like it for that at all. It did have multi-level LP and HP filter switches though and was impressive looking.
  10. If you have hot water or steam heat, a radiator is a real good ground point to discharge yo'self, water pipes are good as well. Atmospheric lightning is static electricity.. to the n'th degree.
  11. Is it a static electricity shock? Which is typically an audible snap and an tiny arc can be usually be seen in dim light between your finger tip (or whatever body part is closest) and the device chassis.
  12. As our old friend Senator frequently stated, "it ain't the arrows, it's the archer".
  13. I do not know about the Sony Rx but if it is like the Sennheiser 100 series portable Rx, the AF out set to max outputs -10dB (nominal) at best... anemic for Sound Devices +4dB. Use the 633's main mic input channels or with an external mic pre.
  14. I have padded 3.5mm input plugs with two resistors. If the input jack is not in a small recess, 3.5mm plugs with large barrels are available, which makes it relatively easy to fit the resistors in.
  15. Are you sure it is the mics? Try star-quad cables, which are especially good for blocking RF. I like Canare's L-4E6S...relatively easy to prepare, solder and a pleasure to work with in hot / cold environments. Canare also has a L-4E5C Mini-Star-Quad if weight /size is an issue.
  16. 99.9% of shotgun mic are SD condensers and can be low cost. Typically, a shotgun mic uses an 'interference tube' for the polar pattern and are mostly used for exteriors by PSMs.
  17. If you can find a pre-owned Audio Technica 4073 short shotgun (discontinued), It has a warm sounding low-end bass response and sizzling highs. However it may be too sensitive for a high SPL environment, I think the max SPL is less than 130dB.
  18. If recording a live music performance, I get a FOH console mix feed and a stereo room mics and mix the two stereo pairs together in post. The console mix provides the presence and the room mics give it the 'live room' sound, closer to what human ears hear. The 'house' mix is dependent on the FOH mixer and it may be vocal heavy, so having a separate mix or stems from aux sends or a matrix is a good idea. Many of the digital consoles can record a multi-track ISOs to a USB stick which is even better, but requires more post time and music recording/mixing skills.
  19. I have fed (mic level) audio to a walkie/talkie with a custom adapter cable I made. It was not recording quality but plenty good for monitoring. RF range was that of the walkie/talkie system. a mile or so. I suppose it could be done in reverse. Tx in the follow car and Rx in the picture car.
  20. I have seen an in-line high or low pass filter for unbalanced lavs, (which most are). If the noise is getting in through the mic/wire connection,I would try another mic (and/or channel.. It would likely be the same feeding a Lectro (or whatever) if it's getting in through the cable . I have never encountered security system interference noise working on many ENG with the G series Sennheiser or others on thousands of ENG and docu shoots (prior to sound for movies),.
  21. I do not think a few thousand Hz will make any difference. I just try to avoid having an antenna touch bare skin which can attenuate an RF signal significantly.
  22. I use the Neutrik Rean mini XLR (aka, TA) with the Canare mini cable which fits nicely through the Rean boot. The Rean are easier to solder and assemble than the Switchcraft TA series, which has about twice the number of parts.
  23. The Canare L-4E5C Mini-Star-Quad microphone cable is high quality, but the OD is larger than the Belden. Canare's L-2E5 2 conductor mini microphone cable is high quality as well and about 2mm smaller than the L-4E5C star-quad. Star-quad is not necessary for line level links IMO.
  24. For a specific voltage measurement, I use a multi-meter set to DC voltage and put a 100 ohm resitor to simulate load. On 9 volt batteries, a 330 ohm resistor is recommended for load. In lieu of a meter and for convenience, I put batteries in a Tx or Rx that has a gauge.
